Absolutely great instructions on how to start and maintain your sourdough starter, with photos! I am late to the “make your own rustic sourdough loaves during Covid” craze, but I am amazed at the quality breads I have made by following instructions for the basic beginner loaf once my starter was strong (about 10 days of nurturing). The back half of the book includes recipes for your sourdough discard, otherwise known as the starter you throw away every day when you feed your starter. I’ve made the honey butter biscuits as well. My family is swooning over this bread and I feel like a rock star!!
I have only been at it for three weeks now, maybe I will report back again at a later date. I did also buy a stone wear cloche to bake the bread in and a banneton basket so it would look pretty after rising, all discussed within this book. You can’t go wrong here if you want to learn how to create and maintain a sourdough starter and bake an amazing loaf of sourdough bread! Highly recommended!

Proper sourdough is a LOT of work, and my chocolate cherry babka did not turn out after over two days of labor, but that was absolutely user error because I am a terrible cook. I'm nearly positive that I got impatient when the dough was taking longer than I wanted to rise, so it's my own fault that it turned out heavy and tough.

I DID muster the patience to let the dough for the honey rolls rise as long as it was supposed to--the instructions telling the visual and textural cues of a fully risen dough were super helpful in this--and they came out perfectly! I was so thrilled that I sent photos to my group chat so everyone could coo over them, and my partner and I ate half the pan immediately. Neither of us got a lot of honey flavor from the dough, which is a bummer because honey is an expensive ingredient, but there was plenty of honey butter on the top to make up for it.

I messed up the orange chocolate chip cookies a bit, too, because I was too lazy to separate eggs and just tossed the whole eggs in (are you sensing a theme here?), but other than the finished cookies being cakier than the book's illustration, they were delicious and they did have a ton of orange flavor. I already have a favorite go-to chocolate chip recipe, so my next experiment will be to add orange zest to that and see if I get the similar result.

My partner made the filled sourdough dumplings, and although he also thought the process was a lot of work and took a ton of time, we both ended up really happy with the results. This also might have been user error, but the recipe made way more filling than he had the dough for, so he ended up buying dumpling wrappers for the rest of the filling, and tbh I think this has started a whole new cooking era for him, because now he is all about the homemade dumpling possibilities!

Not sure why, but it took me almost a month to receive in the mail--it was marked Amazon Prime. Maybe I had to wait for a new edition to be printed.
I already had my starter going and was using some of my "same old" sourdough cookbooks gifted me by my mom; of which I had previously ho-hum results.
So far I really like everything about this cookbook. It comes across as more modern to me and I am just really vibing with it. I started using my mason jar lids on my sourdough as opposed to a fabric cap -which my mom always did. It made a huge, almost immediate difference. My starter is so bubbly.

The discard recipes are inspiring. Another big issue with me and sourdough. I've just been going with the flow on my discard. Make a puffed pancake for breakfast-toss some starter in. I've done this for several different recipes. Yesterday I made pizza crust with discard. The dough was so lovely I shared the other half with my daughter. Both of our pizzas were remarkable.

Today I have the Potato Sandwich Loaf going-using my new pullman pan.

What I appreciate about Sourdough Everyday: Creative Recipes for Breads, Crackers, Flatbreads, Sweet Treats, and More are the detailed instructions and the wide range of recipes offered.

The starter recipe begins with much smaller amounts of water and flour than others I've seen (and attempted) then adds on to it once it begins to flourish. There are day by day photos of we should expect our starter to look and detailed instructions with photos on how to manipulate the dough for proofing.

The ingredient lists include both volume and weight measurements, which I appreciate.

The recipes range from beginners’ sourdough to both pasta and ramen noodles all the way to cookies and Moroccan empanadas.

Sourdough Everyday is a valuable resource for the home sourdough baker.

An excellent book! I just started making sourdough bread recently and it always made me sad to discard most of the starter. With this book, I can make more uses out of the starter, from fancy involved recipes that take two days to quick and easy recipes that take half a day. I love all the creative uses of sourdough starter in this book, from ramen noodles and dumpling wrappers to focaccia to breadsticks to pastries. It makes baking more fun to utilize sourdough starter and to give familiar recipes a sourdough infusion.

So far, I have made the breadsticks, roti, dumpling wrappers, focaccia and crepes, and soon I intend to make ramen noodles, zucchini bread and more.

The book is written in clear and simple language and is approachable for new and experienced bakers alike.

I basically want to try every single recipe in this book. I love that it includes a mix of both sourdough bread recipes and recipes that use all the discard that is created when you maintain a starter. Now I just need to decide what to try first.
One caveat: I’d recommend reading another book for sourdough basics and trouble shooting, because this one is very light on technique. There are some basic instructions in the first section, but if you’re not already familiar with sourdough baking, you’ll want another resource.

Another photogenic but badly edited book written by an influencer.

The Beginner’s Sourdough Bread — the most basic recipe — has amounts that don’t add up.

For the active sourdough starter:
23g starter
45g water
45g bread flour
= 113g

For the dough:
120g active sourdough starter, and keep a portion to maintain and feed.

There will be 7g of starter missing for the recipe and none left to keep.

Disappointing.

Several of these recipes aren’t practical for myself or my family, but the milk bread was absolutely delicious, along with the tortillas (which I’ve made several times), pierogi, and lemon ricotta pancakes.

I do appreciate the book’s layout and the fact that the recipe instructions are clear and easy to follow. She also has great step by step instructions in the beginning (with pictures!) on making an artisan loaf.

This book is packed with super helpful tips that are easy to follow, even for beginners. I really appreciate how the author breaks things down in a simple and approachable way.

I love the minimalist style of the book, both in the layout and the writing. It’s clean, elegant, and makes the reading experience so enjoyable. The photos are beautiful and inspiring. I didn’t know you can make so many things with sourdough starter.

Sourdough bakers will enjoy this cookbook! Hannah Cruz did a great job with her cookbook of Sourdough Everyday. The instructions, recipes, and picture are understandable.
I made three of her recipes and my family critiqued all of them saying the breads where great and to continuing baking them.... beginner sourdough bread, whole wheat country loaf, and orange cranberry milk bread.

Things have changed since I got my first started 20+ years ago and started making bread with a lone recipe. I remember being so excited to find a pamphlet at a gift shop with other recipes to try! This is the book I wish I had had with step-by-step instructions and discard recipes. There is such good information in here! Definitely one to hold on to.

I heard Hannah Dela Cruz on the sourdough podcast and knew I would love her collection! This book is unique because of the amount of discard recipes and due to the recipes you wouldn’t think to find in a sourdough book! Im so happy to own this book!

I just know I’m going to keep looking back on this throughout my sourdough journey. She makes something really quite difficult, very easy to understand. This book has given me the belief that i too can maintain as well as begin my sourdough, I love it!! All good things!

I think there may have been a typographical error in a recipe or 2, but I found this cookbook helpful for sourdough recipe ideas and tips.

Out of all the sourdough books I own, this one has found a permanent home in the back of my bookcase. The recipes just didn't sing to me like so many other sourdough books.

If you're making sourdough, chances are you'll end up with extra active starter or discard at some point, and chances are also good that you'll eventually grow tired of pancakes, waffles, and pizza as a use for these. So far, I've tried the recipes for focaccia and scallion pancakes, both of which I enjoyed.
