Love and War #5

Antagonist

Rate this book
His fate is to save a planet in crisis.
Survival comes second to that.

That’s what Kade of House Shadow Wing has always believed, ever since his parents were executed for their political beliefs and he was jailed for daring to be their son. Just his luck that a female human diplomat with hard eyes and a silver tongue would choose the most inconvenient possible moment to barrel in, upending all of Kade’s carefully constructed plans.

With the situation on Ilarius descending into chaos, Ambassador Isadora Martinez makes him question all of his assumptions about the future. A former Terra Novan Special Forces Major and current pain in Kade’s ass, Martinez seems to think there’s a way out of this mess that doesn’t involve blood running like a river through the streets of the Capital.

But talk is cheap in Kade’s world. When the pair become the prime targets of an out-of-control Regime desperate to cling to power, their ability to work together will mean life or death not only for themselves, but also for the besieged human population they’re struggling to protect.

The war for Ilarius’ future just went from cold to hot.
Until it’s won, Kade can’t afford to think about a future beyond the fight for survival.

USA Today bestselling author R. A. Steffan lives in New Mexico, where the sunsets paint the mountains purple, and roadrunners roam the desert endlessly in search of their coyote victims. When she’s not busy writing stories about people loving each other in all sorts of different and interesting ways, she can be found taking care of her small menagerie of critters.

A rebel to the core, she is currently sticking it to the man by illegally harvesting graywater from the kitchen and bathroom sinks to water trees outside. This fearless disregard for societal norms extends to her writing, as well. There, you will find polyamory along with straight, gay, bisexual, and non-gender conforming love of all flavors. You will also find families of choice, profound friendships, adventure, danger, and good triumphing over evil.

That, and sex. Lots of sex. Most of which is not the vanilla variety.

Isadora is an ambassador and Kade is part of the resistance. They are both set up for murder, and while being transported for off planet interrogation their transport ship is hijacked. They take matters I their own hands and escape....only while engaging in their escape the device that's giving Kade the medication he needs to keep his system in balance is broken. He's now without it and only has hours before he'll be brain dead. Kade makes Isadora promise that if he should die, she will take his place in the resistance.

I like Isadora, she's not a weak woman/human. Kade has always been a character I thought could have in interesting story. They work well together. It's been a good series!!

Great finale

Kade is the most brash element of the Shadow Wing. Always analytical and aloof from the other members but loving them all the same. Fighting the Regime is all that matters. His medical condition is very limiting and has the weight of a death sentence over his head. He dared not to dream life could be different until he meets ambassador Martinez. She gets under his skin in a way that could have unpredictable consequences. Will they be able to fight the Regime and still build something else, or is Kade to jaded and far gone? Very fitting end to a wonderful series...

Best book in the series.

This book had a much better balance of action and politics than the previous ones, and it had a really satisfying conclusion. Kade and Isadora are by far my favorite couple in this series with much better chemistry than the others.

And that little epilogue that came out of nowhere yet tied up a loose end no one would have even considered. It was fantastic. It was humorous and really unexpected, and all the better for it. Lol.

Rebellion

This story is an ode to rebels who buck great insurmountable odds to topple a dictatorial regime that threatens freewill. Also romance happens.

In this last installment of the Love and War series, we get the focus on Cade, who is much loved by all, and ambassador Isadora Martinez. As a reader of the rest of the series, I didn’t have a feeling for Cade in the other books. It doesn’t help that I listen to the audios over reading and the narrator (who is quite good) makes the voices of Cade and Draven close enough that I get them confused.

That stated, this was a mighty fine book! It takes care of its own story, which is full of adventure, including a murder plot and kidnapping of our main pair. It also wraps up the big story, so it might by slightly longer than the other books to give time for it.

Through the course of this story, I feel I got to know the character I missed in all the other books, and the ending was very satisfying. I was especially proud of the sex scenes because Steffan does these well, but she made them fit the needs of the characters. Cade and Isadora don’t behave the same way Hunter and Skye do. Their scenes are appropriately different. I think it’s a sign of how well that Steffan knows her characters.

The narration was excellent as always. As I stated above, I had a few niggles, but Gwendolyn Druyor is a fantastic performer. I will happily continue listening to her read nearly anything.

The book could stand alone, and even though it’s part of a 5 book series, Steffan tried to make this something where people could enter at any time. While that may be true, do yourself a favor and go back to the beginning. All the stories are fast paced and entertaining fun. You won’t regret it. Plus, Steffan usually releases omnibus editions once a series is complete, so that would save you a little cash if that was a concern.

Recommended for those who like scifi, romance, and scifi romance.

I was suprised and conpleatly blown away by all 5 books in this emotinal series.
i have read all comments on these books and i realy wonder why not more people are reading these amazingly written Books.
I picked them up by chance when i was just looking for a fun audiobook to pass a long weekend and i found new friends in this rag tag team of characters. I'll be sure to visit them often and enjoy the love friendship and family the writer has so briliantly put on the page.
The author has done an amazing job when i feel every emotion in a book and forget the real world for a time and relax into the world the've created.
I could feel every loss and i wished the end would never have to come but as life goes all things must come to an end even when it hurts just a little.
