If you enjoyed Line of Duty then this is the police procedural for you! Traffic is the second page turner written by Coventry author, Nicky Downes. 'You care for those women more than you do your two daughters.' DI Amelia Barton, a widow with two young daughters, knows this isn't true, but who else will fight for trafficked women? Who else will take time to listen and find refuge for them? Who else would understand that you don't need chains or weapons to exert power or enslave? Amelia is a senior detective in the Sex Trafficking Unit of the National Crime Agency. The bodies of two women, branded with the same rose tattoo, are found in quick succession. The team have been told by other, recently freed, women that they are searching for a trafficker and possible murderer known as The Devil. But Amelia is fighting her own demon... DS Jake Travis. Will she find The Devil, or will Jake destroy everything she has fought for when he goes undercover, putting the trafficked women at even greater risk?
I’m a lover of extremes. I own a narrowboat and you’ll often find me cruising the Oxford and Coventry canals. I, also, own a Harley Davidson. I learnt to ride at 50. Best thing I’ve ever done.
I’ve loved reading crime fiction since I was a child. I devoured Nancy Drew, then Agatha Christie, then Dorothy L. Sayers.
My current favourite authors are: Val McDermid, Mark Billingham, Fiona Cummins, Angela Clarke and Angela Marsons.
My debut novel, Bat Girl, is now available on Amazon Kindle and paperback.
I’m currently writing a police procedural series featuring DI Amelia Barton of the National Crime Agency.
I read this off the back of the authors first novel Bat Girl. The books are not in the same series or related in any way. However you can see some of the authors style and pace, so if you liked Bat Girl you are likely to enjoy this novel and visa versa. Traffic is the first novel in the series with the protagonist Amelia Barton. I don't want to give too much away, but a awful lot happens in the novel but it also leave a number of plot lines open to carry into the next novel. Written in such a way that you enjoy the novel as a stand alone piece, but also look forward to the next one. As with the first novel I read it in a short period of time as it was a real page turner.
2.5* It was ok. I didn't find it very engaging but it was readable. Probably not bad for the first book in a new series. I found the premise good but for me it lacked excitement and suspense, no depth to the storyline. Maybe book two holds more promise, however I think I'll pass. Give it a go, it just wasn't for me.
Gripping storyline dealing with important current issues. I liked the way the author sensitively tackled the dark themes. An interesting main character with a story that I'd like to read more about. Well written and good suspense to keep you reading on.
Authentic characters in this chilling book about the reality for women who are the victims of trafficking and those who are trying to support them. Well researched. Can see DI Amelia Barton experiencing a few more challenges in the future. The book certainly makes you think about what's going on in your street!
