He sees what she's long hidden ... especially from herself. Meet Josh Kincannon, high school principal, single father of three, and thus, as he reminds himself ruefully, essentially celibate back into misty memory and forward into the foreseeable future. After three months of trying to work with Vanessa Irish via phone and e-mails on a project to help tiny Drago, Illinois, Josh believes he has an accurate picture of Zeke-Tech's CFO: Conscientious? Oh, yeah. Intelligent? Absolutely. Agreeable? Not so much. Then he catches sight of her wild, vibrant robe and begins to wonder what other elements might form a portrait of Vanessa Irish. Every time she goes into her I'm-so-boring-I-disappear-against-white-walls act, he remembers that vibrant, wild fabric hanging on the corner of a door and he gets curious. And the more curious he becomes, the more he discovers about her that has him feeling things a whole lot hotter than curiosity. Things that shake up life as single parent to his three kids, scrape against his career as high school principal and -- oh, yes -- definitely threaten his stretch of celibacy. Numbers, that's where Vanessa is comfortable. Not all this interaction with people that she's been pitched into. Especially interacting with Josh Kincannon. Why does he insist on drawing her into his small town, his life, his children? And the biggest question -- what kind of man is this, who not only looks at her, but SEES her, when that's the last thing she wants? . . . or is it?
USA Today bestselling author Patricia McLinn’s novels—cited by reviewers for warmth, wit and vivid characterization – have won numerous regional and national awards and been on national bestseller lists.
In addition to her romance and women’s fiction books, Patricia is the author of the Caught Dead in Wyoming mystery series, which adds a touch of humor and romance to figuring out whodunit.
Patricia received BA and MSJ degrees from Northwestern University. She was a sports writer (Rockford, Ill.), assistant sports editor (Charlotte, N.C.) and—for 20-plus years—an editor at the Washington Post.
She has spoken about writing from Melbourne, Australia to Washington, D.C., including being a guest-speaker at the Smithsonian Institution. She is now living in Northern Kentucky, and writing full-time. Patricia loves to hear from readers through her website, Facebook, Goodreads, and Twitter.
So far this is my favorite book in this series. Josh is drawn to Vanessa, the CFO of Zeke-Tech, from the first time he sees into her bedroom. When he finally meets her in person, he thinks there has to be more to her because of the color of the robe in her room. Vanessa tries not to get involved with the small town because she doesn't know how to relate to other people. She looks at Drago as a place to hold people back. Josh keeps persisting in getting her involved so she can see that Drago is not a bad place. When she starts to hang around Josh's three kids, she doesn't know what to do. Xena resents her, Topher relates to her, and Livvie just adores her. The more time she spends with them, the more she grows attached. However, she doesn't feel like she is lovable because of how she was raised. After a big argument over what is important to each other, Vanessa realizes that there is more to life than just work and that maybe she can have it all. I liked the characters because it does show how it is when a parent starts dating again and how the children can react to the situation. I just wish there had been more to the ending because I felt like it just ended.
Well--I keep saying after each book by Patricia is the best--& I still say that for this one. Nice story, good humor as is normal for her stories, but I really laughed in one particular place toward the end--I won't give it away. But it really made me laugh till tears came! I have loved all the books so far in practically all the series I have started, and have several in the wings awaiting.
Vanessa, the main female character is not a believable person! ! really enjoy most of Patricia McLinn's series, so I hope the fourth book in this series is better.
Beautiful romance. Vanessa is a big city ice queen workaholic. Josh is an extroverted single father in small town Drago who is “essentially celibate back into misty memory and forward into the foreseeable future.” What an unlikely couple! But then there IS that gorgeous peacock robe … Rated R.
This is an ebook reissue of a novel originally published in the 90s (I assume rights have reverted). I saw it reviewed on Dear Author and was intrigued by the description of the heroine; I think the reviewer said that she thought for awhile that the heroine was somewhere on the autism spectrum. It turned out in the story that she actually had a complicated and unusual childhood, which affected her ability to interact with people. In any case, she was a lot of fun to read about and a very memorable heroine. She is always honest and straightforward, for one thing--thus not always particularly tactful. For another, she's the CFO for a very successful software/ computer company who is very competent, enjoys her work and expects efficiency and competence from all around her.
The hero is much less memorable--a people person and high school principal (thus the title--*shudder*) but still a nice foil for the heroine.
I liked just about everything about this book. I generally find small town romance cloying, but the secondary characters in this novel are drawn extremely well and so manage to avoid being irritating stereotypes. Best of all are the hero's kids, who are about as memorable as the two main characters.
I am looking for the other books in the series; last time I checked they weren't available on Kindle yet.
I think if you like character-driven books, you'll like this one. To be honest, the romance itself wasn't all that compelling. And yet the people and the story carried the book, and I look forward to reading more my McLinn.
Decent read. I like Patricia McLinn's stories. Not her best but still enjoyable. I didn't really understand why the heroine had so much trouble communicating - does she have Aspergers or something? I mean, I understand she grew up in a commune(ity) but she's been out of it for years.
Falling for Her by Patricia McLinn Seasons in a Small Town Series Book Three Josh Kincannon: Principal of the local high school, outgoing, divorced, raising his three kids on his own. Happy in his small town of Drago, Illinois.
Vanessa Irish: CFO of Zeke-Tech, prefers being alone, single with no plans of changing that state. Blunt, very blunt. Works in her office in Virginia and that's pretty much her life. Until Zeke has her coming to Drago to help set up the computer lab.
I'm loving this series and it continues with this book. Josh and Vanessa are great characters. Vanessa has a very unique way about her that sets her apart from other characters. And Josh's three kids are awesome too. They all come alive and add to the story. **Sexual Content http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
