This was a thousand percent a vibe read, and yes it was a little silly at times, but would you have been able to hear me talking out loud to them at times? Also yes.😁
This Earl was not wicked, he was an absolute sweetheart, a gentle giant.❤️
Verity was assaulted by the son of a duke, her brother and mother chastised her for the rather violent attack, because they sucked! She spent 4 years dealing with the trauma, and decided enough was enough.
She visits the notorious James, an Earl in his own right, however a little rough around the edges with a proposal of mutual benefit. He is a famous bare knuckle fighter, but as I mentioned, he lacks sophistication due to a very neglectful upbringing, and Verity proposes she teaches him refinery and he teaches he to fight. Yes silly but it was done in a very cute way.
During their clandestine meetings they develop a friendship, and true kindred spirit kind of thing. (like us on GR)) and I was so giddy to see how they started to fall in love without fully understanding what was happening to them.
I was screaming at them to get their act together 🙄
James makes sure Verity gets her revenge and even though it ruins her, this is the catharsis she needs to be rid of her haunted past.
Listen there were eye roll moments, but it actually became emotional and sweet for me and hope it does for you
too.❤️

LOVED this couple!! Would have been a 5-star but I didn’t get enough time in the story with them as a couple as I really wanted. This one def needs a follow-up novel or extended epilogue please!!!

This tale focuses on Lady Verity Ayles, who desperately needs a way to protect herself since she is still fearful of a traumatic incident from years earlier. She appears on the doorstep of James Radcliffe, Earl of Maschelly, to request his assistance in learning how to fight defensively. James happens to be a man with a wicked reputation, which leads her to offer to teach him to become a proper gentleman in exchange.

The notorious Earl of Maschelly, whose reputation precedes him, decided to aid this woman out of good conscience. The training brings them into closer contact than a proper gentleman would be comfortable with. She looked completely heavenly, no matter how she was dressed. Together these two characters entertain the reader with a sufficiently compelling tale, including twists and tales and then a confrontation that could change things greatly.
This is NOT a clean series. Those who actually prefer steamy to clean and sweet might not view it as flawed. Due to this aspect, I recommend it with reservations. If you prefer clean and sweet reads, avoid this book. It is not fair to an author when readers provide bad reviews about steamy scenes if they know they are included in advance. I have been guilty of this offense myself. It takes a lot of time and effort for an author to research and write each book. And there are readers who prefer the material included in this one to a clean and wholesome read. However, I actually prefer the latter. This does have steamy sex scenes, so if you like a sex-free book this is not it. If you enjoy steamy reads, jump into this book looking forward to plenty.
When the Earl was Wicked is able to stand on its own, but if you read them in order, you will be more familiar with some of the characters that carry over. Each story does include its own H.E.A., which is always a good way to conclude the adventure you have chosen to become a part of. This reader would have benefited from an epilogue.

When the Earl was Wicked brings us Verity and James’s story. I liked it, but it’s a slow burn, friends to lovers romance… so if you’re in the mood for some spice or a rake, keep looking because James isn’t wicked at all.
This is the only book of the series I’ve read, and I never felt lost. It sounds like James was a bit ick with his man-whoring (we’re told rumors say he’s with 10-ish different women every week) but other than one scene at the beginning of the book where he has second thoughts and asks her to leave… OW aren’t really an issue.
The book opens with Verity visiting James to ask if he’ll tutor her in pugilism in exchange for gentlemen lessons, so he can court a lady. She knows he’s a boxer and has heard he has aided other women needing protection. (Verity was nearly raped several years earlier and is ready to move past it.)
Bottom Line- I really liked both main characters and enjoyed their chemistry. My only complaint is that it takes most of the book for them to express their feelings, so we get very little page time with them as a couple, and the epilogue is only two weeks later.

A little more than two hundred pages and still, they stole, melted and reshaped my heart like it was nothing!
“How are you so sweet?” he demanded gruffly.
“I eat a lot of delicacies and cakes.”
A snort sounded. “You are also silly. But I like it.”
“Somehow I am gathering you believe this to be flattery?”
“Yes,” he retorted, without an instant’s hesitation.
The genuine friendship James and Verity shared warmed my soul; the little moments they stole, the teasing and the respect and admiration they felt for one another... My poor heart did not stand a chance! Also, the fact James never, for even a second, tries to deny Verity's truth and experience, the fact he always asks her permission for even the smallest of touches... Yeah, consent is hot💙
There are a few scenes that made forget how to breathe, that's how gutwrenching they were... The "I dare because I do not want to be afraid anymore" scene, the "he should have loved you endlessly because you were a part of her" scene, then the scene where Verity finally faces her awful gaslighting brother and mother as well as the one when James resds his mother's diaries... And every time Verity freezes, gets locked in the state of helplessness because of her trauma. Just 💔
side note: always a pleasure to see worsley make his suave cameo 😏💖

I was in the mood for a novella, but not wanting to sacrifice plot, swoon or steam, and this one hit the spot!
The set up: the FMC wanted the MMC to teach her how to fight, and in return she’d tutor him on how to become more refined to aid in his search for a wife.
James was such a dreamboat (not a scoundrel or wicked at all, really), his protectiveness when he learned why Verity wanted fighting lessons made me all melty inside. 😍 And Verity’s determination to move past her trauma had me rooting for her.
I really enjoyed this one, a quick read that still ticked a lot of my boxes.

I fell in love with this couple and their story. She's petite, and has been hurt by evil OM, and her family has not protected her as they ought. She asks the H to teach her the skills she needs to make sure she isn't at risk again. He's wonderful, a quiet man who admires the h at first, then falls in love with her. It was a sweet story, that deserved an epilogue where he returns to his home and introduces her to those who raised him. That would have made it 5 stars.

Lady Verity Ayles, tired of the fear that keeps her isolated and unable to truly live, secretly requests the help of the scandalous James Radcliffe, the Earl of Maschelly - she wants him to teach her how to fight, how to defend herself. A request that leads them both onto an unexpected path.
Overall, a lovely and sweet short read, I do wish we had gotten an epilogue where he returned home with Verity.

How I do love Mrs Stacy Reid’s work, she has such a talent to being unconventional persons together.
And this new piece of work matches it.
Lady Verity Ayles has had enough of hiding and having nightmares, after five years trying to nurse her wounds, it is time she takes her life in hands and finds a way to face London ton without fear.
But for this, she must request the help of the most inappropriate man among the peer, The Earl of Maschelly.
When James Radcliffe received the visit of a masked and unknown young lady, he only thought to send her back home but her story moved something deeper in him, so he is here accepting to train her how to fight while she will ease his way in London’s society.
I do adored how they interacted together, he revealing her inner strength when she helped him unveiling the caring James he kept hidden.
They were fantastic, immediately attracted to another but so afraid also to break their blooming relationship. Mrs Reid gave them time to get acquainted, never rushing their interactions, until they can’t deny their feelings but also when they matured enough to face their past and decide who and what they want for their future.
One more great addition in this series.

Was good but not the best

More than angst the big bad contender for most satisfying feeling when watching people falling in love or being in love with each other for years is the yearning.
Unlike angst conflict is not needed. Titillating, funny, romantic moments can take place and the yearning drives them into your heart with a strength I think angst fails to the deliver most of the time without sullying the relationship or even the characters for the sake of feeling.
I have to say… James has to be one of my favorite heroes to date. He was caring and protective but he gave Verity space to spread her wings. He loved her honestly, without reservations even when he had to hold himself back from reaching for her, respecting her wishes and aspirations, putting them above more than his on.
Verity was wonderful as well. Headstrong, honest to herself and not afraid of seating herself against those who hurt people for the sake of it.
Both hero and heroines are both equally matched in their spectacular character and love for each other.
It was delight to see such well developed story telling in a short story.

Lady Verity Ayles was sexually assaulted by the son of a duke and is suffering with what is now known as "PTSD." She seeks to make a clandestine deal with James Radcliffe, the Earl of Machelly, who is a huge and frightening man. It seems the earl was abandoned by his noble father and has had to scramble and literally fight his way to respectability. The deal? Lady Verity wants the earl to teach her how to fight dirty to protect herself from another attack and she agrees to teach the fierce James Radcliffe the finer points of becoming a gentleman. Verity gambles all of her reputation on this but does not expect to develop feelings for the unpolished, brutal earl. Likewise, the earl begins to admire Lady Verity's courage, intelligence and beauty. I only marked down the story from 5 to 4 stars because I personally don't care for either profanity or graphic sexual scenes in my reads. (don't think it adds anything significant to this otherwise excellent book) However, the story is so compelling and unique that it deserves a shout-out.

I really liked the story and characters, especially James was amazing. The story was just a tad too short. Sadly I found some spelling errors, more than in other books.

I loved the characters of Verity and James. Both had traumatic experiences in their past to overcome and I enjoyed the way they helped each other. The memories that Verity needed to dismiss, were ones that were deep rooted and not easily forgotten. James had found a way to work through his past. I enjoyed their connection and it was satisfying to see the villain get his comeuppance. I would have liked an epilogue though. This was a very entertaining read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I'm starting this book off on the wrong foot, if only because our dear James is the best friend of Sebastian Shaw, MMC of book 3. In that book, James kept pushing Sebastian to have a mistress since he dared not be as uninhibited in bed as he wanted with Fanny, his wife. Now.... if James did that to rile Fanny up and to stir more passion into his best friend's marriage OR he really wanted his best friend to have a side piece other than his wife remains to be be verified. So I dare say, the jury is still out on James. 👀
Despite that, for some reason, I just knew, I KNEW, I was going to love James' book. And it did not disappoint. I am so in love with these two. I dare say they are top favourite couple in this series. 😍
I have realised though that SR has an affinity to write about women disguised as men. It's the third book where the plot requires the h to dress as a man. Hmm 🤔
I am truly baffled how SR can make a novella look like a complete story. Never did I feel the plot lacking, the events rushed or their love incomplete. The whole book is so wholesome.
James has a very sad upbringing. He's honourable and loyal to the core. He's described as an ill-bred brute. Rough around the edges. And a regular in ill reputed places.
Verity, having been the victim of SA which sentenced her to social isolation, finally wants to assauge her fear and be free. She approaches James with a scandalous plan. Teach her self defence and in return she'll ease his way into society with propriety lessons.
Their sexual tension is delicious and their self doubt and yearning for each other is so heartfelt. These two were made for each other.
The scene where she finally avenges her honour and threw all her rage and frustration into that punch and kick reverberated within me. I screamed in cheer and felt deep satisfaction for her and for every other woman who has been abused whether in fiction or in reality. I wish all women had a ♡James♡.
🥰 Moments that made me melt in awe: 🫠
🫂 When she surprises him with a hug and squeezes him tight. I adore these scenes.
✒️ His hilarious attempt at writing her a poem.
👀 When he watches her discreetly in balls.
🛌 when she watches him sleep.
💪 All the times she stood up to her vile brother.
😔 A moment I wished it happened differently:
🩰 After their rigorous lessons, I wished his first public dance was actually with her and not with a Lady Anna.
Last but not least. I'm in a dilemma. Soooooo... we are made to believe James is a man of disreputable behaviour. A rake, a debaucher, the wicked-est of all wickeds. And everything in the book points to that. However, there are a few remarks here and there which I will take to heart and form my opinion accordingly.
☝️ James burns for a love match like that of his parents and he says that that want shaped him to be honest and honourable.
✌️He turns women away when they come knocking on his door looking for a night of sin. And regrets having given false hopes to some of them by admitting them into his house.
3️⃣ He's shocked that his wicked ways are the hottest rumours being circulated amongst the ton.
Because of the aforementioned clues, I want to pacify my mind by thinking that James is neither wicked nor a manwhore. ✋🏻
EXCERPTS THAT WILL LIVE FREE IN MY HEAD:
His regard warmed with something teasing and tender. “Did you appreciate it when I told you just now, how exquisitely ravishing you are?” She looked at him rather helplessly. “You said beautiful.” “They hold the same meaning,” he said with a smile which crinkled the corner of his eyes. “Yes,” she said with a touch of asperity. “My heart jerked with a thrill I have never experienced in my entire life.” Verity bit back a smile as she realized, with satisfaction, that she had succeeded in discomfiting him. “Are you blushing, my lord?” He scowled. “Of course not.” Yet there was the slightest tinge of flush along his rugged cheekbones. The notion she could ruffle the feathers of a man so self-assured sent a dizzying surge of warmth through her veins. She flashed a mischievous smile at him, and murmured, “Another lesson: compliments must not be overly bold or familiar lest the line of propriety is breached. They must be tender, subtle, yet artful.” “Lesson noted.”

And I suspect you know it, James. You helped me simply because you want to see me bloom," she whispered achingly. "What manner of man acts like this? One who has honor and courage, and all the fine qualities my papa would say were tip-top."
“How are you so sweet?” he demanded gruffly. “I eat a lot of delicacies and cakes.”
A snort sounded. “You are also silly. But I like it.”
“Somehow I am gathering you believe this to be flattery?”
“Yes,” he retorted, without an instant’s hesitation.

“What I feel for you, James will never pass. You torment my dreams. You enter a room, and my heart beats, and even long after I have left your presence, there is a smile, a happiness in my soul I cannot explain, only want to bask in. You make me feel, James. I feel bound by touch.” She kissed the corner of his mouth, and down to his collarbone.

They stared at each other, and something warm and tender shifted in his eyes. He lifted the flowers to her, and she reached over the threshold and took them, dipping her face into their petals and inhaling deeply. “Thank you," she murmured, feeling a bewildering mix of hope and confusion. “I have some poems too,” he muttered. It was then she noted a small brown book in his hand. During their lessons, he had sworn nothing could induce him to pen poetry and sonnets to a lady. Warmth burst in her chest like sunshine. “But I confess they are terrible. I have been working on them since you left last night, without saying goodbye.” Verity flushed as the butler’s eyes widened. James opened the small book and cleared his throat. "Your eyes are brown and golden, but they remind me of the brightness of a blue summer sky. Your lips are lush and thick, but in a most delightful rosy way and not like a leg of lamb. Your—”
Verity giggled, a horrified sound came from the butler.

The fifth book in the Forever Yours series. I have read 1 and 2 -The Marquess and I and the Duke and I
- and this was by far the best read so far for me.
I loved the H and h - often the heroine annoys me but Verity didn't.
I would have loved 2 things for Verity to punch her arse brother and an epilogue, as I felt there was more to tell.

Wonderful story with exquisite characters, I adored Verity and James as a couple. My only quibble is that it ended so abruptly and no epilogue. I will be reading this novel many more times.

H. James Radcliffe, Earl of Maschelly, Prizefighter, father and mother deceased. (Finds Aunt and two female cousins). Friends Viscount Shaw, L. Worley.
Basic Story: Verity was abused by a Marquess five years before. He was encouraged by her brother. Both her mother and brother thought she lead him on. No one would defend her honor. She suffered nightmares for years. She decided she needed to take control and wanted to learn how to fight. She asked a friend and they pointed her to the Prizefighter, James Radcliffe.
Surprisingly, James decided to take her on teaching her to fight even having her dress as a man and watch fights at his club (owner L. Worley). She in turn taught him to be more a gentleman to attract a bride. They became good friends. When he felt she was ready he took her to his men's club. He fought her attacker from 5 years before and invited her into the ring to finish him off. She kicked her attacker in the balls and revealed herself. She had her vengeance.
Romance: Verity liked James, yes he was big but she felt safe and trusted him. She kissed him once and he responded but they agreed not to do that again and remained good friends. He attended a Ball and danced with a deb after they practiced alot. Afterwards he followed Verity into the gardens and asked if he could kiss her. It was wonderful.
Her brother brought her attacker,(the Marquess) to dance with her at a ball. She outright refused. She left and was headed toward her lady friends for protection. The Marquess followed her and had angry words about how she treated him. James came to the rescue, telling the Marquess to leave the lady alone and threatened violence if he touched her. James really wanted to kill the man for what he had done to Verity, five years before. He took her home.
After the fight at the club Verity went to James's townhouse instead of going home. They ended up giving in to their mutual attraction to one another and made love. She left before her mother and brother arrived home. They both had read the gossip rags and accused her of causing a scandal. But her mother had a change of heart telling her she was sorry for how they treated her after the Marquess attacked her five years before.
Verity was on her way out to meet James when he arrived on her doorstep to Propose. They married and his Aunt and cousins plus her Aunt Imogen moved in with them at their country seat.
Opinion: I enjoyed this romance very much. I have read about Prizefighters before but not about a woman taking self defence classes from the "Ton". Verity's family was awful. I'm glad she found someone worthy. I gave this 4 stars.

And that means aligning with James Radcliffe, the Earl of Maschelly—a scoundrel who spends his days in sin and self-indulgence, and his nights in reckless pursuits. Clearly, a man any young lady of good sense and reputation should stay away from.

His wicked reputation encourages ladies to approach him for clandestine affairs, never for anything as outrageous as Lady Verity’s request—to teach her how to fight. I love this series & this book is up there with the best. I absolutely adored James & Verity. They were like chalk & cheese but together they sizzled. Whilst James was thought of as a beast by polite society I adored him, yes he fought but he would fight to right wrongs, yes he was rough around the edges but who doesn’t want a hero that needs taming! Verity had at last decided to face her demons & I applauded that she did. This book took me through a gamut of emotions, laughing, angry & crying to name just three. The second visit to the fight club had me cheering. I read most of this book on a train jourmey & I’m so glad I was at home when I finished it as I had tears streaming down my face for such a lovely ending. Mistress Reid you've written another enthralling read – I loved it

The story centers when our heroine makes a deal that she will help the hero learn to woo ladies if in turn he helps her learn to fight so she can defend herself and feel safe again.
The heroine has suffered a terrible event in the past, and feels that she can only feel safe if she has learned to fight,
it was very emotional and beautiful to see how she grows from the moment she realizes that nothing of what happened in the past was her fault, and learned to like herself.
I also want to say that Stacy Reid was wonderful with the romance of this book, how we can feel what the characters felt, grow along with them and cry and laugh with them. The love of the characters was also very beautiful and healthy, they suported each other intensely and loved each other just the way they needed and also helped them to see each other the way they were and like it.

I love, love, love Stacy Reid's books. I am never disappointed in anything she writes. Her characters are well-flushed out, steamy love scenes and emotional plots.
Verity needs help and she seeks help from an unlikely source, James the Earl of Maschelly. She wants to learn how to fight, to protect herself from someone awful. This is somewhat a Pygmalion story in reverse - James will help Verity learn self defense and she will help him learn how to behave and be accepted in the ton.
Ooh, sparks fly between Verity and James! Their chemistry is super hot and as a reader I felt their connection to each other instantly. Grab this book and pick up anything Stacy Reid writes - you won't be disappointed!
