Utah Fury Hockey #9

Scoring Chance

Rate this book
Can a woman with a wounded past teach an arrogant hockey player humility or is she setting them both up for failure?

Amelia Curtis jumped at the chance to move to Salt Lake after getting a job offer to work with Madeline Murray at a physical therapy clinic. It’s not her dream job, but it offers exactly what she needs right now - a fresh start. Living with her sister, Elena, is a perk, but the best part is becoming friends with the Utah Fury players and the Pride. They welcome her with open arms, much to the frustration of the backup goaltender, Derrek Aston.

Derrek doesn’t fit in with the rest of the team. No matter how hard he works, they treat him like a kid. He’s determined to gain their respect and prove his value as a goaltender even though he doesn’t know where to start. When Amelia challenges him to change he has a choice, man up or sit down.

Brittney has been an avid reader since she can remember. Her parents' form of punishment for her growing up was taking away her books and making her go outside to play. She was born and raised in Southern California, with a brief hiatus in Arizona. She loves the beach, exercising, sleeping in, and cookies. She is an obsessive dog lover, although her affection currently has no outlet. Something that she is planning on remedying soon. She and her husband currently reside in the Rocky Mountains exploring and hiking as much as possible.

Redemption Story

I like that she took the background, usually forgettable jerk character and redeemed him through actual effort and work, not just because he was in love and that solved everything.

My favorite of the series by far. I didn't care much for Derrek in the other books, but I really liked how he redeemed himself here and how the other players were made to realize their own bad behavior towards him.

This was one of the better Utah Fury books that I’ve read in a while. I liked the theme of getting another chance to make a good impression when the first impression wasn’t good. I look forward to the next book.

Derrick doesn't understand when he is trying, to fit in and still, feels like an outsider. But, when one of, the Fury tries, to purposely take him out, during the drills. He has hit his limit of turning, to his other cheek. They throw down or at least start to. Until he is sent to his, Coach Abrams, the talk went better than he, thought it would go. He didn't condone the bad hit, but he needed to see if, Derrick could identify times he might have been insensitive. The times when he spoke, and left people, feeling resentful.

Amelia is, Elena’s younger, sister. She has been having, a very hard time with it, as of late. Amelia had finished her, Sports Trainer program none, too soon. You see, she met a guy, in the same program. They date and talk, about moving in together, and even marriage only, to find out he’s engaged. His fiance spreads rumors of, misconduct with a patient. She gets someone to back her because she, is mad at her, and not the ex. So, she left, Texas to work in, Utah.

Life in Utah is, fast and overwhelming. The one person she feels a connection, to is a backup goalie for, the Utah Fury Hockey team. What's even scarier, is that she met him on day one at a party thrown in her honor with the Team and the Pride. How can she feel so much in him, for him, with him, and more? She just needs, to know if it's one-sided, on her part. Can they keep it a secret until they, can navigate the waters between, friends and lovers? The teeter-tatter of love is thumbs down. They both want the other but can’t say it first for some reason.

This storyline had so many avenues to go down. They are all important and well worth navigating.

Derrick and Amelia

These two spent so much time trying to figure out whether the other person liked them, that it ate up the majority of the book. When they finally figured it out there might have been four or five pages of happiness before we skipped to Nikolay having lunch with Amelia. Come on, if you’re going to give me a love story. at least show me a little more love than what was here. This was definitely lacking in the happily ever after department. I’m glad they got together, and thank heavens it wasn’t sad like book #6, but I felt it left a whole lot to be desired.

And for heaven’s sake, find someone to proofread these books. I’ve read this deep into this series without complaining, but the proofreading problems are getting worse, not better with each book.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the book. It was entertaining and I appreciated the transformation of Derrick as well as how she spoke up and defended him whenever she had the opportunity. Lots of speculation on does he/she like me that caused the story to draw out some. But otherwise good.
What I would recommend to the author is to update the previous book in the series. When Elaina is asked if she has any siblings she answers “zero”. So I was a little confused when I read this one that suddenly there was a sibling.

Loved this series

I loved the relationship between Derrek and Amelia. I truly enjoyedctge entire series, and hate that this was the last book in the series. I feel like I've lost some friends. I have all sorts of questions..lol..great writing when you feel this way! Thank you Brittney Mulliner for a truly wonderful series. Full of suspense, and emotions, and lots of love and laughter!

Derek had become the disrespected "kid" on the team. Amelia had moved in with her sister Elena to get out of a bad situation in Texas. They managed to become good friends, but that was the problem. They both wanted more. Interesting dynamics between Amelia and both the Pride and the Fury team. How they work it all out, and how Derek took responsibility and matured is good reading. Once again, I loved the happy ending.

I'm almost through the series

Ms Mulliner has developed a wonderful world for her SLC and her characters are beautifully written. There was only one glaring error I think. Madi is married to Eric so her last name isn't Murray. And it's still far fetched that professional athletes aren't going to have sex for weeks, even if they're in love.

Amazing

Can’t wait to see who is next to fall in love or a wrap up of all the amazing characters! The Pride can be a bit intimidating, but all these ladies love their men and friends to the fullest!

It was cute and sweet. However, it got kind of confusing and jumbled at times from perspectives. I think it would be better read in book form than kindle.

Don't judge a book by its cover

Derrick really surprised me in his story! I love how much he's changed over the series and bringing in Amelia really showed another side to him!

Cute sports romance

A little on the YA side, but it was a fun story.

Amelia has a chance to start over in Utah after a vindictive ex's girlfriend ruins her professional reputation in Texas.

Derrek needs a chance to start over with his teammates after getting off to a bad start that they can't seem to let go.

Their similar positions make them sympathetic to each other, in addition to being attracted as well, but Derrek is trying to take it slow since Amelia's been hurt. And Amelia is wondering if she misread Derrek's interest.

So yes, it's a miscommunication trope, but it was actually handled fairly realistically and resolved before reaching a point past my frustration level, so I enjoyed it & recommend it when you're looking for a lighthearted read after something more intense

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic
