Neil Buchanan is an English artist, photographer, and musician, widely recognized for his influential work in children's television. He is best known as the creator and presenter of the long-running CITV series Art Attack, which he fronted from its debut in 1990 until 2007. The show, known for its imaginative and accessible approach to art, earned two BAFTA awards and became a staple of British childhood entertainment. Buchanan also hosted several other popular children's programs, including Finders Keepers, It's a Mystery, and ZZZap!, which he also co-produced. Before his television career, Buchanan was a member of the heavy metal band Marseille, part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement. The band toured extensively and shared stages with acts such as Judas Priest and Whitesnake. He briefly returned to music when Marseille reformed in 2009, but later stepped away to focus on consultancy work in children's media. Buchanan began his television career on No. 73 in the early 1980s and went on to become a familiar face on Saturday morning TV, later appearing on Motormouth, Animal Crazy, and The CITV Awards. In 2000, he sold the rights to Art Attack in a major deal with Britt Allcroft (later Gullane Entertainment). In 2020, Buchanan made headlines when he publicly denied online rumors claiming he was the elusive street artist Banksy. While no longer active in front of the camera, his legacy as an innovative and beloved figure in British children's television remains enduring.
Wow back to the king of children's art Neil Buchanan. Had to get this book for my little ones. We have a art day every Friday and needed some projects this book is perfect and absolutely stuffed full of fantastic engaging projects that even adults want to finish. Step by step amazing instructions. This book is huge 80 different projects all so good you really don't know what to try first. I also love this book as it uses stuff you really would already have if you have arty children so I didn't have to buy anything in. Love it and highly recommend. Best art books I've come across. Buy this one before all the smaller books in this range as I brought them all but everything in the smaller books is in this massive book. Enjoy.
This is not what I would normally spend money on, but this was a birthday gift from my very sweet 8 ...or was it 9... year-old twin cousins.
This was at most, a 2 minute-read. To sum up, this book would be helpful to anyone just starting to take an interest in art, or developing a talent for visual art at a young age, say, if said person were 8 or 9. It's brief, it has a butt-load of pictures, it has mini step-by-step instructions, it's colorful and it would be perfect for an age group younger than mine.
When I was much younger, I remember how much I loved Neil Buchanan and watching Art Attack on the tellie. He was so clever with pretty things and I thought it was so awesome to have a job just making art and getting your hands dirty all day, and he taught me a few tricks I still use to this day. I always looked forward to the bit in each episode where he just grabbed a bunch of junk and made the most incredible giant pictures on any random flat surface, like say, the park. That for me was always very inspiring, and if anything, Neil taught me it was possible to create beauty with just about anything. A lot of tiny things make a big picture, as it was.
That said, I'm glad that my cousins have begun to share that same love for art as well. It's much better than that mindless Tom and Jerry, Asterix and Obelix bullshit they watch every day.
