A wounded singer’s second act. A bodyguard’s redemption. Two grieving souls find healing in love’s sweetest song.

Sage
Four years ago, a brutal attack shot down my soaring music career. My bodyguard, a man I loved like a brother, was killed, and serious injuries left my voice permanently damaged.
Songs silenced, I retreated to my Vermont home, unsure I’d ever perform again.
Now I’m ready to go public with my new act. But, yeah, I’m a little nervous. So to handle security for a trial-run tour, I’m hiring a guy I trust absolutely—Antonio Callan, my former bodyguard’s brother.
But when Antonio shows up, all super-chill fierceness and warm, understanding eyes, I’m up against an unexpected risk—losing my heart.

Antonio
Touring backwoods bars with a reclusive singer is the wrong gig at the wrong time. But how can I refuse the wounded kid my brother thought of as family?
After a week in Vermont, I’m feeling more helpless than heroic.
Sage has grown up, and I’m crazy-attracted to him. His broken-but-beautiful voice knocks me out, and his quiet courage sings to my soul. The more time we spend in close quarters, the harder it becomes to resist our attraction.
Soon, Sage’s second act is rocketing to the top of the charts, and being his hero takes on a whole new meaning. It’s up to me to take his cue and find the courage to reach for a star.

Second Song is the first in the two-book Sugarhouse Blues series and can be read as a stand-alone. Contains angsty-hot pining (and Vermont pines), first-time lovin’, sappy songs (and Vermont maples), and the healing power of loooooove.

Beautifully written, lyrical, almost surreal at times ... the characters came alive, as did the setting.

This is a truly romantic story with a heartwarming epilogue. I love hurt/comfort themes, and this book delivered on all counts.

Parts of the story dragged (think slooooow burn), and the kids were too present for my liking, but it was worth it in the end.

I am not really familiar with Edie Danford's work yet. Some of her books are on my TBR-list, but this is the first one I've read so far. I really enjoyed it and I will definitely be checking out those other books ;)

That said, this story did start out a bit slow, and considering the number of pages, it had me worried for a while. I like a nice slow build as much as the next person, but I am also a bit impatient....am I still making sense ???

Thankfully it picked up a bit towards the end, but I am gonna be honest here and say that I would have enjoyed a bit of a faster pace.

The writing style was a bit different then what I am used to, which was kind of refreshing.  I especially liked the romantic epilogue, it made up for a lot of frustration I felt along the way. Talking about frustration.... I am not so sure how I feel about Shiloh.

This was a very emotional story and Sage and Antonio definitely tugged on my heartstrings. They both deserved a second chance at life...a second song ....

If you're a fan of hurt-comfort stories, then you should definitely give this one a go.

Oh my... such a heartwarming and captivating story.
It was like the story had a voice, a vibe I can't explain, but it did things to me and my heart.
Good things. The end.

I liked this one. I did. But something was off for me. No glaring turn-offs or pet peeves. I can't really put my finger on it.

It was a bit too wordy? Too descriptive? It's a longish book too. For me anyways. I skimmed some of the extra details. Describing things. The internal monologues about songs.

And I guess I didn't 100% get Sage and Antonio's connection. They'd never met. Yet when they do they have this strong desire for each other and this deep connection. I'm just not sure where it came from? What it was based on other than Marco? And things quickly moved in to love.

I did like some of the music aspects. And despite not getting (or loving) Shiloh in this one, I am curious about his story. And to see how he finds love. And who he finds love with.

It seems like I didn't like it. I did, I just didn't LOVE it. Recommended for fans of Edie Danford though. And I will be reading book 2.

I liked this story even though I wasn't a fan of the writing style. There's something about it that felt off and it really bothered me at the beginning.

I really liked both main characters, right from the start. The story was on the slower side, which I think worked well here, but I do feel that their feelings for each other came a bit too soon. Although there was a special bond between them, they didn't know each other that well. Aside from that minor niggle, their story was really sweet and the epilogue was lovely.

Slow start, but got there eventually. I loved the feelz, and teared up a time or two.

I won't be reading the second book because Shiloh worked my last nerve and was all about the drama. Not my jam for an MC.

That had one of the most gorgeous Epilogues I think I've ever read.

I'm pretty sure this was my first book by Edie and I have to say that it was a complete pleasure.

Her writing style flows and ebbs through beautifully constructed visual imagery and dialogue which connects the reader to the characters perfectly.

There's a lot of talent needed to do that with a character who has to use a phone's reading app to articulate his words because of a damaged throat but I totally got into Sage's head in this book.

Antonio was a harder nut to crack but he also worked his way into my affections and I utterly adored the uniquely drawn and gifted bunch of family and friends which surround them.

There's some angst but overall this really was just a gorgeous romance between two people connected through a life sacrificed.

Una historia muy dulce, llena de romanticismo. Es slow burn, muy bien hecho, pero quizás es un poco repentino su enamoramiento.

Second Song was a such a heartwarming second chance love story. This was a hurt-comfort read.
I felt like this story was made to make us thinking, how life is so fragile and we need to embrace it with an open arms.
Edie Danford is a new to me author and I will definitely read the next book from this series.

Only sometimes do you read a book and a piece of it gets in and it becomes the book for you. Second Song hit all the most perfect notes for me and I liked everything about it.

We meet up with Sage four years after an attack claimed everything but his life. His voice will never sing again and his body will never be the same as it was and it’s been a long journey for him. He has his family and his best friend, Shiloh, and the two of them are starting a new adventure. Although, it might not be exactly what everyone thinks it is. Sage has been completely out of the spotlight as he recovered and while he moves forward, his heart is heavy.

The book is poignant, and lyrical, and melancholy, and hopeful, with a strong atmosphere of Sage’s life in Vermont. The relationship between the men is sparked so high right from the beginning, but it’s a slow burn, and an aching story of true love. The title becomes clear right from the start and that only adds to the complete picture. Marco is not seen on page, but his presence resonates and echoes with those left behind and a lot of choices are made in honor of his memory, so he will never be forgotten.

That was a dose of wonderful and fluffy escapism. Just enough sweet romance to keep my teeth from rotting and practically no melodramatic angst to annoy me. Wonderful writing, wonderful characters and overall a nice story. Don't expect any suprises or any plot beyond what the blurb describes and you'll have a good time with this.

This was such a lovely romance between a scarred musician and his former bodyguard's brother. It does deal with some heavy topics, grief being the biggest, but overall, this was a beautiful story of hope and healing and love.

Following the traumatic events that rocked Sage and Antonio's lives forever, each man carried a heavy fog of grief and guilt that they had learned to tolerate as their new reality. Their initial connection may have been formed by their mutual survivor's guilt, but the love, trust, and forgiveness they found in each other was beautiful to watch as they evolved and healed.

This was not your typical rock star romance. It was a sweet, tender, and moving story that I found refreshing in a genre full of wonton sex and drugs. The lyrical prose and perfect pacing made for a lovely slow burn. Also worth noting, this book was like a love song written for Vermont and the vivid descriptions gave me such a great sense of place. Edie Danford's writing style was thoughtful and expressive and I've happily added her entire backlist to my to-be-read pile.

I loved the anology between life and a song album: “𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒊𝒈𝒈𝒆𝒓. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈? 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒂𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 . 𝑴𝒂𝒚𝒃𝒆 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈.”

Sage has had a horrible song as the first on his life's album. But now, although broken in body,he wants to see if he might have better luck with the second one.

I found it amazing that his second chace is alongside Antonio, the brother of the man who died protecting Gage. It was touching to see these two men together, their connection, the tenderness between them. The hotness, also, despite the physical difficulties.

𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐠 by Edie Danford is a really emotional book. Endearing characters, sweet romance and a great sense of family, all making the story a definite must read.

This was an emotional slow burn romance that really grabbed me. Sage and Antonio were well-written complex characters, both having to deal with a personal loss. I enjoyed going along with them on their journey as they discover the connection between them. A great series opener that has me looking forward to reading more in this series.

Second Song by Edie Danford is the first book in the Sugarhouse Blues series and tells the lovestory of Sage and Antonio. These two men are beautiful together... sweet and sexy with a love that can heal their hurting souls. This story has drama, angst, sweetness and heat.... the characters are interesting and make you care. I cant wait to read the next book in the series.

Sweet, whimsical, poetic. This was such a warm lazy read where the writing was implacable and lures you in. It’s not what I expected from rockstar-bodyguard troop but I’m glad it was different, the soft edge of the book was just working for me.

Sage and Antonio were perfect for each other, and I was worried that things with Marco would’ve made it hard for them to bond but it actually made them closer. I really wanted for Sage to talk about his guilt with Antonio and for them to really rehash what happened, but I wasn’t disappointed when they didn’t to; it wasn’t completely unreasonable since the incident was over 4 years ago.

The only thing I would change in the book was the pace. Around maybe 60% it was getting tooo soft that I was tad bored and I kind of wished for a flare. I loved that everyone was reasonable in their actions, human, well flesh out, but I also wanted some drama to pick it up a little.

I really liked the characters but god this was a slow story, especially considering how quickly feelings developed between the two main characters.

I think the character of Sage was INCREDIBLY special. Even though the book is not for me, I will remember him.

I felt the writing style was a bit off, not for me, but I’m clearly in the minority with this.

By 70% I was skimming because I was bored, and no longer cared what was happening enough to read it properly. Beautiful epilogue, though.

One sentence I never ever want to read again, though:

We’re sticky with jizz, and my heart is sticky with emotions.

Good god.

4.25 stars for this one. I've read a few Edie Danford stories now, and whilst I like her prose, her reads always come across as a little wordy and sometimes fairly slow...this was another of those reads. Having said that, I did like all of the characters, the kids were OK in small doses, and I was happy that Sage got his HEA after suffering a dreadful, near fatal attack during his music career first time around. Antonio was exactly what he needed and deserved.

I will read Shiloh's story, whenever that makes an appearance.

3.5 but I am rounding up because this was a beautifully written book, a little long for my liking but overall I enjoyed Antonio and Sage finding love with each other. They shared a loss without having met each other and I think in their shared grief found comfort. The “baby” and “honey” nicknames were cute af, and the first time scene was well written. I liked the moments Antonio and Sage shared with each other but there was something missing for me that I can’t quite figure out.

Written as if this whole story were a song, the story is very beautifully framed and sometimes motivations are slightly obscured in the prose. But what comes through is love, all kinds of love, and that carries the stories, the men, the families that share an incredible connection.

There were quite a few times that I felt like I could skim because it was taking a really long time to say certain things, to do something, or to actually get somewhere. It was a very, very slow-burn romance. At first I felt a little annoyed by that, but I think the time between their real-life connection and their re-connection with romantic intent was necessary. Kind of an 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' thing. But even then things weren't really emotionally smooth sailing. It wasn't until nearly the end when Antonio has a forced heart-to-heart with his sister-in-law that he finally jumps in with Sage with both feet and no reservations. I didn't see the reason for his fear and hesitation before that point and while I think it fit and made sense, it was a bit out of left field and seemed a little forced when I think Antonio just needed to stop making romantic decisions for Sage and for them without Sage.

Except when we get to the epilogue I'm completely won over. It was so sweet and pretty much perfection for the couple and the entire family.

I'm not opposed to a whole lot of family involvement in a story, especially one like this where without them both men's situation and hearts necessitate their family support. Did it need every interaction with the kids? Probably not, but it made Sage and Antonio a little softer for me and I liked it. It definitely added to the length of the story though as well as depth to all their complications both on their own and together.

This was a long read for me and I enjoyed quite a lot of it. The themes and feels made it worth reading and I wouldn't be opposed to getting Shiloh's story because I'm wondering just what kind of person will be the perfect foil to all his glittery, jittery hardness and vulnerability.

Dreams can change!

Achieving one’s dream is a remarkable feat, not everyone can do that! You are set apart if you are able to achieve yours. But life can be cruel sometimes, or rather, people can be downright cruel, jealous and selfish sometimes too.

This story begins with a sad premise, that of a tragic event that happened during Sage’s and his band’s tour which resulted in the death of someone very dear to him and something lasting for Sage too.

The way Sage’s thinks gives me life, he sees the beauty in the people and nature that surrounds him. As a singer and composer, he thinks of what he sees as poetry! He thinks in poetry.

Antonio feels deeply for what happened to Sage and Marco, and he feels privileged that Sage reached out to him in this most important undertaking he is embarking on after the tragedy.

The story is beautiful! It is like poetry, especially from Sage’s point of view. I love how positive Antonio tries to be especially when it comes to Sage, but he is always beseiged with what he thinks are his responsibilities. But I love how the story was told. It is slow burn but really sweet, and the characters are endearing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Second Song was a really lovely book that I spent hours being sucked into, as in I was up until 3 am because I couldn’t put it down. The characters were great and I loved Sage but I wasn’t crazy about his friend Shiloh at times. That may change if he appears again, so we’ll see.

Sage was different than I thought he would be, sweeter and stronger and not as broken as I had thought. I had gone into this book expecting a bitter brat but that is the opposite of who Sage was.

Antonio was a great character, he was strong and protective and attentive but not a pushover and he wasn’t a prick like some of the “bodyguard” type of characters I have read in the past.

Edie Danford is a new author for me and I am so glad I gave this writer a chance. The writing was smooth and the music lyrics when we got them were melodic. The whole “Rocker and Bodyguard” trope is one of my favorites and this one really hit the spot.

★★ TWO STARS

This is a new-to-me author and the blurb sounded promising. However, I struggled to get through this book. There were some parts that were confusing or just didn't make any sense to me. Other parts that read like a jumble of thoughts and ideas and not really a well organized storyline.

The characters had zero chemistry and passion. Everything just fell flat and I couldn't connect with the characters. I liked the concept of the book but the delivery fell short. I feel like a lot of the back story was missing so I really didn't get any of the feels or emotions that could come from such a tragic incident.

The characters were okay. Sage and Antonio were both sweet but not much character development and I found them a tad boring. I don't know this may be someone else's cup of tea but this book just didn't do it for me.
