What if grandma made a deal with the Grimm Reaper? To kill one person to get another year of life?! Phyllis did and it's hilarious! A fun ride while you watch someone die. 4 or 5 stars, the reviews all say it is full of dark humor & My God is Grimm a sarcastic creature. It is a short story, folks. JUST 50 SOME PAGES. Read it with the understanding that it is a funny take on Grimm. Not a romance at all! LOL. Please Enjoy. OH, if you can, leave a review. I would love that to DEATH! I'm gonna drink tea now!

A fun rolling story way different from my usual reads as a needed break from far too serious novels. If I had a complaint about it...would be that I wanted it longer as it ends too soon. Please keep these goofy ideas rolling for more stories!" - R.A., AmazonAngela Hayes4.0 out of 5 stars A really fun read!Reviewed in Australia on November 3, 2019Verified Purchase"This was such a quirky, fun read! I loved this interesting and original take on the Grimm Reaper mythology and beliefs. It is clever and very creative. If you have ever wondered if you could make a ‘deal’ with death- Grimm & Gram by Shay Mills does just that.Meet Phyllis (Gram), who is 80 and living in a retirement community. Her arthritis acts up and she has all the aches and pains associated with her age- but her mind is as sharp as a tack. When death arrives to claim her, Phyllis is a little shocked to say the least- but she must make an impression on Grimm, as he offers her a ‘deal’. For every ‘soul’ she delivers to him, he will extend her life for a year. A life, for a life. Now Phyllis is taken aback- this can’t be real- she must be going crazy. But given the thought of dying, or taking a life- she decides she will have to get creative. So with her mind made up, Gram, the serial killer, is born. What ensues makes for really great reading. It’s a funny ‘black comedy’- with a fun, interesting, cynical, slightly gruesome, and entirely captivating storyline. I found it to be a great mix of sweet and sour- with a dash of serial killer creepiness thrown in for good measure. Mr. Mills delivers a great, macabre comedy. There I also a bit of a moral/lesson to be learned in the end.The only minor issue for me was that the story did feel a little rushed towards the end but this didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story.Looking forward to more from Mr. Mills!Thank you, Mr. Mills!"Angela Hayes4.0 out of 5 stars A really fun read!Reviewed in Australia on November 3, 2019Verified Purchase4 StarsSynopsisDoes reality exist beyond the dimension we know? A unique serial killer tale with an OAP as the unlikely villain. The first half was a little slow with too much emphasis on the build-up and the main character dealing with her conscience. The second half felt rushed with each death, there could have been more detail added. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this and some of me was thinking the old lady had just lost the plot until later on in the story when others close to death can also see him. A well written enjoyable read and I will also look at what else this author has churned out.
In Shay Mills' GRIMM & GRAM, a kindly grandmother makes a deal with Death in order to spare her own life. For each person Gram murders, Death will add another year to her life. This bargain is the beginning of a Gram killing spree in which she attempts to mirror DEXTER, her favorite TV show, by murdering only disagreeable people. Unfortunately for Gram, her grandson Timothy is a police detective who (after some prodding) becomes suspicious.
Although the story is entertaining, Mills's writing could use some polish. Passive voice pervades the text, which is to say that there's far more "tell" than "show" here. More often than not, Mills tells us who each character is instead of allowing the reader to infer who they are through their actions. When combined with the relative passivity of the sentence structures, it is too easy for the reader to exit the author's world. For example, the sentence "Phyllis gave a look to her as if she was dumb" could pack more punch written as "Phyllis looked at her incredulously. 'Are you stupid?' she wondered aloud."
Throughout the story, I found myself rewriting bits and pieces for the author, which pulled me out of what is otherwise an entertaining idea for a horror short.
Serial killer grandma! The grimm reaper offers granny a deal, kill someone and earn an extra year. Being a pretty upbeat grandma, she starts to go Dexter and gets a little out of hand. Great quick winter read.

This was one of those times where you should not judge a book by its cover. This cover was kind of cheesy in my opinion and a bit off putting. But, it’s what’s inside the cover that makes all the difference. I was pleasantly surprised and quite enjoyed this little read. I’ve never read anything by this author before but will definitely check out one of his other books to see how it goes. Imagine if you will - Granny meets the Grim Reaper and is given an opportunity to prolong her life. With each life she takes and soul she give the Grim Reaper, Granny adds one year to her life. Well, say no more to this psychopathic Granny - she’s ready to start adding the years one life at a time and in short order as well. I thought it was an interesting concept and was told in a way that made perfect sense. A quick, fun read with some humorous and some disturbing bits. Well worth the approximately 90 minutes it took to read.

A completely different twist on serial killers with a conscience. Grimm & Gram will entertain you until the very end. A slightly cynical view on life, death, and what it means to be alive. Enjoy the read.

‘Grimm & Gram,’ is the first book that I read from Shay Mills and if his other books are written in the same mannerism, we have ourselves a modern-day Alfred Hitchcock. ‘Grimm & Gram,’ is a wonderfully crafted suspense story about how thoughts of our eventual demise arouses feelings of anxiety that influence significant aspects of our lives and motives many of our actions. What would you do to live an extra year? Phyllis, an eighty- year old grandmother is visited one day by the Grimm Reaper. Petrified with the thought of living only 24 hours, Phyllis strikes a deal with the devil/Grimm Reaper in exchange for one more year.
Kudos to Shay Mills for this very imaginative and clever novella. Even more so because the protagonist is a granny - with plenty of spunk! I found myself getting drawn into the wild story to see how far it could go (extremely far), and how the author would find a way out of the twisted plot he created. The story didn’t disappoint. It was an incredibly entertaining and unique tale that somehow managed to be funny despite its chilling theme. Highly recommended!
I was excited to read a book with an unconventional lead, so Phyllis was a lovely breath of fresh air. At least, at first. I am not sure why, but I expected a grand adventure of helping people, not a self-serving antihero. The writing was average, and there wasn't much tension in the final chase.

When the Grim Reaper comes knocking most people encounter the stages of grief, but what if it was death who offered a bargain? For each life she takes Grimm is willing to extend Phyllis' time for another year. What is an 80-year-old Gran to do? There are so many people whose presence should be scrubbed, so many. Should she embrace death, or become death's embrace?
Grimm and Gran: Would you like some tea with death, is a fun and entertaining tale by Shay Mills. Its length makes it the perfect size to read in one sitting, and the development ensures you'll want to see how things progress. I liked Phyllis' character, a sweet gran like those everyone knows and loves, but when tempted, she is only human. Short and sweet, this tale shows a vivid transformation and an interesting and alternative take on the origin of some serial killers and makes for an enjoyable read.
This story may be short, but it shows how easily some are corrupted. As the final sentence in the work says, it's our decisions that face our future, and that was true of the main character.
The story could have gone one of two ways, but the one author selected was an interesting one.
The work will be dated due to a couple of pop culture and contemporary events references, but it was also interesting how the author tweaked the grim reaper mythos in minor but noticeable ways.
This is a very interesting short story about spirituality as 80 year old Phyllis faces her last days. She's strong and is not ready to die. She makes a deal with the Grimm Reaper who only she can see, but does she agree with him and will she do as he asks if she wants to extend her life one more year? Interesting and captivating story to read. And... being almost 80 myself, I'm not ever going to let the Grimm Reaper into my life!
Although the story is definitely warped, it is written with style and whimsy. It reminds me of a Ray Bradbury novella. Just enough creepy to make it fun, but not so much you can not get over it. Seriously, do not miss this one and why should you, because right now it is free on Kindle Unlimited! Perfect read for Halloween!
