Talking to Bede

Rate this book
Bede was born in north-east England about 672, and spent nearly all his life in the monastery at Jarrow, devoting himself to the study of the Scriptures.

What could we find to say to Bede? What could he say to us? We have in common the natural world, and can start from that: the Terra Firma for which the astronaut and the dead may feel homesick, the planet which we now know is not at the centre of the universe, the home which is still a paradise and which we may destroy.

For the benefit of eavesdroppers on this conversation, there are notes about the people and places mentioned, and a select chronology of the Dark Ages in Northumbria.

A small and charming book of poetry, stumbled upon entirely by accident in the university library.
