Brian, Spike, Beth and Sarah face their biggest challenge yet. Their journey so far has been fraught with peril. Can they do what it takes to keep their community from being overtaken by the Alliance? Their choices are Stay and fight or abandon the compound and run. If they run, the Alliance will track them down. Staying they will face an enemy that outnumbers and outguns them. All the odds are against them... And time is running out.
SO much going on in this one. Maybe too much? We've got wars, literally, on multiple fronts. We bounce from scene to scene, and character to character as we frantically follow along. It became a little frenzied at times. It's okay to allow your characters some down-time. Those are the moments when readers can really connect with them.
There is loss of life all around, which is normal in a genre such as this. I saw a complaint about that from another reviewer. I'm not complaining about such losses, though those were heartbreaking. In this type of world it IS normal to suffer such loss.
We pick up where we left off in book 2. This time with Beth kidnapped, and no one realizing it, due to the war zone the compound became. Fortunately, Beth is a fighter and, eventually, Brian finds out and immediately follows. We get to see our other favorite characters Sarah, Spike, and Peckerhead. We also get to meet some new ones who take up the fight. Hold on to your hearts though, and grab some tissues. You'll definitely need them.
This was very well written, and the storyline was packed full of action, BUT, I'm seeing more and more authors following the same formula. As a result those begin to blend together. I'd like to encourage this author to find her own balance, and not give in the formulaic layout A LOT of authors are coming to repeat.
I'm looking forward to more from NB. As a new writer she's surprised me with her skill and I can't wait to read her next one.
This one is a bit of a letdown after the first two books. The soul searching and ruminating quickly becomes repetitious and the book could be half the number of pages if it was stripped during editing. How many times does a character have to say, "Woe is me! But I must move forward!"
An important rule of writing is broken many times in this edition: Show, don't tell. Instead of showing us how frustrated a character is, we are told, "She was so frustrated." Instead of showing us how worried a character may be we are told, "He was so worried." Over and over.
The first two books set high expectations, and this one just didn't deliver. The action is there, the characters are there, but it is simply weighed down by too much introspection and brooding. Hopefully the next book will return to the great writing that I know Broadley is capable of.
I'm not even going to mention that audacious death of a main character. I'm still in mourning.
The book over all is a good read. Fast pace action storyline. New friends arrive and old ones are loss. I am not sure I like the choices for being killed off. But when you get invested in the characters it is hard especially when they are a main character. But I am not the author, there is just a lot of bodies dropping in this book. Took me a long time to finish it. Maybe it’s just me, how much heartbreak does a book need?
Buckle your seatbelt , hang onto your hat, and prepare to race to the end. N.A. Broadley's 3rd book and thrilling conclusion to her Apocalypse Trail series joins the characters you know and love into the biggest confrontation yet. Well-written with characters that quickly lodge themselves deep in your heart...you don't want to miss out!
Believe me if l could give these books a ten star rating l would, there is so much l could say, love the characters and the story line.you will laugh ,you will cry.it is so heart breaking and the surviving that these people go threw is miraculous.l just hope this isn't the end of them.this writer is amazing. Read you won't be sorry.
Spoiler alert: You’ve killed off so many people. Main characters. The leaders of the group. I could handle that but then you killed little Stephen and Sara. Sara of all people! She’d survived so much. Her character deserved better than that. So I’ve stopped reading.
Spoiler Alert. I have difficulty with any book that kills off favorite characters. I lost too many friends that I made from books 1 and 2 in this series. The writing is excellent, the storyline concise, and the character development is so complete, I could not let them go and the author cruelly took them away from me, hence the three stars back lash.

With the odds against them Beth, Brian, Sarah and Spike continue there fight for life. Nancy delivers a story that will make you cry and will frustrate you all while entertaining you.
Highly recommend you read this series! Very good, gritty and emotionally sad. Hoping for a fourth book. Would like for Spike to find peace and happiness.
Unlike most in this genre, Nancy tells the story from both a woman and man's perspective. She nuances you in with every turn of the page. Her writing has improved since book 1 by leaps and bounds. Keep them coming NA Broadley, I'll keep reading them.
I love the great characters that were created for the story. The story sizzles with pathos, humor, hardship, evil and love. So many die but survivors move forward. I want another chapter in this remarkable saga!
You certainly get a glimpse of violence that I hope and pray we'll never witness. The hero set of characters are wonderful and sometimes we get a chance to wonder what part nurture and environment play in forming one's response to outside events. There is loss of life on both sides if this fight.
Nancy you have outdone yourself. Such a great story, strong characters. Made my heart thump. So looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
