Carl Engel has left his private investigation business behind him and is lying low on a tropical island. He has been living on the beach with Nadia, a Russian woman he knows nothing about, and when she's found dead, it's unclear whether it was his past that killed her or her own. Meanwhile, the police think Carl did it and have no interest in looking for other suspects. Carl returns to Bangkok under a cloud of suspicion with his loyal sidekick George, and his investigation takes him from Bangkok’s seedy bars and clubs to Vienna, Bratislava, and Belgrade.
Harlan Wolff has lived in Thailand since 1977 and before becoming a writer was a successful Private Investigator and corporate troubleshooter specialising in major crime. The Carl Engel series is a gritty and real account of a Bangkok based PI’s milieu.

If you are a fan of gritty PI stories then this is one that should be on your must read list. If you're not a fan, then this book just may change that for you if you like mature audience real life crime fiction. This story, and in particular the main character, Carl Engle, grabbed my interest and I followed him into a world of intrigue, mystery, and foreign affairs that kept me wanting to know more. Good story with an ending I can honestly say I didn't see coming.
Not an easy read. Complicated, confusing scenario. Jumps around to different internal stories and hard to follow overall theme of book. Too many characters to keep track off. Not one of my best good reads. A bit of a headache from reading this. Farewell paradise, I will not be back to read this author again!
Really enjoyed the first book, was really happy to find a sequel. Another really good story, with some great characters. Hope Harlen Wolff will write another, I’ve read both stories numerous times.
An enjoyable sequel to Bangkok Rules. A well-paced story with a quick -thinking protagonist, Carl Engel once again finds himself in a world of trouble. With help from his friends and the luxury of a large bankroll, Carl is able to bring his girlfriend's killers to justice. A representative noir detective tale worth reading to readers of the genre. I enjoyed the quotes that introduced each chapter. I would recommend a better editor and proofreader to catch the occasional missing quotation mark and grammatical errors.
It's rare that a novel grips but this novel is one such rarity. It's one of those books that you will read in a single session. Fast paced and laced with local knowledge. Write some more soon!!!
A ripping good tale of crime, murder and good detective work set against the backdrop of the underbelly of Thailand, from a man who knows it well. Great plot, characters, and local color.
I do like your style Sir. Cards loosely held close to your chest as you deftly played the winning hand over and over again, all my awe and gratitude.. C. F.
