I loved Dirk Van Loon's book "The Family Cow," so I decided to check out another one of his books, "Small-Scale Pig Raising." Sadly, I did not find it as wonderful as the bovine book. Van Loon made cows seem so simple and in this book he makes simple pig raising appear so....complex. Also, this book seemed very dated. There are better pig books out there. Go find one.
This is the best hog rearing book I've come across. Contains a wealth of information on raising pigs "the old fashioned way" ie. pasture. This method of raising pigs is a lost art form. Highly recommend for anyone seeking info on natural hog production.
A bit outdated, but I knew that going in - this mostly affects the cost analysis. Loved the chapter on the history of pigs, also really great info for someone considering raising one or two pigs.
excellent practical handbook, written when Dirk was a young man and fastidious about his facts. He may even be dead now! a long time rural life advocate in Nova Scotia/maritime Canada
