In 2016, I took a detour on the way from Montreal to Boston... a 220 mile detour that took me to Derry Bangor, Maine, for a Stephen King pilgrimage. The main purpose and highlight of this short trip was taking a tour with Stu of SK Tours of Maine, which you can read about here.
Years later, I saw that Stu has collected all the Stephen King-related Bangor sights into a small paperback, and I wanted to support him during the pandemic, so I ordered it. It's exactly what you would expect: A list of all the Stephen King sights in town, complete with pictures and comments. As far as I recall, their order is also the one Stu follows on the tour, although there were some minor sights he didn't take us to, either because they aren't that significant, or because they were a ways outside of Bangor.
The booklet seems like a bit of a rushed or DIY job—the pictures are serviceable, but not that great, seemingly all taken on overcast days. There were typos, and for some reason Stu's bits are in quotes. It's nothing I'll look at often or to write home about, but I'm glad I did my small part in supporting Stu during hard times. I remember the hours we spent together all these years ago vividly, and while this book is in no way a substitute for an actual tour with Stu, it does include all the relevant stops, so you could use it to make up your own self-guided itinerary. It was a nice way to relieve that day, one of my fondest memories from that particular trip, and I didn't expect more than a nice memento.
Does this little book really deserve five stars? Depends on how you rate. I was thrilled to receive it because it came with my reservation for a private SK Tour for my 50th birthday. I feel as if I've waited my whole life for this tour (38 years, anyway) and am so excited to take it I can barely wait. So, in short, this little book gets all the stars I can give. However...
While this is clearly a passion project, there were a lot of typos. With just a little more care or one more pass by another set of eyes, this could have been a little better. Otherwise, I loved it! Even the photos, which are mostly taken by a non-professional photographer show just how much the writer loves Stephen King. It was sweet to think of this superfan walking around snapping shots for this book.
