The victim, found shot to death on a public stairway, is a recently paroled prison inmate. Is it a deliberate act of vengeance, and does it mean the killer will be looking for more victims? Detectives Jilly Garvey and Dan Lee are put on the case; but their colleague Leon Simpkins, who has taken an unexpected interest, seems to find it all striking uncomfortably close to home. Before they can solve the crime, the three will have to uncover deep secrets, with a profound effect on almost everyone involved.
The 8th volume in Tony's series may be the best one yet. His ability to spin a good yarn grows more sure-handed with each succeeding book. The pool of main characters he draws from rotates from book to book, so we slowly get more familiar with this group of cops, with new people worked in. The solution isn't telegraphed to the reader, and though one might guess it, it won't be because of sloppy story construction. A very pleasant series that continues to get more fun to explore with each book.
