Great to have a collection of short works by Dan Abnett, the master of 40k and the black library. As a fan, i had come across quite a few of these in previous omnibuses and collections, but there were a great deal i hadnt read. A mix of longer form and ultra short, it was also a pleasant surprise to find some tales concerning characters i hadnt heard from in a long time, such as Priad of Damocles squad. The Eisenhorn stories, both older and new, are a treat, as are the Ravenor ones. The Gaunts Ghosts stories, the ones set in the heresy, even just the ones concerning one-shot characters we never hear from again, this is a great collection that any 40k fan will enjoy, with some real classics alongside some, great, more modern works. Whether writing an epic novel or a two page short story, Abnett is, as always, at his best.

My first foray into the warhammer universe. As such I had a hard time figuring out what was what for a while. Once I accepted that I would just not understand the full breadth of everything happening in these little stories and just kept reading I really enjoyed it. It did a great job of giving me a brief glimpse of the a huge swaths of the universe and got me interested in reading more of his works.

Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection covers a gambit of Dan Abnett's characters! From Gaunt and his Ghosts, To Ravenor and Eisenhorn to Horus Aximand they are packed in here! Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection really stretches across time and space with the stories all taking place across the Warhammer 40k timeline! We dip through from Gaunt's earliest command of the troops of Tanith as he forges them in the Ghosts that they will become! We get to see Eisenhorn while he was recently starting out on his own! This gives us an insight into his past and shows many of the people he had known at that point! As as at the same time it shows us the start of what the character becomes! We get tales from the Hours Heresy as well that really show the conflict from both sides and what it is costing to everyone involved in it! This adds real gravitas to the characters which is somethings that can take people with surprise reading this as you see many of the characters debating whether they are on the right side! The character development is all up there on a page and neatly ties into the the actions of characters in later books! This neatly as well ties in with all the battles and action going on from the start of the book!

The three-dimensional nature of the characters, as well as at the same time all of the characters being distinctly different, makes for epic character scenes action scenes etc to always have more going on than you would expect! This makes for a great palimpsest of events and characters interactions that will keep you guessing and keep you on your toes! Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection stories all neatly interweave around the other books and tales out there but what you will find is that even though is it a short story collection universe changing events take place in them and/or covered from a different perspective than you would see in others books! This puts everything on an epic stage with events taking on feel of their own throughout! Humour runs throughout the book as well adding to the other tones of character conflicts, mysteries battlefields etc which works brilliantly Ravenor's gang of Thonius Kys, Kara Swole and Nayl's reaction to Eisenhorn knocking out a Dreadnought is hilarious and well as Macks and Drusher etc

Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection hopping around the timeline as well works brilliantly and is reminiscent of Conan, The Expanse etc as it uses this arrangement! This enables us to have an overview on the development of characters like Gaunt and his Ghost, Ravenor etc while at the same time tying in perfectly with the other books of these characters and leaving thing open ended for future books! Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection stories really fill in the gaps of the characters covering points not necessarily covered in other works and really expanding on those gaps in the various characters past! This also again shows how well travelled they all are as well as adding in easter eggs tying things into other events neatly placing the stories in between them!

The time travel aspect of Oll, Katt, Graft, Zybes and the gang of time travellers also serves to show how the things developed in the universe they inhabit while at the same time setting up little nuggets as to how things developed in 40k! Oll's illusions to the Argonauts and sirens is cleverly thrown in and adds brilliant depth! Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection is also full of stand alone and characters origin tales to boot so we see the teaming up of Biologist Valentin Drusher and Magistratum Marshall Germaine Macks which works brilliantly as team and packed with rib breaking humour, the origins of Good Eye covered in Ork gunk, the origins of Sergeant Paw, the Nightsister Miriael and her assistant Lown Tegget and the Iron Snakes in action with Priad of Damocles gets promoted, hunt Orks etc making for an epic book that really shows a gambit of characters and stories!

Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection never lets up from the start! It is full of gripping stories that have a really feel to them and put you right in there with the characters! You get to see sides of the conflicts in there and things develop! At the same time along with more established characters and new ones you are kept guessing as to how each of the stories will work out and creates a great overview of these characters! It is book that works on all levels whether you know the Warhammer Universe or not and it is a great overview characters and events but at the same time full of meaty goodies and easter eggs all over the place!

Lord of the Dark Millennium: The Dan Abnett Collection never lets up from the start, keeping you on your toes guessing as to the outcome of stories, full of characters who are self aware, daring do, epic battles, cunning opponents, civil war, world building, mysteries, world building, adventure and action!

A great collection of Dan Abnett's 40k short stories. Highly recommended for the connecting stories that take place between his main series books. Abnett is one of the few writers to take the time to explain the day-to-day lives in the 41st millennium.

Plus, "The Fall of Malvolion" is one of my favorite stories in the 40k universe. Tyranids never get that kind of love.

Dan Abnett is by far my favourite Black Library author. I thought I might have read the vast majority of the stories in here, but I hadn't. There were still plenty of surprises, and also stories I've read over the years and just forgotten.

Most of the stories are tie-ins to Abnett's major series; the Horus Heresy, Eisenhorn/Ravenor and Gaunt's Ghosts. As such, this book might not make a good entry point for those. On the other hand, the Iron Snakes stories stand alone quite well, and that chapter deserves way more attention than it gets.

Classic Dan Abnett

I had read a few of these stories before. But not many, and I don't mind reading them again. I love Dan's descriptive writing style, and his action sequences leave me breathless at times! Really enjoyed this, and had a pang of regret when I realized I'd got to the last one!
