Few writers have known Italy better than Stendhal: he was only seventeen when he first rode south across the Alps in the wake of Napoleon's armies, and he continued to travel and to live in Italy until a few months before his death. Some of his visits lasted only a few weeks, others continued for years, and he spent the last decade of his life as French Consul in Civitavecchia – yet he was never a tourist in the ordinary sense of the word. Italy, for Stendhal, was never a mere treasure trove of ruins, museums and galleries: it was the life of the country which fascinated him, its spirit, the inner workings of its heart and mind. This picture – or rather this living dream – of Italy he created is as fresh and tantalizing today as it was almost two centuries ago.

About the author

Marie-Henri Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal, was a 19th-century French writer. Known for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology, he is considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism in his two novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839).

Rome, Naples and Florence is a masterpiece. It's possibly the best introduction into Stendhal's work and way of thinking that one can imagine, and it's possible to continue exploring Stendhal either with his fiction, or with his critical works on music and other arts.

Half of the book, contrary to what the title says, is dedicated to Milan; and you might be disappointed with the fact that Rome, for example, is described in less detail. But don't consider it to be a tourist guide. While I surely recommend this to anyone who visits Italy, it goes into more depth with the character of Italy and its people, and with the Napoleonic Wars-time history of the country, than with actual descriptions of the sights that Stendahl sees.

I cannot find this book in English or Russian, so I will leave the review here, and will transfer it to a more appropriate edition when possible.

The book consists merely of local political and amorous gossips of that time, occasionally interrupted by philosophical discourses on social, spiritual and cultural issues.

Nu poți învinovăți o emblemă a literaturii precum e Stendhal pentru faptul că, în opinia ta, anumite pagini sunt monotone sau prea detaliate. Nu suntem nici măcar în poziția de a evalua lucrările sale în calitate de simpli cititori. De aceea, am ajuns la concluzia că poate nu am atins nivelul la care operele sale să mi se poată dezvălui complet, prin fiecare detaliu și fiecare descriere amănunțită.

Călătoria documentată este realizată într-un stil ce este necunoscut generației noastre, în mare pentru că îi lipsesc elementele turistice clasice ce domină lumea contemporană. Personajul se infiltrează în societatea italiană, încercând să afle cât mai multe despre acești oameni, despre cultura lor, viața mondenă, preocupări, stil de gândire.
Ceea ce m-a impresionat cel mai mult a fost lejeritatea cu care descria activitățile zilnice care erau atât de diverse și poate neobișnuite. Orice emoție e observată din depărtare, bine analizată înainte de a fi pusă pe hârtie. Totul se întâmplă atât de obișnuit, maniera de a scrie fiind similară unei povești în care protagonistul nu iese din zona de confort, analizând propria-i lume interioară.
E ușor să te regăsești în scrierile protagonistului, pentru că emoțiile trăite de acesta sunt descrise cu sinceritate și simplitate.

„Dacă aș avea cât de cât cunoștințe meteorologice, n-aș mai afla atâta plăcere uneori în a privi cum aleargă norii și a mă bucura de palatele mărețe sau de monștrii enormi pe care îi înfățișează închipuirii mele.”

„Ce este eul? Nu știu. M-am trezit într-o zi pe pământul acesta; sunt legat de un corp, de un caracter, de o soartă. Să-mi trec vremea încercând în zadar să le schimb, uitând între timp să trăiesc? Tragere pe sfoară; deci mă supun defectelor…”
