Fyr

Rate this book
At seventeen, Toury arrives in Fyr, where magic is power, a prince’s love is deadly, and female autonomy is a dream. Formerly a loner and burden to her adoptive parents, she ruins her chances of a fresh start by offending an ogler who just happens to be the prince.

Alex, the Prince of Fyr, is no novice when it comes to pressure. He has to face his father’s ailing health, the expectation to marry soon, and the hidden necromancers trying to take over the realm by exploiting his dark curse. At least there’s hope in a cheeky savior, but Earth girls aren’t so easy.

Toury and Alex learn that the strongest magic cannot be conjured but must be earned. They must risk their lives, hearts, and futures to save the land from a darkness of apocalyptic proportions. But can they trust each other enough to save Fyr? Or will everything they hold dear turn to ash?

Toury has finally found her place in life, or has she? Transported into a magical realm, she discovers a heritage she never knew about, powers she never dreamed of possessing and blind hatred she never deserved. She also found her own prince, but his dark curse may forever stand between them, unless it can be broken by the greatest magic of all.

FYR by Lisa Borne Graves carries its own magic between the covers of this fantasy tale of love, discovery and a coming of age for one teen with a keen sense of self, independence and heart. Built in layers, each page opens up onto more…more depth of characters, more fascinating and richly detailed scenes and more of a plot that is as entangled as Medusa’s snakes!

Can Toury, an outsider from another realm be the answer Fyr is looking for to save their world, their prince and their very lives or has the darkness already become too much to best?

A touch of romance, a strong female, turmoil, deceit and the fluff of royal pageantry and rules make this one fabulous read from an author who knows how to use her gift of imagination! Highly recommended for a fantasy escape!

I received a complimentary copy from Lisa Borne Graves! This is my honest and voluntary review.

An addictive adventure filled with passion, sinister curses, and dark magic.

Darkness threatens to infiltrate the magical world of Fyr. When Prince Alexander thinks he's discovered their savior, she's far from what anyone expects, which makes for an interesting turn of events.

The mention of Earthly history made envisioning the world of Fyr much easier and I enjoyed the blending of eras in this new way. When Toury stepped into her new life on Fyr, I didn't want to put this book down. I had to know what was going to happen next. As the dust settled from one catastrophe, another one seemed to be waiting for our hero and heroine around the next corner. I truly felt for Alex and Toury, and I didn't want their story to end.

Fyr is a fun, enthralling read that is bound to keep you up all night as you repeat to yourself, "Just one more chapter."

When I first started reading I was too easily convinced that this book wouldn't be better than four stars at the most. In the initial chapters so many new fantasy elements are added so quickly it is hard to juggle the new facts and understand everything. At one point a dialogue is interrupted when one character speaks and then multiple descriptive paragraphs happen before the other character responds, which totally interrupted the flow of the scene.

But this writer has a very distinctive knack for world-building and character development that revisits everything with new layers of meaning and new connections to help the reader make sense of the whole thing. And this is a truly captivating love story with magical fantasy elements that really picks the reader up and pulls them along through a thrilling ride of magic stones, alternate dimensions (or in this case "spheres"), evil necromancers lurking just out of view, and a medieval society that is almost parallel to our own, with electric lights but all the baggage that comes with courtly notions of princes, honor, and duty. And the plot is slow-building, but the surprises come like cannon shots in the darkness, changing everything until the next surprise. I strongly recommend this book. But I should remind you, you have to read at least to the fifth chapter to give this book a chance of capturing you with its magic. I now have to look for the second book in the series.

I love this book!
Ever since reading C.L. Wilson, I've had a soft spot for fantasy romance. It's like reading something straight out of my teenage dreams.
Lisa's first installment of Fyr hits ALL the feels, but does it in an amazing world that I want to escape to.
Fyr takes place in another world, where magic abilities manifest based on the stone a family has. The protagonist, Toury, has a double inheritance and is the last light magic-user for the planet. Her love interest is none other than the prince, with his own set of problems including a dark curse that threatens to take over him. A curse only true love can lift. And as we all know, true love is just SO easy! (not).
I especially love how Lisa keeps the story rather clean. There is some intense kissing, and a few instances of suggestive thought, but the morals of the world dictate that Toury and Alex wait until they are married to have a more physical relationship. I love the message and example this sets for the teen audience the book is written for, and how Lisa makes it clear that marriage is not a happily ever after solution to everything a la Disney, but is rather a serious commitment that transcends love, affection, and attraction.
Since the story is a romance, it is a rather light read, perfect for a day at the beach or a rainy afternoon. There are some serious implications of the dark magic issue, including some physical assault that may be frightening or triggering for a sensitive reader. For me, however, as I read the book it didn't bother me. Lisa neatly handles the issue, and never fully resolves the consequences, giving us a taste of the challenges to come in future books in the series for our lovers.
I highly recommend this book!

In Fyr, by Lisa Borne Graves, the reader is swept away by the complex, passionate characters and their struggle to save their world and each other. One of the main characters, Toury, is transported to another sphere where life for women is oppressive. One can feel her frustration and heartache while she adapts to her new environment. Even her love interest, Prince Alex, seems to adhere to the outdated gender roles until Toury’s modern sensibility wins him over.

But, challenges to their love are not so easily overcome. The lovers face their own flaws and insecurities, disapproval of family and society, and dangerous people and circumstances-- not to mention necromancers who are plotting to bring about their ruin and destroy all good in the kingdom.

I enjoyed this magical, fast-paced, romantic read. Lisa Borne Graves never disappoints with creating conflicted lovers who win my heart.

I won a copy of this book in a competition and the blurb caught my attention, but I forgot about it for a few weeks. One day I was cleaning and found the book again and I'm so glad I did. What a great read. It's a light romance with a soft fantasy or fairytale-like feel to it. The romance doesn't get steamy except for some kissing, and is handled in a way that isn't sickly sweet or contrived.
The protagonist, Toury, finds herself transported to a magic world where she has powers and falls for a prince who is cursed. It's a tried and true recipe for a good book, and rather than fall into a flat story like so many titles do, it finds its own voice through relatable characters, interesting plot, and avoiding common cliches in the genre. A great read which has me marking Lisa Borne Graves as an author to watch.

Fyr

The idea of different spheres and the world building was done discreetly and so interwoven into the story that you don’t even realize the how’s and why’s are being explained.
The characters were likable enough, the plot interesting, and the alternate world interesting enough to keep the images turning.
I left off a star because I felt like some of the relationship with our characters went too fast and other parts seemed to stall. She immediately trusted him with secrets even after being told to not trust anyone and barely knowing him. This trust and sharing of information seemed rushed and unnatural. Later the spend lots of time dancing around their attraction to each other and the using the word ‘love’. This also seemed unnatural and intentional. Overall it was an enjoyable afternoon read.

The perfect book for the young adult reader who would enjoy a romantic fairytale-like fantasy, like this one, set in the magical world of Fyr. The heroine is a misfit teen, Tourmaline Hematite, who is teleported from Earth by a magic infused stone, secretly planted on her, that magically takes her to Fyr and the start of her life changing adventure. Falling in love with the enigmatic and cursed Prince Alex, uncovering her true heritage and embracing her new life, these all come with threats against her life and the royal kingdom. I loved reading this action packed romantic thriller. A very entertaining storyline with some delightful characters.

This book had me from the start. It is the perfect fantasy novel to pull you in and keep you reading. I simply could not put this book down and I am impatiently waiting lol for the continuation of this
story. I felt a connection to Toury and love her fire and passion. Your only regret will be going to bed at 1am because you keep saying just one more chapter and I can put it down.
