This study offered a range of career possibilities, which pleased his father, and required a longer course of study that gave Kafka time to take classes in German studies and art history. At the university, he joined a student club, named Lese- und Redehalle der Deutschen Studenten, which organized literary events, readings, and other activities. In the end of his first year of studies, he met Max Brod, a close friend of his throughout his life, together with the journalist Felix Weltsch, who also studied law. Kafka obtained the degree of doctor of law on 18 June 1906 and performed an obligatory year of unpaid service as law clerk for the civil and criminal courts.
Writing of Kafka attracted little attention before his death. During his lifetime, he published only a few short stories and never finished any of his novels except the very short "The Metamorphosis." Kafka wrote to Max Brod, his friend and literary executor: "Dearest Max, my last request: Everything I leave behind me ... in the way of diaries, manuscripts, letters (my own and others'), sketches, and so on, [is] to be burned unread." Brod told Kafka that he intended not to honor these wishes, but Kafka, so knowing, nevertheless consequently gave these directions specifically to Brod, who, so reasoning, overrode these wishes. Brod in fact oversaw the publication of most of work of Kafka in his possession; these works quickly began to attract attention and high critical regard.
Max Brod encountered significant difficulty in compiling notebooks of Kafka into any chronological order as Kafka started writing in the middle of notebooks, from the last towards the first, et cetera.
Kafka wrote all his published works in German except several letters in Czech to Milena Jesenská.

This, in my opinion, is a story about Kafka's "children". In most of his stories, it is himself or some version/transformation of himself that must confront a father figure or a powerful individual. Here we have a caricature of a parent, a reluctant bachelor, who is grumpy, authoritarian, and misanthrope to the point of ridicule, who becomes bound to nurse the most unlikely objects and subjects.
It all starts with Blumfeld's desire to have a dog, a thought that is quickly abandoned since he can bear neither the responsibility nor the mess that comes with a pet. The whole narrative has many slapstick, humoristic, farcical elements. It is an unfinished story that seems perfectly complete.
Blumfeld, an Elderly Bachelor (Blumfeld, ein älterer Junggeselle) Μπλούμφελντ, ένας ηλικιωμένος εργένης:
Αυτή πιστεύω πως είναι μια ιστορία για τα "παιδιά" του Kafka. Στις περισσότερες διηγήσεις του, είναι ο ίδιος ή κάποιες εκδοχές/ μεταμορφώσεις του εαυτού του που πρέπει να αναμετρηθούν με μια πατρική φιγούρα ή έναν φορέα εξουσίας. Εδώ έχουμε μια καρικατούρα γονέα, ενός απρόθυμου εργένη, που είναι στριμμένος, αυταρχικός και μισάνθρωπος σε σημείο γελοιότητας που βρίσκεται υποχρεωμένος να νταντεύει τα πιο απίθανα αντικείμενα και υποκείμενα.
Όλα ξεκινούν από την επιθυμία του Blumfeld να αποκτήσει έναν σκύλο, ώστε να έχει κάποια συντροφιά, μια σκέψη που γρήγορα ωστόσο εγκαταλείπει καθώς δεν μπορεί να υποφέρει ούτε τις ευθύνες αλλά ούτε και την ακαταστασία. Η όλη διήγηση έχει έναν σλάπστικ, φαρσικό χαρακτήρα, διαβάζεται ευχάριστα και ενώ παρέμεινε ημιτελής είναι κατά κάποιο τρόπο, πλήρης και ολοκληρωμένη.
Στις 9 Φεβρουαρίου 1915 ο Kafka γράφει στα ημερολόγιά του σχετικά με αυτήν την ιστορία:
"Χτες και σήμερα έγραψα λίγο. Ιστορία σκύλου. Τώρα διάβασα την αρχή. Είναι άσχημη και προκαλεί πονοκέφαλο. Είναι παρ' όλη της την αλήθεια κακή, σχολαστική, μηχανική ένα ψάρι που εξακολουθεί να αναπνέει για λίγο επάνω στην άμμο. Γράφω το Μπουβάρ και Πεκισέ (σσ. Bouvard et Pécuchet ημιτελές σατιρικό έργο του Gustave Flaubert) πολύ πρόωρα. Αν τα δύο στοιχεία - πιο έκδηλα στον Θερμαστή (σσ. Der Heizer γραμμένο από τον Kafka στα 1913 πρώτο κεφάλαιο της ημιτελούς Αμερικής) και στην Αποικία των τιμωρημένων (σσ. In der Strafkolonie, 1914) - δεν συνενωθούν, υπάρχει όμως προοπτική γι' αυτή τη συνένωση".
Το ότι θεωρεί πως η ιστορία είναι κακή, το προσπερνάω, ο Kafka ήταν ο τύπος του ανθρώπου που αν τύχαινε μια μέρα να μην τον δυσαρεστεί τίποτα θα έσπευδε να φορέσει στενά παπούτσια. Η διήγηση είναι υπέροχη και το χιουμοριστικό στοιχείο την κάνει ακόμα πιο ενδιαφέρουσα. Ποια είναι ωστόσο αυτά τα δύο στοιχεία από τα προηγούμενα έργα του που πρέπει να συνενωθούν και τα οποία δεν κατονομάζει;
Η προσωπική μου θεωρία αφορά την αντίθεση ανάμεσα στον ενήλικο και τον ανήλικο κόσμο. Αν το καλοσκεφτούμε η προσπάθεια ενός να υπερασπιστεί και να πείσει για το δίκαιο της υπόθεσής του, η έννοια της ενοχής που είναι αλληλένδετη με την έννοια της δικαιοσύνης, του καλού και του κακού, του σωστού και του λάθους είναι κάτι που αφορά τον ενήλικο κόσμο. Το παιδί μπορεί να έχει συναίσθηση και επίγνωση της αταξίας του, της κακής συμπεριφοράς ή του σφάλματός του αλλά ως ένα βαθμό έχει το ακαταλόγιστο, γιατί η συμπεριφορά του είναι κακή όταν έτσι την ορίζει κάποιος ενήλικας και δεν ορίζεται απαραιτήτως έτσι από το ίδιο το παιδί. Εκείνο μπορεί να ορίζει την πράξη του ως παιχνίδι ή μπορεί να μην είναι σε θέση ακόμα να ορίσει την πράξη του, λειτουργεί περισσότερο με το ένστικτο.
Διαφωτιστική σχετικά με τις απόψεις του συγγραφέα γύρω από αυτό το θέμα είναι και η καταγραφή της 8ης Οκτωβρίου 1916 στην οποία αναφέρει:
"Η εκπαίδευση ως συνωμοσία των μεγάλων. Τραβάμε μέσα στο δικό μας στενό σπίτι τα παιδιά που γλεντοκοπούν λεύτερα, με ισχυρισμούς που τους πιστεύουμε κι εμείς, αλλά όχι με την έννοια που παριστάνουμε ότι τους πιστεύουμε".
Μπορεί ο Blumfeld να μην αποκτά σκύλο αλλά την ησυχία του την χάνει παρ' όλα αυτά, όταν ένα βράδυ καθώς επιστρέφει στο σπίτι του ανακαλύπτει πως στο δωμάτιό του έχουν εγκατασταθεί δυο

بعضی کتابا هست که وقتی تمومشون میکنی قیافت یه علامت تعجب بزرگ میشه و با خودت میگی خب که چی؟ اصلا داستان چی بود؟ هدفش چی بود؟ قرار بود به چی برسه؟ چی رو میخواست به خواننده بفهمونه؟ نکنه واقعا یه مفهوم پنهان و خیلی خفن داشته که من درکش نکردم؟
این کتاب دقیقا از همونا بود و هنوزم نفهمیدم واقعا خب که چی!!!!!

على الرغم من أن القصة لم تذكر تقريبا كلمة زواج أو أبناء أو مشتقاتهما.. إلا أنني أراها واحدة من أفضل ما كتب في نقد الزواج..
أو على الأقل حسب تفسيري الشخصي و قناعاتي أراها جيدة
بلومفيلد -كما يقول العنوان- رجل عانس.. تبدأ القصة عندما يجد كرتين قفازتين في شقته.. الكرتان تظلان تتابعان بلومفيلد أينما حل.. هذا في نصف القصة الأول..
في النصف الثاني.. نجد بلومفيلد في عمله و يصف لنا تعامله مع اثنين من الموظفين المساعدين له..
بلومفيلد في الحقيقة لم يكن قراره بعدم الزواج لأنه يراه بلا فائدة.. بل بالعكس بلومفيلد يتمنى أن يكون له شريكا..
"كان بلومفيلد على استعداد أن يرحب أي رفيق.. فكر جديا في أن يقتني كلبا صغيرا.. فهذه الحيوانات تتمتع بالمرح و حافظة للجميل ووفية"
فبلومفيلد يعاني بالفعل من الوحدة.. و كعادة كل من يعاني منها فإنه يتجه للحيوانات الأليفة ..
لماذا لم يحاول بلومفيلد الزواج إذن؟؟
إنه لنفس السبب الذي جعله لم يقتن كلبا.. و لكن على نطاق أوسع!
"لكن الحقيقة أن الكلب لا يخلو من العيوب ..
ولو تمتع الكلب بحالة صحية جيدة فيوما ما سيصبح مسنا.. سيجد نفسه امام كلب شبه أعمى و ضعيف و غير قادر على الحركة.. سيدفع ثمنا باهظا مقابل ما أعطاه له الكلب من سعادة..."
هكذا في مونولوج طويل -يتخطي الصفحة- نجد بلومفيلد يعدد عيوب اقتناء كلب.. و سنجدها تقريبا نفس عيوب الزواج نفسها! فكافكا يرفض "شبه-الزواج هذا".. أو الاقتران بكلب يعيش معه حياته بسبب تلك المسئولية الباهظة التي سيتحملها.. فما بالنا بالزواج الحقيقي الذي تكون فيه المسئولية أضعافا مضاعفة؟!
ثم ظهرتا الكرتان أمام بلومفيلد.. و تصرفاتهما تماما مشابهة لتصرفات طفلين صغيرين.. فهما حرتا الحركة.. يتقافزان لأعلي و لأسفل محدثتان ضجيجا.. يظلان يتابعان بلومفيلد في كل مكان و يتسببان له في إزعاج.. حتى بالرغم من كونهما كرتان جميلتا الشكل .. إلا إنهما مزعجتان.. و لكن كعادة الأطفال بعد اللعب طويلا سيصيبهم الإجهاد في النهاية..
"مد بلومفيلد يديه في الهواء ليرى إن كانت هاتان الكرتان تتدليان من خيوط.. لم يكن الأمر كذلك.. إنهما تتحركان من تلقاء نفسيهما..
أراد أن يحبسهما في مكان ما لكنه رأي أن هذا الإجراء الذي اتخذه ضد هاتين الكرتين الصغيرتين غير لائق.. فمن الجميل أن يكون لديه كرتان مثلهما.. و سرعان ما سيصيبهما الإرهاق"
كيف يمكنك التخلص من إزعاج طفلين؟ ببساطة بوجود الشريك الآخر.. الزوجة.. فهى فقط لديها القوة الكافية أن تتحكم فيهما..
"ربما كان وجود كلب لديه مفيد في لحظة كهذه .. حيوان صغير و لطيف في استطاعته أن ينهي أمر هاتين الكرتين على الفور"
فإذا كان وجود الشريك متعثر.. فكيف يمكن القضاء على إزعاج تلك الأطفال؟ ببساطة ألق بهم وسط مجموعة أطفال آخرين سينشغلون جميعا في اللعب و سينسونك تماما!
"كان الصبي مازال يقف في الدهليز... قد يعطيهما بلومفيلد له .. سينضم إليه أطفال آخرين.. ستتحول الكرتان في النهاية و إلى الأبد إلى مجرد كرات للهو و ستتوقفان عن كونهما مرافقين لبلومفيلد"
في النصف الثاني من القصة .. ظهر المتدربان.. و كما قامت الكرتان بدور الأبناء في المنزل فالمتدربان قاما بدور الأبناء في العمل..
وككل الأبناء فالمتدربان كانا عابثين.. لا يمكن الاعتماد عليهما.. غير قادرين على التحرك باستقلالية.. و يحتاجان دائما إلى المكافأة لكي يقوما بأي عمل.. أو إلى العقاب بسبب الأخطاء المتكررة..
كافكا في هذه القصة قدم صورة شديدة السوادوية لفكرة الأبناء و الزواج ككل.. هل كان يقصد هذا؟ أم أنني رأيت القصة بهذا الشكل تبعا لأيدولوجيتي الخاصة؟
هل كان كافكا يقصد شيئا آخر؟
مثلا.. هل كان بلومفيلد إنسانا سلطويا يبحث عن السيطرة على كل شئ حتى الأشياء الخارجة عن إرادته؟
هل كان بلومفيلد على خطأ عندما كان يقيس كل شيء في الحياة بشكل عملي فيقارن بين المجهود و النتيجة؟
تستطيع تخيل الكثير من الأشياء.. لكن المحصلة النهائية هى قصة أخرى مثيرة للفكر من كافكا

كيف يمكنك التخلص من إزعاج طفلين؟ ببساطة بوجود الشريك الآخر.. الزوجة.. فهى فقط لديها القوة الكافية أن تتحكم فيهما..
"ربما كان وجود كلب لديه مفيد في لحظة كهذه .. حيوان صغير و لطيف في استطاعته أن ينهي أمر هاتين الكرتين على الفور"
فإذا كان وجود الشريك متعثر.. فكيف يمكن القضاء على إزعاج تلك الأطفال؟ ببساطة ألق بهم وسط مجموعة أطفال آخرين سينشغلون جميعا في اللعب و سينسونك تماما!
"كان الصبي مازال يقف في الدهليز... قد يعطيهما بلومفيلد له .. سينضم إليه أطفال آخرين.. ستتحول الكرتان في النهاية و إلى الأبد إلى مجرد كرات للهو و ستتوقفان عن كونهما مرافقين لبلومفيلد"
في النصف الثاني من القصة .. ظهر المتدربان.. و كما قامت الكرتان بدور الأبناء في المنزل فالمتدربان قاما بدور الأبناء في العمل..
وككل الأبناء فالمتدربان كانا عابثين.. لا يمكن الاعتماد عليهما.. غير قادرين على التحرك باستقلالية.. و يحتاجان دائما إلى المكافأة لكي يقوما بأي عمل.. أو إلى العقاب بسبب الأخطاء المتكررة..
كافكا في هذه القصة قدم صورة شديدة السوادوية لفكرة الأبناء و الزواج ككل.. هل كان يقصد هذا؟ أم أنني رأيت القصة بهذا الشكل تبعا لأيدولوجيتي الخاصة؟
هل كان كافكا يقصد شيئا آخر؟
مثلا.. هل كان بلومفيلد إنسانا سلطويا يبحث عن السيطرة على كل شئ حتى الأشياء الخارجة عن إرادته؟
هل كان بلومفيلد على خطأ عندما كان يقيس كل شيء في الحياة بشكل عملي فيقارن بين المجهود و النتيجة؟
تستطيع تخيل الكثير من الأشياء.. لكن المحصلة النهائية هى قصة أخرى مثيرة للفكر من كافكا

A beautifully presented edition by Four Corner Books, with artwork by David Musgrave. A gorgeous edition for any book collector.
The story of Blumfeld and his bouncing balls (ugh, sorry, it was too easy) is an unfinished one, as with a lot of Kafka’s work, written around 1915, and I believe it appears in other editions of Kafka’s stories, where it is usually around 20 pages, here it is spread to over 80.
Blumfeld on the surface is quite funny, as he is followed around by two small bouncing balls. But the balls really, I think, reflect his difficult and fractured relationships with others. And at the start we are immediately told that Blumfeld is lonely. So we have the main themes of loneliness and isolation.
Later in the story, once he has dealt the issue of the balls, at work he is harassed by two assistants and cannot rid himself of them. So again, he’s lonely but also finds people tricky and doesn’t really want to be around them. We might also again have the neglectful father figure in Blumfeld’s manager.
It kind of feels right that the story isn’t finished. And makes for a hugely entertaining, absurd and quick read for any Kafka fans.

قصة غريبة كالعادة..كرتان مزعجتان تظهرا فجأة في حياة البطل..يقرر فجأة التخلص منهم وإعطاءهم لأطفال خادمته..
في مكان عمل البطل ..اثنين من الموظفين الجدد المزعجين نوعاً ما أيضاً..
بس كدا..انتهت القصة فجأة..لا أفهم هل من علاقة بين هاتين الكرتين والموظفين الجدد لدي بلومفيلد ! أم لا!!
هل الكاتب شبه الكرتين بالأشخاص المزعجين في حياتنا!!

Another unfinished work of Kafka. Blumfeld is a happy bachelor who is living a very mediocre life. Since the story is incomplete I don’t know how to rate this book.

هذه أول قراءة لكافكا، أعرف أن هذه القصة-أو الأقصوصة إن صح التعبير- ليست من أبرز أعماله لكن هذا ما توفر في يدي هذا المساء ، أصبت بخيبة كبيرة إلى حد ما
* القصة إن جاز التقسيم فهي فهي تتكون من جزئين ، إيجازاً: تدور حول رجل عانس يسمى ( بلومفيلد ) متردد في اقتناء حيوان أليف يساعدة في مصارعة الوحدة، بعد يوم شاق يعود إلى المنزل ليتفاجأ بجود كرتين في شقته تتحرك بشكل مزعج...... و تجري الأحداث هذا الجزء الأول . أما الثاني فيكون في صبيحة اليوم التالي في مكان عمله و معاناة بلومفيلد مع لامبالاة المدير بحاجة المصنع للمزيد من الايدي العاملة ،كما اضطراره للتعامل كرهاً مع المتدربين السُذّج .
* مع أن القصة قصيرة جداً لا تتجاوز ٤٠ صفحة إلا أني وجدت بعض الحبكات الجانبية (Sub-plot) التي من وجهة نظري شوهت القصة وجعلتها شبه مبتورة ففي النهاية تكاد تكذب على نفسك لتخرج بتفسيرات عظيمة و تأويلات بديعة لهذه القصة لأنها فقط من كتابات كافكا.

Uma coisa que acho que falta a esta edição é dizer "histórias incompletas e fragmentos", que compõem talvez 80% do livro. O leitor que procurar conhecer Kafka através destas histórias encontrará bonitezas como "O foguista" (o primeiro capítulo d'O desaparecido), "O artista da fome" e "Josefine", mas encontrará também muitos fragmentos dos cadernos de Kafka que nunca foram publicados e que ele nunca quis terminar.

A lovely, well-made little book. There are few reasons not to want to spend 20 minutes reading about a very contemptuous old man who is suddenly plagued by two blue and white-striped balls. Add some vaguely menacing artwork and beautiful yet seizure-inducing endpapers and you're looking at perfection. This is a neat book for neat people.

En mis búsquedas de leer otras cosas de Frank Kafka, me tope con esta novela corta o relato con algún pisca de humor y farsa, algo extraño, donde se donde manifiesta la psicología de un hombre soltero, sus necesidades que quieren bordear los limites de la conciencia y sus luchas internas. De enfrentarse ante el mundo como un hombre soltero. De lo excéntrico entre lo irónico y la realidad. Se da un contrate por el deseo de una niñez en querer tener un perro y un adulto que no lo tiene, y pierde la postura cuando las pelotas le siguen.
En cierto modo, en una novela, con una historia algo inconclusa, pues hay algunos elementos que se dejan en el vacío.

Μια μέρα γυρνώντας στο διαμέρισμα ο Μπλούμφελντ βρίσκει μέσα στο σπίτι δύο μικρές γαλανόλευκες μπάλες που πηδάνε πανω-κάτω και τον ακολουθούν. Τι στην ευχή;!
Ένα από τα λίγα βιβλία του Κάφκα, που περιέχουν φανταστικό στοιχείο, είναι ίσως ένας στοχασμός πάνω στη μοναξιά, την οποία φοβόταν κι ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας, αφού ό,τι ενοχλεί τον Μπλούμφελντ εμφανίζεται σε δυάδες. Blumfeld, on the other hand, is very contented. He leaves the room and the already deserted corridor has a soothing effect on him. He takes the wool out of his ears and is enchanted by the countless sounds of the waking hours. Few people are to be seen, it's still very early.

This story is a satirical look at a fogey, who is so obsessed with orderliness and control, so much so, that's he's essentially unable to experience the joy of people's company. As the aforementioned quote implies, the only time that old Blumfeld is able to take the wool out of his ears, is in his lonesome. His neuroticism is characterized by balls clacking together, I honestly imagined a Newton's Cradle at the description, of this whirring personification of his obsessive compulsive tendencies.
I have seen other reviews that have implied that Blumfed was finally able to loosen up, but I didn't get that impression from the final sentences, it's more so that the man's strictness is falsely perceived as aggression: "They obey at once, but not shamefaced or with lowered heads, rather they squeeze themselves stiffly past Blumfeld, staring him straight in the eye as though trying in this way to stop him from beating them. Yet they might have learned on principle that Blumfeld never beats anyone. But they are over-apprehensive, and without any tact keep trying to protect their real or imaginary rights."
The final passage does not try to paint Blumfeld in a better light, rather it tries to underline his purpose. People who are seen as tyrants, often are necessary to keep order. The yīnyáng paradox elucidates the necessity for there to be a union of both sides, in order for peace to flourish openly. Perhaps, since old Blumfeld is a bachelor (as the title intimates), he is more of an authoritarian... without a feminine (chaotic) presence in his life, to serve as a counterbalance.

This one is bizarre and grumpy in the best way possible, the wittiness is absolute.
✦"No matter how much Blumfeld would love to have a dog right now, he'd still climb the stairs by himself for the next thirty years rather than have an old dog who will bore him out and breathe louder than him as it dragged itself from one stair to another.
That's right. Blumfeld will stay alone after all; it's not like he's got quirks of an old unmarried sitter, who wishes to have a subjugated live creature next to her, which she can protect, with which she can be gentle with, a creature that she wishes to constantly serve, so therefore, for this goal a cat, canary or even a goldfish would be enough. And if she can't have any of that, she'd be happy with flowers on the windowsill. Blumfeld, however, only wishes to have a companion, an animal he doesn't have to take too much care of, animal which wouldn't mind occasionally receiving a kick, animal which could sleep on the streets during the time of distress, but an animal which would, if Blumfeld asked it to, readily bark, jump or lick hands right away."

This was such an interesting little story and there's so much to pull from it and I am so surprised there isn't more discourse surrounding it. It is quintessentially Kafka - combining the ridiculous and absurd with such meaning and complexity. It reminds me of "The Metamorphosis" with its depiction of magical and miraculous events with a (hilarious) seriousness and unquestionable reality. While the parts of the story seem unrelated (the two magic balls following Blumfeld and his absurd workplace assistants), using these almost pet-like balls to show his deep desire for companionship, even when unwanted, was both hilarious and profound. Like I said, ridiculous at first, but what else is there? How do his haggardly assistants who pull at his legs and bother him all day long (notedly, extremely reminiscent of "The Castle"...) and these pesky magic balls represent his own self abhorrence and simultaneous self obsession and at what cost does it take to get rid of them? And do you really want to?
In short, definitely recommend this little story to anyone looking for something strangely wonderful and interesting, I 100% recommend. Perfectly imperfect

Incompleted story
The main character is Blumfeld is a lonely man who lives in an apartment. But one night he understood that there is no remedy for his loneliness by adopting dog or any pets because he knew that feeding a pet is a responsible behaviour. As a conclusion he gave up adopting a pet although he lived alone. At that night he coincidenced with two balls and the balls were moving into the room. Seems like the two balls knew his loneliness and wanted to escort him but he gave up addiction of smoking and drinking cherry liquor instead of throwing them out. In the morning he woke up and decided to lock them in the wardrobe and later he came back to give keys and them to child of his servant. He did everything what he thought.
Everything has been normally gone on well so far but in this novella expressed us that the internship crisis between Ottomar and Blumfeld and Blumfeld had to cope with the problems with his interns and their behaviours were like those two balls.
In conclusion it was an incompleted novella by Franz Kafka

Making my way through Kafka's complete short stories and just had to leave a specific review for this story. Fantastic, charming, it starts off as a lonely bachelor making his way into his apartment when he discovers two magic, forever bouncing balls which just won't leave him alone; from there it suddenly abandons that plot an turns into an elaboration on his awful work life.
This had the potential to be a full on novella the likes of 'the Metamorphosis', and it's just as unique and even more funny a story. Wish it was finished.

Just now read the beginning. It is ugly and gives me a headache. In spite of all its truth, it is wicked, pedantic, mechanical, a fish barely breathing on a sandbank. this is what was written in franz kafka diaries about this short incomplete story and in fact it is wicked .. this is heart breaking really the lonliness and solitude that this man has to face is heart breaking ..

A bachelor, lonely, discovers two bouncing balls that communicate (via quantum physics?). He tries to rid himself of his balls but they follow him around. The neighborhood kids won't touch them! Oh, the angst! Very funny, actually, and maybe my favorite ball story ever. (Yes, I have a 'balls' shelf because discerning readers should.)
