Wayne Kendrick is suspicious. His best friend, Jim Cason, has suddenly disappeared, and his claim has been taken over by the Blake Mining Company, claiming the land is abandoned. Wayne befriends Will Davis, an abandoned African-American boy, and Will leads him to a secret mine. He is shocked to discover men in chains who are forced to work the mine. Risking both slavery and death, Kendrick faces off against the slavers to save his friend's life.
I rarely read westerns, but we had this one and I decided to give it try.
I was pleasantly surprised. Kendrick is a warm, suspenseful novel with a bit of fun and romance thrown in.
Kendrick follows the story of Wayne Kendrick who pretends to be a gold prospector to investigate the disappearance of his close friend. They are some dangerous characters up on the mountain and Kendrick ends up having to deal with them all.
I was genuinely concerned about the characters. The story moved along at just the correct pace. I was never bored or overwhelmed.
I loved the resolution.
After reading it I read about the author and discovered that it was a woman...I should have guessed!!
While I may never get accustomed to Ms. Hilton's abrupt endings at least she leaves no flapping big loose ends. I do like the way her stories progress logically.
AHH. has penned a western action adventure about a miner who disappears and the family has no idea if he is alive or dead. A good friend decided to go undercover to determine his fate. What he finds knocks him for a loop. He find men chained in slavery working a mine within the mine. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
This book will have you chewing your nails as fast as you can turn pages! A.H. Holt's ability to take you back in time and immerse you in her stories is at full strength in this book. Highly recommended.
