Fandoms: Star Wars - All Media Types, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Relationships: Kylo Ren/Rey, Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren, Rey/Ben Solo -------------------------------------------------- “Is it working, for you?” Maybe it comes out a little needy, but Rey tells herself that it’s only because of how low she has to pitch her voice to talk to him. “Or do you maybe want to fake-break up?” Ben doesn't answer for a second. Then, just as Doctor Phasma takes the mic to thank the speaker and ask the audience if anyone has questions, Rey hears him say, “No. No, I don’t want to fake-break up.”
3.5 stars. I decided to read this before The Love Hypothesis as an experiment. As long as I turn off my brain and suspend my disbelief about how unrealistic the plot and characters are, it was nice. The dating scenes were sweet, funny, and cute, and the angsty emotions were well-written (although unwarranted given the nonsensical plot). On the other hand, the tie-in to star wars was super weak, and the smut scenes were a bit weird, and there was too much (way too much) telling and not enough showing. But again, as long as I keep reminding myself that Ben is supposed to be really dark and wounded and Rey is supposed to be really badass but secretly insecure and that they are supposed to be really meant for each other (none of which are justified by the plot here, but hey let's just assume that the characters aren't OOC), this was pretty good.
On another day I might even round it up to four stars, but blame SenLinYu for completely ruining my rating scale for fanfics.
Leer a Olive y a Adam como Rey y Ben out of this world experience 10/10
Ever-so-Reylo is one of the best content creators and writers for this ship (and in general). So talented! Based on personal experience, I thought she created a very accurate representation of grad school, academia, and professional conferences. Ugh, this fic is just so good and so deliciously angsty.
okay, so the plot and writing is done better in the love hypothesis.but this has such good moments in it especially the last chapter i really feel like people will miss out on that and this has a lot more smut
I finished The Rise of Skywalker the other day and then it dawned on me that I never read the original fic that brought Ali Hazelwood and her books into my life whaat I expected the fic to be somewhat similar to The Love Hypothesis, but some of it is word for word which is so cool! Some things are obvs very different but the vibe is the same, which is all that matters bc thats the thing I love the most in Ali's books. That and huge, tall guys that pine after out main girl so bad its almost sad😆
This was SO cute and fake dating is one of my least favourite tropes, but this really pulled it off! The reason made sense the characters had a little depth to them and the line “three of my rats are not self-administering cocaine.” Is going down as one of my favourites of all time!
Having read both this and The Love Hypothesis save your time and just read this one I promise it’s so much better.
Yeah I’m adding a reylo fanfic here - what about it?? I do need a reread of love hypothesis cause she did add a lot to the story from what I can remember. So excited for the movie LOL
Okay so i would have probably hated this book if it weren’t for the fact that this is Rey and Ben- to be honest. I mean it wasn’t THAT bad but… still not that good either.
I mean it’s a fanfic, so I don’t expect it to be written that good either BUT still.
So we were robbed of many things, some of them were shown in the “epilogue” (doesn’t even say how many days, months, years it was since the last chapter) so it’s KIND of fine- but I’d rather read it as it happens… and not for it to be shown/mentioned briefly.
So if you like the daughter/daddy type of books, this one is for you. The size difference is mentioned many times, is kind of fetishized. How “tiny”, “huge/big” he is, “how tight she is, how “her pinkie wraps around his thumb, warm and small”, that “she’s really young”, that “she looks so young then what he knows her to be”, a lot of “jokes” about their age gap (saying that he’s an old man and what not), how “she’ll never be more lovely to him than with her face scrubbed pink and those ridiculous buns”, that “she is so little, he can hold her down with one hand on her smooth belly as he wrestles her out of her socks.”
“Was it weird? Growing up with two languages?” she asks this, after having him confirm that he speaks Dutch- as if it actually “weird” to know two languages😭 As if the rest of the world BUT USA doesn’t already speak 2-7 languages.
“It couldn’t be more obvious, that she has never done this. And it couldn’t turn him on more.” what is this 🤺
Is it just me- or does anyone else HATE when one of them confess something VERY big in the middle of sex? Like… ugh I hate, hate, hate that bullshit. Yeah, well it happens…
She lies- like a lot…😐 and her explanation is that she: has: “no conflict resolution skills and can be awfully unassertive in certain situations, which is why I will often prefer a white lie to a possibly hurtful truth” like no 🏃🏽♂️
OKAY SO besides all of that… there were some good moments!
The smut was alright, I really liked that Ben was vocal. I just didn’t like that Ray was inexperienced and how Ben reacted to that fact- like he refused at first when he found out that she’s only had sex one time before LIKE WHAT- he said that she “was basically a virgin, as close to it” EXCUSE ME… anyways- then she responded with: “No. No. That’s not the way it works. Virginity is not a continuous variable, it’s categorical. Binary. Nominal. Dichotomous. Ordinal, potentially. I’m talking about chi-square, maybe Spearman's correlation, logistic regression, the logit model and that stupid sigmoid function, and...” sorry but HUUHHH?!
Fake dating, close proximity😎😎
Pretty funny👍🏽
Poe and Finn🥰
They got on perfectly, I mean they ARE Rey and Ben so of course they would- they are soulmates😤 they are so cute together.
“He would always die for her, but for this Rey of the witching hours, he might even kill.” I believe you😭
I'll probably like The Love Hypothesis better, for reasons that'll be clear in a second, but I figured that I'd read the original before the final published version.
My issue with Alternate Universe fanfiction is that, when it strays too far from the canon universe, it feels like an original story and all the characters having the same names can make things feel distracting rather than fun. I feel like that definitely happened here; the setting has nothing to do with Star Wars, so giving everyone a Star Wars name was distracting and detrimental rather than fun.
On its own, though, it's a fun, cute contemporary romance that also explores the difficulties of academia in a lighthearted way. I liked the characters, but only when I thought of them as their own selves rather than as severely displaced (and out of character compared to canon) Star Wars characters. Also some of the pacing was a bit off, presumably because, given what's stated in the author's notes, the author didn't realize how long the story was going to be, and thus couldn't pace out everything according to plan.
So, yeah, this was enjoyable, but I already suspect I'll like the de-fanfictioned version MUCH better.
I never really loved The Love Hypothesis too much, but I was curious to see how different this OG fic would be, and if it was better or worse. Honestly, I think I like this more than the published version. There are some things that I’m not sure why Ali Hazelwood changed (like the reasoning for Rey/Olive kissing Ben/Adam and getting into the fake relationship in the first place; it makes so much more sense in this fic than it does in TLH, and I always thought the reasoning in TLH was dumb and annoying). I also think that Ben/Adam’s character was a bit more developed in this one. Overall, this was a fun read, and it’s always nice to read the OG fic to a published novel
I read the love hypothesis first and I loved it so much that I wanted to read the source material as well. This did not disappoint. Of course many things were different, as well as characters and situations or scenes, but I also loved that there was a change of POV towards the end, and I loved the added stuff in the end with their life as a couple, because the book had a more abrupt ending. Loved this and I will read it again for sure. LOVE Ben and Rey (Adam and Olive) <3
A must read ❤️❤️❤️ I loved the love hypothesis and I really wanted to read the OG story Let me tell you…let me tell you the kylo ren POV are everything here 🥹🤩🌶️🌶️🌶️ I loved it So much more spice too And the epilogue …it was so cute I died
Bueno, dirán, entonces no te gustó HOF...
Setting this at 4 stars (really a 3.5) because that’s what I rated The Love Hypothesis, and well… this book is basically the same thing.
Don’t get me wrong—I started this knowing that TLH came from this fanfic (everyone lost their minds when Daisy Ridley’s husband got cast as Adam, and I wanted to understand the hype). But I thought it would be a bit more… different? Like, at least set in Tatooine or on a Star Destroyer or something. Instead, it’s an academia/PhD romance with Star Wars character names slapped on. But their backgrounds? Not used. No pew pews, no space battles, no war. Nothing.
For anyone wondering about the differences:
- TLH is more polished and has more plot (well, duh) - The first spicy moment in the hotel? Waaay more toned down in TLH. - Adam/Ben doesn’t have that other university offer here. - The conference drama is lighter—she’s a woman in science, not being accused of sleeping with faculty. - And the kiss? In TLH, Olive kisses Adam so her BFF realizes she doesnt likes the same guy as her. In this one, Rey kisses Ben to get away from a guy. TLH made a bit more sense with the setup.
Being a reylo fan I wanted to read the original get a taste of it too😋 and now I totally understand why the author decided to turn this fanfic into a book😍
“If you tell me what you want,” she says, breathless, earnest, “I’ll do it.” “I want you to stay—” another thrust “—I want you to live here—” another “—I want you to marry me." He presses in to the hilt, and then pushes even further, just to make her feel it. "I want you to take my name, since yours only makes you sad, I want you to wear a fucking ring, and I want you to stop biking at night, and I want to know things about you and for you to—” “Okay.”
100% recomendado!
Amazing like pumpkin spice latte, sunny afternoons and kissing a stranger (who is not really a stranger) out of the blue. This was an absolutely delicious read. There were a couple of aha moments that provided some background to The love hypothesis.
And the epilogue! Oh god, oh god! I loved it so much, I live for happy endings, the fluffier the better.
..." He would always die for her, but for this Rey of the witching hours, he might Even kill"...
I liked the plot structure of this fanfic (especially with the motivation to fake date) but the writing was more interesting in the published version. I look forward to seeing to what else this author has in store.
Just, so good. Gives more background and more story to our dear Olive and Adam and I adored it. I hope Hazlewood uses more of this to write a sequel to The Love Hypothesis one day... But this was perfect otherwise.
I said all I needed to say about this when I reviewed Love Hypothesis, but I liked reading this a lot. I thought it was fun and more self aware but ultimately an editor and some revisions really made TLH work.
My first Reylo (and read because I love the Love Hypothesis). There's not too much different here, aside from some characterization of minor characters and LH has a tighter plot (and IMO a better climax).
I read this because I wanted to see how the original compared to The Love Hypothesis. I wasn’t expecting to like The Love Hypothesis more, but I do. This was amazing, but I like the depth the novel goes into. Reading this was great because it really shows how Ali Hazelwood has grown as a writer.
*chefs kiss* this is the fan fic that was published as The Love Hypothesis. This was sooo good. I was initially disappointed there wasn’t any details from the Star Wars world besides names but the story was too good to get hung up on that. The way she did the epilogue was really creative too.
