Criminal defense attorney Tex Hunter has a target on his back.
Defending an accused killer is never easy, but when a homeless teenager is charged with the murder of a retired Chicago Police Detective, the pressure builds to breaking point.
Sidney McCann was no ordinary cop. He wasn’t a captain, he wasn’t a beat cop, and he wasn’t an average desk jockey—he was one of the most corrupt, twisted, and ruthless cops the Chicago Police Department had ever produced. But that history, that long line of accusations, didn’t matter to the current crop of police officers. They were a family, and McCann was one of their own. They would protect the reputation of their department, no matter the cost.
Fighting against police brutality, corrupt businessmen, and gang members, Hunter follows the evidence trail, leading him deeper than expected. The closer he gets to the truth, the more others want him silenced. The evidence Hunter uncovers provides the chance to reopen a case closed more than thirty years ago…
But to do that, to take that gamble, to take that chance, Tex Hunter must risk everything he loves…
Because I'm an editor/copyeditor, I read with a different sensibility. I admit to having trouble reading books filled with typos, basic punctuation errors, and just plain wrong words, such as "withering in pain" that should be "writhing in pain."
That said, this book was decent for a light read, but it would have been even better had it been edited for clarity, correctness, and conciseness.
With all that negativity, though, I do want to mention how much I love the puns that the characters frequently toss back and forth. For me, they're loads of fun!
I stopped before I got into Chapter 2. I can't recall the last time I did that. Something about the writing style irritated me in the opening chapter. As soon as I saw this SENTENCE I decided NO MATTER how good the story might turn out to be, I couldn't stop seeing this device in the writing style. "No matter how a life is lived, no matter how much love is given or how much pain is caused, no matter how many fights are had or how many friends are left behind, no matter how many breaths are taken or how many trees are planted, death comes to every life, finishing it in the same unfathomable instant." On its own that sentiment can be viewed as powerful and insightful, but when the device defines every paragraph (as far I managed to read) then it becomes annoying.
Wow, I can’t give away any of the story, but this story gets more suspenseful with every page turn! I am trying to figure out what is going to happen in the next book?
Tex Hunter legal thrillers are superb novels, full of action, tension, and corruption. If you like courtroom dramas, you'll love the Tex Hunter series. I hope O'Mahoney continues this series.
Have been reading this series by Peter O'Mahoney and thoroughly enjoying each book. I would recommend this series to those who enjoy suspense and justice with twists and turns

Rather interesting. A dirty cop story that kept my interest. As I wrote in a previous review, there were some issues with grammar. For example, something like "He showed it to John and I". If the editor had broken the two apart, they would have seen that it should have been "He showed it to John" and "He showed it to ME", not "I". it's throughout the book. So it should read "He showed to John and me". Also, in chapter 17, first paragraph, I believe that the word "electric" should have been "eclectic". I'm pretty sure that Mr. O'Mahoney meant eclectic. And the editor/proofreader missed it. The storyline is similar to others in the Tex Hunter series in that an illegal act has happened and Tex Hunter, who is a lawyer, solves the mystery that the cops can't (or in this case, they don't want to). It's an easy, fast read (and I'm a slow reader).
Whether these stories are fictional or not, our criminal justice system fit this storyline because our system is disgracefully corrupt. It needs a complete overhaul. Our system is really a bad joke. It’s designed to prey on certain people. It’s not for all citizens, it’s not a justice system for the poor and it’s not a justice system for people of colors. The criminal justice system is truly broken and corrupt. It needs to be reformed. It needs to be equal for everyone and no one should be above the law. I love how this author tries to expose different aspects of our criminal justice system bad behaviors through his penmanship. Great job 👏 author.
Hunter has another case with defendant, Mary-Ann Steele, that goes to court in the book. Is Mary-Ann guilty or innocent? I made my mind up based on the evidence and read on...
In the courtroom is where the real action starts... ”Hope is the ability to wish for the best even when faced with the worst”… Peter O'Mahoney effortlessly weaves the storylines together to keep the reader guessing until the last minute when all is revealed... The suspense builds and has you turning the pages until the shocking conclusion... This was another great story in a fascinating series...
This is the 3rd book in this series that I've read, and all of them have been outstanding. I appreciate the character development, the descriptiveness of the various subplots, and the richness of the stories Mr. O'Mahoney writes . While I always know how they will turn out, I'm not able to figure out how he will get to the successful conclusion. But he gets there, and the twists and turns are fun to read and make for enjoyable, ready to read, but suspenseful books. I look forward to reading more of this author's works .
I value the dialogue of real characters; well done here. I value an authentic sense of place; well done here. I wince at an exaggerated sense of us vs. them, namely such a thorough presentation of Chicago PD as apparently hopelessly corrupt. Too little exposure to the real crook, too little to the trial, too much on the protagonist's psychological wounds. And finally. The name Tex Hunter? Is this MGM Studio in the 1950s?
I really like Peter O”Mahoney’s writing style. Intrigued by the twists and turns of the stories. I hope someday Tex either gets his dad out of prison or he is able to clear his family’s good name. Maybe Peter will write in a life outside his law practice. Maybe Ray might have a bigger presence and help Tex out. On to the next in the series. Looking forward to see what crime Tex solves.
I have read this author's books out of order and have completed his next series before starting this one. I could tell that this one was his first as it was not as accomplished as the subsequent series, however, still a cracking read. Refreshing to have a lawyer whose parents come from a criminal background. Also, Tex is just a normal lawyer, no bells and whistles, just hard work and gets the job done.
I chose this rating because all 3 of his books had me hooked. The subject matter is something I look for in all my books. Peter O'Mahoney shares his personal thoughts. I love reading about lawyers & court. He had me hooked on book one. Anxiously awaiting book #4.
Peter O'Mahoney writes about real issues that plague our legal system. Tex Hunter is not a shy person and ain his work as an criminal defense attorney he goes after truth and justice for every client, even those who are too afraid of the outcome. The novels are a joy to read.
The author has written a very intriguing and suspenseful story of corruption, deception and greed that will keep you entertained and guessing as it twist and turns through a lawyer’s efforts to save two of his clients from conviction. A very enjoyable and entertaining suspense story.
Once again Tex Hunter solves a case right inside the court room and prevents an elderly client from a prison sentence. In addition, he evokes a witness to confess to a murder and that results in another client escaping a jail miserable sentence. But will he ever be able to save his father from perishing in jail?
Decent plot but O’Mahoney writes like he’s being paid by the word!!!! To much crap I.e.-needless words, repetitive descriptions. I guess his quik read keeps readers coming back. But three wastes of previous reading time on this guy is more tang enough.
Sorry Pete. I’m sure you’re a well-intentioned person.
This book is a page turner. The character's are individuals, but some how all are interwoven in each other's life. I'm sorry for the loss of your friends, but we always learn from our experience we shared. That stands out in this story. Thank you for a great story.
I had great hopes for this book. My first by this particular author and I was truly disappointed. It started well but sadly it lost it's fizz towards the end - rather like a damp squid! All in all the synopsis was better than the book.
It took me 2 days to read this book because I wanted to savor each and every word didn't want to miss anything. It made me proud of the attorney who believes in hope. I kept me on the edge of me couch.
This is a fantastic book. Has everything you can want in a story. Murder, Love, mystery and a great who did it. Man or woman you are going to love this. Thank you Peter O'Mahoney.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and regret there's not another book to dive into. Each book has several stories going on simultaneously, so it's quite engrossing.
Not the best plotted book in the world. Lots of insinuations "he was corrupt!" and a dropped hint here or there until a flurry of revelations at the end. But an entertaining quick read to help me get my quota at the end of the year!
Repetitive conversations between Tex and those who wanted him to stop threatening to expose the corrupt Chicago police department were very distracting. However, the twists and turns at the end of the book earned three stars.
Read his book 4 ,I think first. Liked his style and downloaded all Tex books. This book is on the series. What I like about the author is a fabulous description of Chicago and navigates thro the legal system of Chicago and USA. The books are good and some paras are great which I have higoghted
O’Mahoney has a knack of story telling that keeps you wanting the next page, his winds his stories around his relationships, family and love along with how justice should work. Enjoyed each one👍
