aight hk secondary students i gotchu 🤝 小組討論s start tmr and i’m stressing the hell out so hopefully this will help 🤠 get ready for bilingualism at its finest i am going to write this review like a goddamn ao3 comment

overall it’s an interesting enough book! 小思’s 文筆 is easy enough to understand although she does often quote external stuff i have never seen nor understand. but she’s very unapologetic in her thoughts and emotions; she’s not afraid to write them all out right on the page. this makes it easier to read bc you don’t have to fight for ur life reading in between the lines for 深層意義s like if she doesn’t like technology or the way young people behave she’ll just say that. girlboss
so yeah it’s a good book i guess that’s why they made us read it in the first place. however i probably would’ve enjoyed this much better if i wasn’t forced to read it but what can you do right

moving on to the separate sections:
人物:she writes about a wide range of ppl she encounters in daily life ranging from doctors and ppl in the elevator to historical figures like ghandi & mandela. she learns diff life lessons from all of these encounters. the two back-to-back chapters written years apart about the same person gave me emotional whiplash—really reminds u that this is the real life that someone else lived not just fictional made up stories like the books i usually read
fav: 〈氣味通感〉is abt someone who rides the bike to give 作者 the fried chicken that she bought and she slipped on the way so she arrives all bloody & bruised but all she cares abt is getting the chicken to 作者, who can’t find it in herself to actually eat bc she’s so worried about her friend. it’s pretty moving to see the power of friendship (tm) and how selfless & generous the fried chicken woman is

事理:this section is nice actually she covers a lot of different 事理s in every 散文. she talks about how to be a better person to other ppl like twisting ur body so others can pass by u & how u have to put effort & 心意 into things for u to do them nicely like in cooking
fav: 〈搭枱〉is abt 作者 in an 澳門 restaurant where they 搭枱s together. it’s interesting bc i’ve never done it in hong kong??? like i was not aware that this was a thing that existed. anyway so because of these table arrangements, 作者 is able to meet & chat w/ new ppl like they’re old friends. it is pretty intriguing bc she does bring up that hk rarely does this because we value “personal space” and we’re afraid of annoying strangers and our life pace is too fast. to chat carefreely w/ someone i’ve never met is a pretty wild thing to think about and 作者 apparently enjoyed doing so! good for her

萬物:i’m gonna be honest this is probably my least favourite section. sorry but the five chapters in a row about the same tree kind of put me off. also i do prefer stories over description so maybe that’s why. other than the 木棉樹 outside her window, she does talk about CUHK a lot which is also interesting because i’ve been there & my father is an alumni. i do not have a single clue about the plants she’s talking about but hey at least there’s that. anyways u can see that she really does truly care about the environment/nature and that’s nice to see?
fav: 〈漱玉〉is about a 金毛犬 who was abandoned by its owner & who the 作者 falls in love w/. however he gets really sad whenever someone mentions “3000 塊錢” because he knows it was his 身價. i liked this bc it wasn’t only about plants or trees or views and there was a story behind it. it made me sad obvi because the dog doesn’t deserve that kind of trauma. it shows what we do to nature leaves scars so we should treat animals & plants nicely!

生活態度:this section really resonated w/ me as a hk student. 作者 mentions that the hk life pace is too fast and she places emphasis on how we should live 靜 & 慢. obviously this isn’t really an option for me as a student from a band 1 school in the most stressful city in the world but we roll! she makes several good points and does criticise technology a little & compares it to the glorious act of reading books because tech oversimplifies life & makes it even faster & more hurried
fav:〈觀察無力〉shows that bc hk ppl’s lives are too fast-paced & we have too much things to do, we live life in a 走馬看花 way and we don’t 觀察 the things around us, whether it’s a 古舊石橫樑 or 銅鑼灣中央圖書館梯級上刻上的金句, and 作者 criticises that esp because ppl can be nosey but not observant. i actually really needed this reminder to notice the world around me and take a breath even if my life revolves around studying rn and i can’t go out much. maybe that’s the reason why i need this piece of advice, especially as an aspiring writer. 小思老師 i promise to at least try!!!

last but not least 文化:reading this section is so much better than cle classes like i’m sorry but it’s true. because 作者 is so experienced & older & wiser than me i get to read abt so many more cultural stuff and there’s even a lot of 對比 between 昔日 & 今日. this is really interesting bc i do participate in cultural activities & holidays such as cny but hk’s society today has really changed to be much more western (or i suppose that may be a class issue too and i’m just one of the more privileged ones.) it’s reaaaally interesting to learn about culture this way this section should’ve been longer instead of the nature one god damn it
fav: 〈竹棚的敘述〉is about 竹棚的藝技, it’s interesting bc we see them every day on buildings being renovated but we don’t really think much about it, we might even think that the workers responsible for these jobs are of lower classes/education levels, but it’s actually part of hk culture & the art of it should be respected. this also teaches me to notice & appreciate the world around me more

so yeah this book is nice if ur looking to read something that’s in short chunks & teaches u a lot of life lessons. the author has a really strong sense of wonder & respect/appreciation for every little facet in life & i feel like i needed that positive outlook. i do hope to look at the world in a similar way as the author does! 小思 is my bestie now. hope this review did ur book justice queen. hope this helped any struggling students who stumbled across this. if you like marvel follow me on instagram @clintnats and twitter @cliintasha. wish me luck on this discussion because the stress is taking literal years off my life span

Didn't finish the book. Because I decided to bring it to a temporary end. Now that I should start reading some other books. A simple yet inspirational book.
