The First Ever Collection of Traditional Sherlock Holmes Stories Specifically Written for Young Adults!
Belanger Books is proud to present a new collection of over twenty traditional Sherlock Holmes stories written specifically for young adults -- including a brand-new MACDOUGALL TWINS adventure! The story collection is written by professional writers such as David Marcum (The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes stories), Derrick Belanger (Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Seven), Elizabeth Varadan (Imogene and the Case of the Missing Pearls), Will Murray (creator of Marvel Comics Squirrel Girl), Rob Nunn (The Criminal Mastermind of Baker Street), Robert Perret (Sherlock Holmes: Before Baker Street), Peter Eckrich, Dick Gillman (Sherlock Holmes, The Collector's Edition), Kieran Judge, and Derek Nason (Sherlock Holmes: Adventures in the Realms of H.G. Wells), as well as a variety of student writers. Plus an introduction by Shannon Carlisle, BSI. The adventures in this collection had to adhere to Derrick Belanger’s “10 Rules for Writing a Sherlock Pastiche”. Holmes and Watson are as Doyle intended them with cases taking place in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, none later than the 1920’s. If you are looking for a fun, traditional collection of British mysteries then you will enjoy The Irregular Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The proceeds from this book will be donated to The Beacon Society, a Sherlock Holmes Scion Society which gives grants to teachers, libraries, and Sherlock Holmes organizations to help introduce students to Sherlock Holmes.
Author Derrick Belanger's publications include an eclectic mix: book reviews, articles for education journals, short stories, poems, comic books, and the graphic novel, Twenty-Three Skidoo! A former instructor at Washington State University, and a current middle school Language Arts teacher, Derrick lives in Broomfield, Colorado with his wife Abigail Gosselin and their two daughters, Rhea and Phoebe. Currently, Derrick is working on several Sherlockian projects: the Young Adult novel Sherlock Holmes and the Transformers of Time, the teaching guide Sherlock Holmes for Teachers, the pastiche novel The Funeral of Sherlock Holmes, and the film studies book The Hound of the Baskervilles: From Page to Screen. He also co-authors the web site Mystery Aircraft.com with author Chuck Davis.
This is a delightful book, aimed at young readers to entertain them with traditional Sherlock Holmes stories. No fantasy elements, great-great-grandchildren of the great detective, or stories of Holmes in an elementary school in modern day. The Irregular Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is perfect for kids interested in mysteries, historical fiction, or Sherlock Holmes in general. Editor Derrick Belanger has done a great service to the reader by labeling each story with it's reading level. Many Sherlock Holmes stories out there are above kids' heads, and this allows the reader to know what they are getting into before diving in. Adult fans of Holmes may find these stories a bit (ahem) elementary, but that's the target audience. So find a kid who likes a good story, and share this book with them!
Full disclosure: I have a story in this book, but would gladly give the exact same review if my name were not in its pages.
