Would like to give it 3.5 stars. A twisted tale. Understand from Brian Quinn's podcast that they went indy with it so they wouldn't have to compromise on the story and it shows, which is not a complaint. The "mature content" warning on the cover is appropriate.
I like the concept and the characterization is good. Flanagan's art is fantastic. Quinn has also said they have more story they'd like to tell with these characters in this world. I wonder if we'll ever see it.
This was so weird and dark but I loved it. If you're a fan of other adult comics, like Preacher or Sin City, you'll probably love it too. That being said this won't be everyone's cup of tea and I can see how someone bothered by violence or who is easily upset wouldn't like this.
I was so excited to own a piece of work by Brian Quinn as I am a huge fan of his. The art work is phenomenal and the storyline was not quite what I was expecting but kept me gripped none the less. It was dark but also funny in places. Would love to see a sequel or series come from it.
A junkie wakes from the dead, possessed by the collective soul of New York City. Three conspiracy nuts want to catch him to prove to the world they're not nuts, and a mobbed-up cop hunts him to cover up his own crimes.
Feels like a knockoff Garth Ennis title. Metro is filled with little violations that don't exist for plot purposes but are just there to shock and titillate: a blind guy gleefully fucking a corpse, a fat guy who never bathes falling on a little girl and bursting her head, gloriously unnecessary and splattery collateral damage during gunfights. It's an excuse to print the words "MATURE CONTENT" on the cover in all caps. Ennis doesn't usually feel this manipulative when he does it.
There's an interesting core of world-building here:
Metro leaves me with mixed feelings; I want to like it and at three stars I'm probably up-rating it a bit.
I’m not the kind of person who is bothered by violence so that’s not what bothered me about this story. I just found I didn’t care for the art style or the story itself. I couldn’t care less about the characters and most of them I don’t like. The whole thing was just a gross on so many levels. If the “gross” aspects pertained to the story or made the characters more interesting I’d be into it but it was pointless and not well written at all. I love Q and admire what him and his pals wanted to do here but Big thumbs down from me.
Violence, originality, weirdness and mystery. An intriguing start to a story arc with lots of potential. Metro pulls no punches and isn't afraid to venture into the darker, seedier corners of the comic world. I read this in one feverish sitting and I've re-read it twice since in order to really absorb whats going on. It feels fast paced as everything seems to happen all at once in the space of an hour or so.
If you're like me and tend to pick the underdog then this is one for you.
