Poppy Green can talk to animals! Unfortunately, they never talk back to her. So she started writing in order to imagine what they might say and do when humans aren’t watching. Poppy lives on the edge of the woods in Connecticut, where her backyard is often a playground for all kinds of wildlife: birds, rabbits, squirrels, voles, skunks, deer, and the occasional wild turkey.

We are reading this entire series and I felt this most recent addition lacked a little bit of the special sparkle the earlier books have. Also, a few of the details were off, which always kind of bugs me. For example, my kids both noticed right away that Mrs. Wise (the owl school teacher) looked different (why is she suddenly not a great horned owl? that's odd!) and my youngest looked for the painting on the final page (Sophie always does a painting to commemorate her latest "adventure") but there was none. Too bad.

Still, it's entertaining and I'm always happy when a book puts the spotlight on performing arts for children. It was great to see reserved Hattie find her courage and her special talent in the spotlight. I also very much appreciated that Sophie and Owen were part of the backstage crew that is so necessary to any successful theater production. Far too often, books focus only on the cast and that's a shame since many children might not want to be on stage but might enjoy other aspects of theater (theater crews are unsung heroes, trust me!) Sophie designs and helps build the sets and Owen runs the light board. Yay!

Cute story- Hattie the frog auditions for a musical and loses her voice. Sophie helps her get it backs and learns about supporting her friend.

1 - Horrible | 2 - Not Good, but Creative | 3 - Okay, Worth Reading | 4 - Good | 5 - Awesome!

5 - Awesome! - My rating of this is strictly from the perspective of a dad reading a book to his daughter. Talk about a message that is filled with so many great examples and conversations to have. I did not finish my review of Stuart Little, but I can tell you that there is ZERO conversations that book invokes. I would recommend this for any child. Great book.

Read aloud to the younger 3, and we are completely devastated that we are caught up in this series! This one was absolutely adorable, and as always I love how real emotions and real friendship situations are handled in such a good way.

Read aloud with the kids. My boys love this series. We usually read them in one sitting and we are sad that we are almost finished with all the published installments.

Fun. Friends helping friends. Daughter was adamant it was 4 stars after she said it was 1,000 stars... well ok?
