The Warrior's Meditation: The Best-Kept Secret in Self-Improvement, Cognitive Enhancement, and Emotional Regulation, Taught by a Master of Four Samurai Arts
2020 Readers' Favorite Award's Gold Medal Winner in Self-help. Discover the original, instinctive, non-religious form of meditation that has been lost to the world. Richard L Haight, award-winning author of The Unbound Soul and master of four samurai arts, shares the best-kept secret in self-improvement, cognitive development, and Emotional Regulation, which he calls the Warrior's Meditation.
For people of all backgrounds, genders, and ages.
To get a picture of the Warrior’s Meditation, imagine a battlefield scenario with a single Samurai stands surrounded by multiple opponents. A novice’s attention would jump from opponent to opponent in an anxious attempt to defend himself. Such a strategy soon tires the warrior, who will be defeated. An expert warrior will spread his attention evenly in all directions but still experience anxiety as he mentally plans his strategy. His thought and anxiety may be his downfall if his opponents are truly skilled. A master’s attention, like the expert’s, is spread evenly, but he remains as calm as the surface of a still lake. With no predetermined idea of what his actions might be, his body takes the right action without a single thought.
You may wonder how the Samurai’s experience bears any resemblance to your modern life. After all, no armies or assassins seem to be trying to attack you or your town. In one way, we modern people are not so different from the Samurai. With our busy lives, we don’t have time to spend hours a day in meditation. Instead, we need a meditation that allows our actions in a high-pressure, fast-paced world to flow from a depth of awareness. The Warrior’s Meditation helps you access and express from that depth naturally.

Richard L. Haight is an instructor of meditation, healing and martial arts, and he is the author of The Unbound Soul: A Spiritual Memoir for Personal Transformation and Enlightenment. He began his path of awakening at age eight when he made a solemn promise in a vision to dedicate his life to enlightenment and to share what he found with the world. He took his first steps towards that promise at age 12 when he began formal martial arts training.
At the age of 24, Richard moved to Japan to advance his training with masters of the sword, staff and jujutsu. During his 15 years living in Japan, Richard was awarded masters licenses in four samurai arts as well as a traditional healing art called Sotai-ho.
Throughout his life, Richard has had a series of profound visions that have ultimately guided him to the realization of the oneness that the ancient spiritual teachers often spoke of. This understanding ultimately transformed the arts that he teaches and has resulted in the writing of The Unbound Soul.
Through his new book The Unbound Soul, his meditation and martial arts seminar, Richard Haight is helping to ignite a worldwide spiritual awakening that is free of all constraints and open to anyone of any level. Richard Haight now lives and teaches in southern Oregon, U.S.A..
Richard Haight is quoted as saying, "True spiritual enlightenment embraces all of life with aliveness, authenticity, innocence and authority. It is what you are truly seeking."

I have read a few books on mindfulness and meditation, and typically find them educational and constructive in helping me develop my own practice. This book not so much. It was a short read, however not engaging in the least, and the story of living as a Samurai, which I thought would be so interesting, was definitely not.
The last 6 or so summary pages are the highlight of the book and the only real value I got out of it. I feel very cynical about this book, as others said it was great, but for me it was far from it. Wish I had $16.98 back.
I hate to give a book one star. It's like a failure on my part. Somewhere, someone exists who needs this book. There is a good article on meditation hidden in this book. A decent article on meditation. Hidden. So well hidden in passages about the elite samurai. Not the ordinary, plebian samurai. Hidden in the pseudo science, hidden in the actual science used to make questionable claims that lead us to conclusions that don't really make any sense. Just don't.
Life becomes more beautiful with heightened sense of awareness
I have been practicing traditional forms of meditation like chanting the mantra, focusing on breath etc. However, after coming across TEM I realized that I can meditate with my eyes wide open, 24 hours a day (During work as well) with wide range of benefits. The book is very well written and is easy to understand. Most importantly the techniques in each chapter followed by practice exercises impressed me a lot.
My life has transformed significantly after practicing this meditation. The first and very important realization I had is to realize that I am not my body, I am not even my mind. I am pure consciousness or awareness using this body and mind to perceive this world. This meditation is helping me to be absolutely aware of present moment irrespective of situation I am in. Because of this awareness, I am able to understand/perceive concepts better and in depth during my work. Because of this awareness, I am able to solve problems better in my work and suggest better ideas in team meetings. My productivity has increased a lot in my work. I am able to respond with my ture heart during difficult times with difficult people (Instead of reacting in a bad way)
After practicing this, I was able to merge with oneness (Universal consciousness) , I am feeling less stressed during my work. My sleep has improved significantly and my energy levels are always high. It is very easy to practice this mediation. During my initial days I would set hourly alarm to remind my self about this meditation and stay in meditative state as long as possible. I honestly believe that I am really lucky to come across this mediation in my life.
I would highly recommend everyone of any age group to practice this mediation and make your lives more beautiful by enjoying each and every moment of life with heightened sense of awareness. - AJITH KALLUR.
I liked the author’s unique take on meditation and his presentation of this new way of looking at meditation outside the usual concentration methods. His focus on the five senses, and ultimately using 'spherical' body awareness as the final step in meditation, really has some positive points and actually works (in calming the mind and offering a new perspective to live from). He also includes some very useful information on general lifestyle supporting tips, such as diet, environment, etc. The book as a whole was about the right length. I really liked the appendix and explanations at the end of the book. Worth a read/listen for anyone interested in different meditation techniques and perspectives.
Overall, I found this book to be a valuable and insightful read. As someone who has only been practicing meditation for a couple of months, I still consider myself a beginner in this field. However, this book served as an excellent introduction and provided me with a deeper understanding of meditation as both a practice and a philosophy.
I intend to continue exploring meditation further, as I’ve come to realize how impactful it can be. One of the most significant takeaways for me is the realization that meditation isn’t confined to formal sessions. It can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life — during routine tasks, moments of pause, or even amidst chaos. The ability to regain composure and cultivate calm within just a few minutes is invaluable, especially in today’s fast-paced and often stressful world.
Before reading this, I often wondered how seasoned meditators could sit motionless for hours without becoming restless or bored. I questioned what occupied their minds during such prolonged stillness. Now, I have a clearer understanding — that meditation is often about anchoring attention to simple yet profound focal points such as the breath, sounds, visual sensations, or even subtle scents.
This perspective was eye-opening for me, as it reshaped my understanding of meditation beyond just “clearing the mind.” I am grateful to the author for sharing this knowledge and helping me lay the groundwork for what I hope will become a long-term and transformative practice.
Meditation isn’t something you do, it’s a way of life.
This book revolutionized how I think about meditation. I used to think it was something that needed ideal conditions to truly master (e.g., quiet room, sitting down), but now I see that this was a limited mindset as to the true capabilities that meditation offers us. The fact that meditation can be practiced in virtually any setting and time, including while reading, was an eye-opener for me.
I have read other books on meditation, but this one was by far the most practical handbook for actually applying meditation in one’s life. The steps are very helpful as a guide to get you started, but you can also transform what the book offers into your own unique meditative experience. All the tools are included to help you do this.
I felt that Richard Haight was my personal trainer with his personable writing style – it was a highly enjoyable read. Also, there was much more depth as to discussing different forms of meditation that I had never heard of in other books or in online articles. I certainly did feel that I was learning “secret” techniques from an expert, and I was glad the author chose to reveal them.
I am someone who has read about 400 books, and this is one of the most enlightening books I have read. Many books will scratch at the surface of what the true problem is with many of us anxious, overworked, overstressed humans. For many of us, perhaps a root cause is simply that we exercise one type of being and awareness 99% of the time, and ignore another side to ourselves entirely. That other side is what this book will help with – feeling more in tuned with nature, more aware, more at ease and relaxed, ready to handle anything without the stress. Our minds need a break from the rigid, high-stressed and focused states that we tend to be in all day – meditation is one path to accomplish this.
There usually is not one panacea to living a good life, and so I appreciated that the author touched on some other aspects of living a good life, such as healthy eating and paying attention to our emotional states. This is quite a holistic book to helping promote your wellbeing and to overcome the problems of your life.
I suggest reading “The Warrior’s Meditation” twice and taking some notes on the book to gain the biggest benefits. On a first reading, you may not fully grasp the power of this book.
I feel truly blessed that a good friend of mine recommended this book to me. Read this book, be blessed, and bless someone else with it.

Richard Haight is the real deal. I have read a number of texts on meditation, and dabbled with many styles. Richard’s Total Embodiment Method is the most straight forward and pragmatic approach to meditation that I have found.
Richard writes incredibly well. He is very clear, and thorough, while making the information accessible to people coming from any number of background. Whether it be traditional meditation, neuroscience, psychology—Richard finds a way to make his message land; it cuts through the nonsense in a really profound and beautiful way.
If you are interesting in beginning meditation, or have been meditating and are looking to expand your practice, I could not recommend this book strongly enough.
Gaining calm quickly in a stress -filled society is at the heart of the text. Entirely secular in approach and guided stepwise from fundamentals to a complete approach we are coached to enter a meditative state without strict body posture, candles, incense or any of the other trappings commonly found associated with meditation. Warriors don’t have time for those niceties, and perhaps readers don’t either.
I recommend this book to anyone beginning the meditation process and to any experienced meditator. The author teaches vagal breathing, fixed-point focus, peripheral viewing, conscious hearing, conscious tasting, conscious feeling, conscious olfaction, and spherical awareness. Each can be used as a separate meditation but together will make up the warrior's meditation. Any meditator should read this book.
It's been a challenge and a half actually being able to find a meditation book that gives you examples and clear instructions for attempts, and this one delivers. It's definitely not a fast read, despite how short it is, because it's full of meditation practices. It took me way longer to get through it than I would've liked, but I really liked the examples.
It’s a good book, even though I’ve kind of felt it was a bit to repetitive, there was a few things that I learned from it. The main key is to meditate, at least try for 10 minutes and quiet your mind. Once one can do that, they can master greats things behind one consciousness.
Is alright for beginners to understand the background of meditation. However, for advanced meditation this book might be to basic. Anyhow, I really liked how Mr. Haight tries to explain the benefit of meditation and the importance of awareness using science and his experience.
I found this book because I suspected the largest difficulty with my shamanic practices was a constant low level agitation, and I was looking for meditation techniques or further training that would help me. This book was exactly what I was looking for, and the information is specific, helpful, and actionable. Great book.
I more than loved this book, I am truly inspired by it. With the warriors mediation and other techniques he teaches, I'm already feeling a greater calmness and clarity after a very short time.
This book definitely gave me a new perspective on meditation. TEM is the MMA of mediation so to speak and it is more practical to my day to day life than other methods of meditation!
Tiene algunos consejos útiles y da buenas explicaciones sobre el origen de muchos de los comportamientos humanos. No es el tipo de meditación que yo haría, pero para saberlo hay que leerlo. En español creo que la traducción no es del todo buena.
I noticed the benefits of this type of meditation when I went to a holiday party. Instead of feeling stressed I was able to remain aware. I am also noticing lots of benefits during my daily work.
El único libro que he encontrado hasta ahora, que plantee la meditación y autoconciencia, desde un punto de vista más adaptado a las necesidades de las personas que vivimos al ritmo del sistema actual.
Insightful but dwells to much on how this type of meditation is better. In fact all forms of meditation if used regularly improve us on our human journey.
I think that the author is correct in saying that TEM is needed in today’s hectic world. We all need to slow it down and experience the world around us in a calm way. Being able to drop into TEM quickly is agreat way to do that.
