I absolutely loved this book! I was so excited when Harold and Rachel announced on their YouTube channel that they were writing a book back in May of 2019. I couldn't hardly wait for it to come out!
I loved how the book was set up. The book goes back and forth between Harold's point of view and Rachel's. I loved this because I really got see how they were both feeling in every situation. I felt like I got a clear description of that was happening!
I loved the journal entries from Rachel! This helped me to understand how strong she was throughout this whole process! I also loved that at the end of every chapter was a section about what Harold was doing on Everest! I loved how detailed it was, and how real it was!
This book had me laughing, crying, and ultimately showing me how precious life is and how we are so blessed to live everyday! I would highly recommend this book to anybody who is even considering it! It was 100%, definitely worth the read!

A Higher Calling is both a love story and an adventure story all in one. Beautifully narrated by husband and wife Harold and Rachel Earls, this book captured my attention from the start and changed me on many levels. I loved how both authors' unique voices were portrayed and I feel like I got to know both of them as friends by the time the book ended. Their love story is so sweet and inspiring, and changed my perspective on my own future romance. This book deepened my faith and convictions, made me laugh, cry, and rejoice with Harold and Rachel, and inspired and uplifted me! I cannot recommend it enough if you are looking for a good read to do any of those above things. To say this book blessed me would be an understatement!

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

A Higher Calling is a thrilling true life story of how God protected Captain Earls and brought him home to his love Rachel. It recounts their struggles and strides from dating to engagement to marriage and then to their separation as Earls climbs Everest. Throughout the story, they emphasize God's presence with them and how He carries them through, drawing them closer to Himself.

I have sat and rewritten this review more than five times trying to find the perfect words to describe not only how good of a book in general it was, but how much it meant to me. There were chapters in this book that I seriously thought Rachel and Harold wrote for me because they related to my life so much. I am so happy for them that their book has done so well and that they have been able to tell their story. I encourage everyone to read what they went through.

This is such a beautiful story. It holds so much weight to what having faithfulness in God truly looks like through these two unique perspectives. Having spent the past several years following Rachel and Harold’s life through their online presence, I have been inspired, motivated, and have absolutely fallen in love for their hearts for others and the Lord. After reading these personal reflections and vulnerabilities, I feel an even deeper admiration. As a twenty-one year old girl who is seeking out a rich relationship with God and is at times questioning what my purpose in life is, this story has helped me dearly. Knowing how Harold had climbed Everest, I always thought about what a big accomplishment that it is and what an exhilarating feeling that must had been, but I never thought about the risks that were faced on the mountain. Wanting God near us in the fearful moments but then growing to be the one to yearn for God’s presence is something that Harold touches on and I can resonate with. I’m learning that lesson as I get older and trust to release all of my life to God. Reading these words made me feel validated and showed me that so much is possible. Its God’s strength that makes hard things possible, we could never do it alone. Thank you Rachel for this reminder and truth. I am able to laugh at the days to come, trading fear with the excitement to chase dreams and find independence while leaning into God. Love you Earls fam!

This is the most annoying, self righteous book I’ve ever listened to. I got the Audible because a friend recommended and personally knows the Earls family and I had high hopes. None were met.

I received the Reader's Edition of the book in the mail yesterday, and I already finished it tonight. I am completely blown away. Having followed Rachel and Harold on YouTube for years now, I somewhat knew of their story. But not to this extent. I laughed, I smiled, and I cried. Several times. Reading from both of their perspectives was so beautiful, and I could feel the love and energy put into telling this story. I want to thank Rachel and Harold for inspiring me throughout this book. I've always had a good relationship with God and my faith but sometimes waver on my dedication. After reading, I further understand the difference between "I want God close to me" and "I want to be close to God." After reading, I feel so incredibly motivated and inspired to dream big and listen and communicate with God every day.

I highly recommend this book. It will lead you on a journey of emotions. Some of the main themes of this book remind me of my favorite Bible verse: 1 Corinthians 13:13 - "And now these three remain: Faith, Hope, Love....and the greatest of these, is Love."

A Higher Calling is the compelling true story of one couple’s courage and commitment, devotion and faith in the face of high adventure, unexpected adversity, and spine-tingling danger.

Co-authored by Harold and Rachel Earls, Higher is equal parts biography/memoir, love story, epic adventure, travelogue, and faith-journey. It’s a delightful, uplifting read about two people who sacrifice much to achieve a common goal: summiting personal and actual “Mount Everests.”

Rachel and Harold take turns narrating their story. Although co-narrated books can be jarring, A Higher Calling isn’t one of them. The story flows seamlessly between narrators and is briskly paced. Sentences are short and pithy. The style is fluid and easy. Chapters are peppered with dated entries to provide a coherent chronology of events as they unfold. Transitions are smooth, whetting readers’ appetites so they can’t resist turning the page and finding out What. Happens. Next?! (I read the whole book cover-to-cover in one sitting.)

Harold is a senior at West Point. Hard-charging and determined, this guy makes the Energizer Bunny look like a piker. Rachel is a college student who wants more from life than a career and a paycheck.

They meet through Facebook and proceed to fall heads over heels in love. After Harold pops the question, the couple hits a snag: After graduation, Harold plans to tackle the world’s highest mountain despite little to no actual high altitude climbing experience. He later realizes that taking on Mount Everest requires a goal bigger than himself. With Rachel’s encouragement, Harold decides to climb in order to raise PTSD awareness and provide encouragement “to veterans in the midst of climbing their own mountains of adversity.”

The couple creates and edits promotional videos highlighting their cause, fund-raises, and founds “Team Hungry.” They’re still newlyweds when Harold leaves for a summit attempt on “the widow maker.” And more than a few hair-raisers.

In the process, Rachel realizes that supporting her fiance’s (and then her husband’s) goal may cost her everything, including the loss of the love of her life. She frankly describes her fears and anxieties regarding Harold’s bid for the top of the world.

Meanwhile, Harold chronicles how thoughts of Rachel keep him going during a dangerous Mount Everest descent in a treacherous storm. In fact, Harold’s piquant descriptions of his icy climbing adventure may make you want to grab another blanket. Or crank up the furnace.

Rachel and Harold’s inspiring journey of faith, self-awareness and personal and professional growth is generously documented with excerpts from journals, letters, text messages, and a collection of photos following the Epilogue. Several chapters include links to news stories or Rachel’s You Tube account. (Reading on my Kindle, the news story links worked fine. The You Tube links generated error messages.)

Along the way, they learn:
• To make decisions based on what’s best for the family, not just oneself
• To be a “team player” in marriage
• To focus on “us” and not “me”
• The importance of mentors and personal heroes
• The consequences of summit fever
• Sherpas are indispensable
• Why you do not want to experience a communication “deficiency” on Everest’s North Col.
• Why you should always check the “common sense” box
• Why you do not want to get stuck in Everest’s “Rainbow Valley”
• The mission shouldn’t come at the expense of the team
• Step. Pray. Repeat.

Here Are 10 Reasons Why You Should Get A Higher Calling:

1. It’s inspirational and just plain fun!
2. The book is chatty without being trite.
3. The story flows easily, like a kitchen table conversation.
4. The skillful weft of a genuine love story, mutual commitment, and a firm faith foundation come through loud and clear.
5. Candor, warmth, and humor are doled out in Himalayan-sized dollops.
6. The voices are fresh and frank, as refreshing as a cup of cool water on a hot summer day.
7. It offers rare insights into the challenges faced by military spouses and the military community.
8. By the end of this book you’ll feel like Harold and Rachel are your new best friends.
9. Great cover graphic.
10. It’s an honest biography that embraces and exalts the Greatest Lover of All.

That being said, here’s a caveat: While the relational and marital advice offered by the Earls is solid, it sounds a bit presumptuous coming from two twenty-somethings.

Even so, A Higher Calling is a solid, enjoyable read. Outdoor lovers, adventurers, dreamers and couples who are seriously dating, engaged, or newlyweds will benefit from and enjoy this book. Ditto anyone who cherishes a true life story told well.

This book pairs beautifully to Rachel & Harold's Youtube channel.

I discovered R&H from their viral Christmas video (mentioned in the book!) back in 2017, and they've become the biggest role models of faith and family for me. Specifically Rachel, in how she presents herself, consistently pursues the Lord, always tries to be vulnerable, exudes strength, and loves her family more than anything.

Anything wonderful that I have to say about this book, can be said 10x more about R&H, as their character, kindness, fierce love, friendship, nuttiness, and vibrant spirits SHINE through this story!
If you don't know Rachel and Harold yet, this book will make you part of the Earls Fam for sure! You can't help but not love who R&H are, you can't help but be inspired by their perseverance, faith, and true love.

This book surprised me! I thought I knew most of the details from watching past videos, but learning more about Rachel and Harold was so fun! The narrative style they chose for this story is fantastic. Not only is it unique, but the different POVs complement each other smoothly, and help MASTER the pacing. This book picks up speed from the early chapters and after that, you can't put it down. The focus and direction is so exact, with such a dedicated story to tell, that the narrative pushing through Harold's Everest adventure keeps you engaged (and tense!) the whole time.

Reading this, I was more emotional than I expected to be. Every part about God hit home for me, and it was truly beautiful to see Rachel & Harold's spiritual transformations and sheer dependence on the Lord in what was a very trying time.

I'm so thankful for this story, for the commitment it took to create it, for the constant dedication Rachel & Harold give to their Youtube community, and for the glory the Lord receives through them.
It's really hard to find role models who match your heart in the exact same way. It's hard to find spaces where I feel safe, where there is joy and a gaze set firmly upon the Lord. I'm so grateful that in times of hurt, discouragement, or those moments where I need a hopeful example of Love and Family, that I have Rachel & Harold and their story to look to.

Rachel, thank you for being a woman after God's own heart. I hope you know how much you've impacted my life and the lives of many others!

This book is a beautiful read from start to finish. Rachel and Harold have always inspired me with their love for the Lord and their faith in Him. Being able to read their story on a deeper level made me appreciate them even more. I haven’t watched the vlogs yet during their time with Everest because I wanted to read the book first, and I’m going to rewatch Rachel telling Harold he is going to be a father for the first time and cry even harder than I have before (and that video always makes me cry HARD). They inspire me to love others with genuine love and give me hope for a future spouse and family in the future. As a woman, Rachel always inspires me to chose God first and keep him at the center of EVERYTHING. Harold has taught me that the journey can be worth more than the destination, and they both encourage me to follow my dreams! I am so happy and blessed to be a part of the Earls fam. I am so excited to see what God as in store for them in the future. Thank you Rachel and Harold for sharing your life with us through your videos and this book. God is using you both for great things!

This book blew me away! I loved it so much! I couldn't put it down and finised it in one day. Rachel and Harold of Earls Family Vlogs are my favorite YouTubers and I have been a subscriber for years. Their book did not disappoint. I had no idea what Harold went through on Everest. I was shocked and in awe of what he and his team went through and accomplished. I loved that Rachel and Harold dreamed big and encouraged others to pursue their goals. Their faith in God throughout different times in their life was so uplifting and inspiring.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Penguin Random House for pre-ordering A Higher Calling.

Vulnerable. It is the first word I think of to describe this book.

In A Higher Calling the Earls get real about the mistakes they made and what brought them through those mistakes.

This book made me evaluate how I look at life, what I want out of life, and what I am doing to chase those things. This book made me think about the way I am treating others while pursuing my own dreams.

My heart beat fast with Rachel, my heart broke with Harold as he fought through, and I cheered them both on all the way through the journey.

This book has the vulnerability, encouragement, and love we all need.

Unfortunately I did not enjoy the book.

It lacked humility and was overly dramaturgized. The love story lacks experience and comes across as immature.

Standard lessons of everyone are overemphasised and give the impression that they are big when they are just the bare basics.

People go through much thougher lessons in life and learn lessons that go way beyond.

In "A Higher Calling," the enchanting love story of Harold Earls and Rachel Earls unfolds against the world's tallest peak, Mount Everest. This captivating novel takes readers on a journey that transcends not only physical heights but the boundless realms of love, faith, and a shared purpose that defies convention.

Harold Earls, a senior at West Point, had a dream that seemed audacious yet profound: to conquer Mount Everest after his graduation and, in doing so, raise awareness about the issue of PTSD among soldiers and veterans. But the call of the summit, like any pursuit of great magnitude, comes with its own sacrifices. As a novice climber and a newlywed, the choice was heart-wrenching. Could he really leave behind his beloved Rachel, who had her own dreams of being a wife and mother?

In "A Higher Calling," their extraordinary love story takes center stage. From an unlikely introduction and a whirlwind romance to a fairy-tale wedding, their dreams are unveiled. However, these are dreams that demand courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering faith -- in each other and in a higher purpose that binds their hearts.

As we journey alongside them, we witness the power of their love to conquer obstacles, whether they are the formidable slopes of Everest or the personal challenges they face. Their bond, deep and unshakable, demonstrates that life is not about what we have but what we do, not about what we receive but what we give, and not about what we want but who we choose to be.

"A Higher Calling" illustrates the transformative power of love and faith, transcending all barriers and making the impossible attainable. Through Harold and Rachel's inspiring journey, they are able to illuminate the profound truth that when our passion aligns with a higher purpose, we can surmount any challenge we encounter on the mountains of adversity.

This remarkable book teaches us that gratitude is the thread that binds us to joy. It serves as a reminder that choosing love and living in faith is a journey worth taking, every time. In the embrace of the majestic Everest and the warm bonds of their love, Harold and Rachel Earls inspire us to reach new heights and embrace life's profound calling.

Thank you to WaterBrook & Multnomah for making this book available to me. My thoughts are my own.

I love larger-than-life stories, especially when they are REAL. These true life tales show that anything is possible. They speak of great fortitude, faith and love. They show the resilience of the human spirit.

Part love story, hiking memento, leadership book and self development how-to, A Higher Calling brings to life the adventurous story of Captain Harold and Rachel Earls, known around the world for "The Earls Family Vlogs."

Harold and Rachel speak with the wisdom of seasoned warriors twice their age. They write candidly about their love story and his harrowing experience on Mt. Everest.

While I'm not a mountain climber, I was drawn to this book from my mother-in-law's hiking experience on the JMT in California. I've watched Mile, Mile and a Half and I've followed hikers' YouTube channels. From my removed vantage point,. I've seen what is required to endure such intense physical work and the exhilaration upon completion.

Moving back and forth between their personal story and Harold's mountain expedition, A Higher Calling reads quickly, engrossing both mind and soul into the lives of two dedicated Christians with a calling for their lives. I couldn't put it down. I wanted to stay up all night reading but took it slowly to enjoy it thoroughly. I love that their story is told conversationally, moving back and forth from Harold's to Rachel's point of view. I feel like this makes it more relatable to both men and women.

Rather than segment the book with "Application Points", it runs smoothly. And while this may be frustrating to some who might want action steps, it certainly would have detracted from and stopped the non-stop action.

Key Take-Aways
1) We were all created with a calling and a purpose.
2) We can do difficult things.
3) We are called to have great faith.
4) Don't let fear write your story.
5) Don't give up.
7) Follow your dreams.
8) Relationships are hard work and require intentionality.

I love how Rachel points out early on that her husband is all about self-development. Words of wisdom punctuate the text, giving the reader much to think about. Rachel's entrepreneurial spirit shines through as well, making it a great resource for burgeoning vloggers and bloggers.

Bottom Line
If you're looking for a true story of endurance, grit and faith, look no further! I think this is a great book for those about to be married or just married, especially as you navigate learning about each other in the first couple of years of marriage.

Those who love adventure, hiking and mountain climbing will also love A Higher Calling.

I was blessed by reading this book. I gained so much insight and wisdom on how to be resilient in difficult and uncertain circumstances. I look forward to seeing where the Earls go in the future.

P.S. I'd love to see this turned into a movie! Maybe by the Kendrick Brothers?

This book is a beautiful love story about an army officer and a social media sensation. Written like journal entries, the book details the lives of Harold Earls IV and Rachel Earls from courtship to marriage, and how their relationship survives and thrives through their various adventures. There is romance, spiritual lessons, adventures, travel, sports, mountain-climbing, missions, childbearing, and many enthralling stories to captivate the reader's attention. One of the most gripping parts of the book is about Harold's dangerous expedition up and down the treacherous Mount Everest. Apart from the magnificent scenes described, he tells us how the highest mountain in the world had become a deadly burial ground for many climbers. Harold prefaces each chapter with a journal entry from his Mount Everest climbing experience.

The two authors alternate their thoughts throughout the book. They share about how they met, their common faith in God, their growing love for each other, and the dreams they want to achieve. After a period of long-distance relationship, they eventually married, only to be separated again because of the Mount Everest project. They share their marital challenges of being apart, the need for regular communication, and the crucial role of prayer in their relationship. Harold writes about his love for baseball, his endurance through army life,, especially his Ranger School stint, his mountaineering experience, and his constant expression of love for his wife. Not to be outdone, Rachel too has her own unique stories. She describes her days of vlogging, how she maintains a social media presence, her travels, and her roles as a supporting wife to Harold.

This extraordinary couple gives us an intimate view of marriage and intimacy, faith and hope, life with purpose, and the constant dependence on God for all things. They do not claim to be superheroes of faith. Rather, they are ordinary people seeking to live beyond themselves, to reach out and make a difference whenever they can, wherever they are, and whomever they can touch.

I leave with two words to describe this book: Exciting and Heartwarming.

Captain Harold Earls IV is an active-duty Army officer currently serving as the Commander of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Harold is a graduate of West Point. He is a recipient of the Major General Smythe Leadership Award and is US Army Airborne/Ranger qualified.

Rachel Earls is a beloved vlogger, business owner, Army wife, and mother, and she is the founder of Earls Family Foundation. Rachel graduated cum laude from Florida State University, where she was heavily involved in service projects for organizations including the FSU Wesley Foundation and the Chi Omega sorority.

Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

Book Review: A Higher Calling: Pursuing Love, Faith, and Mount Everest for a Greater Purpose by Harold Earls, IV and Rachel Earls

A Higher Calling is a profoundly moving dual memoir that chronicles the extraordinary journey of Harold Earls, IV—the youngest American army officer to summit Mount Everest—and his wife Rachel, whose steadfast support and personal struggles form the emotional core of this narrative. More than just an adventure story, this book weaves together themes of faith, sacrifice, and marital devotion against the backdrop of one of the world’s most dangerous physical challenges. The Earls’ alternating perspectives create a rich, multidimensional account that elevates the story beyond typical mountaineering literature.

The book excels in its honest portrayal of the tensions between ambition and responsibility. Harold’s gripping descriptions of Everest’s deadly slopes are balanced by Rachel’s vulnerable accounts of anxiety and loneliness during his training and ascent. This dual narrative structure provides rare insight into how extreme pursuits affect not just adventurers but their families. Particularly compelling are the chapters detailing Harold’s spiritual crisis at high altitude and Rachel’s parallel journey toward trusting God amidst uncertainty. The authors avoid glorifying risk-taking, instead framing the Everest attempt as part of a larger mission to raise awareness for veteran mental health through their nonprofit.

While the adventure sequences are masterfully tense, the book’s greatest strength lies in its exploration of marriage under pressure. The Earls’ willingness to share unvarnished truths about their relationship—including conflicts about priorities and the strain of military life—makes their story universally relatable. Some readers might desire more technical details about the Everest climb itself, but the focus remains firmly on the human elements of faith and perseverance. The prose is accessible yet profound, with both writers demonstrating remarkable self-awareness about their personal growth.

Rating: 4.8/5

Section Scoring Breakdown:
-Narrative Depth: 5/5 – Exceptional dual-perspective storytelling
-Thematic Resonance: 5/5 – Powerful exploration of faith and marriage
-Adventure Writing: 4.5/5 – Vivid mountaineering scenes with purposeful restraint
-Emotional Impact: 5/5 – Authentic, moving personal revelations
-Spiritual Insight: 4.5/5 – Integrates faith naturally without preachiness

Thank you to NetGalley and the authors, Harold Earls, IV and Rachel Earls, for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rule one: You die on Mt. Everest, you stay on Mt. Everest.

That’s not really said in the book, but it’s most definitely implied. The conditions are so extreme there and so dangerous, that the bodies of climbers who have died on the mountain stay there. It’s just too dangerous to try to retrieve them, and often times the frozen bodies become way points for a climber.

I’d read a small blurb about the book, and when I had a little birthday money left over, and saw the book on the shelf of my local Walmart, I decided to get it.

I knew it was a book about a military man and his wife, both good Christian people, one of which had an impossible dream, and that was to climb Mt. Everest.

Captain Earls had always had the desire to conquer the mountain. When he started talking about climbing it seriously, it soon became something else. The desire turned into an expedition to focus attention on PTSD and Veterans’ Suicides.

While at West Point, he meets Rachel. They fall in love, and get married. What follows is an voyage of epic proportions plus a discovery of one another and who they are deep down.

The book is filled with life lessons, even if you have to read into them.

One, the easy way might not be the right way. One of the decisions made while climbing the mountain was when they made the final ascent, they decided to leave the radios behind. They had cellphones and decided they were lighter to carry and would preform same function as the radios.

Surprise, modern technology and the cold on Everest didn’t play nicely. The phones let them down. The desire to save weight in climbing could have cost people their lives.

Want another? Sometimes you have to go out into the storm. Captain Earls, with frostbite on his feet goes out looking for part of his team. Leading means looking out for the team.

The book is also a love story. It’s about two people growing together with a mountain standing between them. It’s about Rachel coping with the very real possibility she may never see her husband again. It’s about Harold facing the possibility of his wife becoming a young widow. It’s also about a woman loving a man so much she’s willing to let him risk the impossible and support him in ways only she can.

The book covers the entire range of human emotion from joy to grief, from courage to fear. And it works on so many levels.

A Higher Calling served as our couple devotion book for several weeks. It’s life applications rather than preaching, something I think we need more of in today’s world.

The book emphasizes that life is about serving, doing, and being, rather than simply acquiring things and fulfilling personal desires.

The story ultimately highlights the alignment of God's purpose with the couple's passion, showcasing how they transcend sacrifices and adversities in their pursuit of a higher calling. The book encourages readers to approach life with an attitude of thanksgiving and embrace the joy and love that come from living a purposeful and meaningful life.

"A Higher Calling" is an uplifting and heartwarming book that reminds readers of the profound impact love, faith, and perseverance can have in achieving seemingly impossible dreams. Harold and Rachel Earls' inspiring story serves as a testament to the power of love and the pursuit of a greater purpose, making it a compelling read for anyone seeking motivation and encouragement to face life's challenges with courage and hope.

I initially picked up this book because I was interested in reading about the author’s climb of Mount Everest. However, this book covers much more than that. It begins as a sweet account of the love story between Rachel and Harold, who are pursuing college life across the country from each other. A mutual family friend encouraged Harold to contact Rachel over social media, and their relationship takes off from there. They soon marry, but their married life begins with Harold training to climb Mount Everest. As the book progresses, we hear the story of that climb and how that experience, plus his military service, impacted their marriage.

I liked that the book’s point of view switches back and forth between Harold and Rachel, and the switch goes very smoothly. It was fun reading about their courtship. The book takes a more serious turn as the story shifts into Harold’s account of his climb. I liked their open approach in this part of the story: Harold admits mistakes they made on the mountain; and Rachel’s honest about the toll all of this takes on her and their families. I did not know that they have such a large YouTube following, and I’m looking forward to watching some of their videos on there. All in all, it’s an interesting book. If you are an older reader, as I am, it will make you smile as you see them grow individually and as a couple. If you are in the younger stage of your marriage, you’ll be encouraged by the way they’ve tackled their problems and grown stronger as a couple.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

It's been awhile since I've read a book from start to finish, but once I got my hands on A Higher Calling: Pursuing Love, Faith, and Mount Everest for a Greater Purpose, I couldn't put it down! In this heart felt book, authors Harold and Rachel Earls share their journey together and how God has been present in their lives through it all. Not only do Harold and Rachel share their triumphant times, but they share the difficult times as well. The transparency shown by the authors is something you don't see very often. Readers will find themselves laughing with Harold and Rachel and being moved to tears at different times throughout the book because it is written with so much sincerity. Harold and Rachel are a great example of a couple who is willing to walk through life together, despite their differences and the mountain that came between them. I highly recommend this book to anybody who needs or wants some encouragement to choose faith over fear in their lives, whether you are a young person just starting out on your own or if you're older and want to make some positive changes in your life. I am currently re-reading the book and I am getting more out of it the second time around than I did the first, which says a lot because I rarely read a book more than once!

Reading this reminds me a lot on a similar book by Jeremy and Audrey Roloff called "A Love Letter Life". Rachel and Harold Earls shared their first "phone call" love, how they are attracted to each other, and up until their married life.

Some of their stories are very inspiring, especially on how they come through the difficulties of long-distance relationships. One of the highlights is their win against the battle of lust by becoming pure. Their choice to exercise love by being patient is a message and a testament to young couples nowadays.

The only thing I cannot get out from my head is to understand how does reaching the summit of Mount Everest is fulfilling God’s plan. Harold Earls, with his background in military -without any prior mountain climbing experiment- has one thing on his mind: reaching the summit of mount Everest. With the help of Rachel, they plan to build a cause to prevent suicides by soldiers with PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder). I hope to see how does their cause affect other people with PTSD, because it doesn’t get enough attention after the mission have completed.

But still….meeting another person who has the same conviction and commitment for God is a miracle itself. It’s a God thing to be able to have someone who is loving and rooting for you to climb out of the mountain of the shadow of death (literally!), and I think reading this book made believe that God does works in mysterious ways. God does work wonderfully for those who loved Him, and from this book Harold and Rachel Earls clearly shows that.

A Higher Calling to which I fully agree that it demonstrates to readers that God’s purpose and our dreams and missions can be united. By approaching life with an attitude of thanksgiving, while being joyful and embracing the many aspects and types of love.

A Higher Calling demonstrates a Christian long distance relationship whose life journey embraces their beginning to a budding romance towards their wedding. The story focuses on their thoughts, stories of their up and down long distance relationship which outlines the steps they had taken to ride the storm with their faith, love and trust for God. Through their ups and downs they both tried to put God as head of their relationship to which they shared their difficulties of doing so. They both managed to help each other along with the inspirational moments and help from family and friends to adhere to their own and shared
Dreams. To keep themselves in harmony and walking side by side in togetherness with God they made personal sacrifices to ensure their dreams were completed.

Just reading this memoir has inspired me to find my own dream and goals.
A Higher Calling is a fantastic inspirational read, written by a married Christian couple I certainly recommend for anyone to read.

This autobiography is told from the perspective of both a husband and wife, and I think that leads to authenticity and a better understanding of this couple. Part of the emphasis is on Harold Earls' mission to climb Mount Everest. Part of the story is about his time at West Point and in the army. But then Rachel, his wife, gets to talk about the experiences from her perspective. She also shares about how she found her own mission and focus in the midst of her husband pursuing his dreams. Both Harold and Rachel agree that they are better together. But they are both quick to point out their mistakes and moments of selfishness in a way that still honors each other. This is a book about faith. This is a book about love. This is a book about commitment. This is a book about teamwork. Part of it happens to be set at the top of the world. What is unique about this story is the fact that Rachel happens to share a lot of their life online (Earls Family Vlogs.) So if you cannot get enough of the Earls, there is plenty more out there. I appreciate their honesty and transparency in the book and online, but it is not a tell-all without boundaries. They share their lives in a respectable and enjoyable way.

How to start?!? Well first off I live in Alaska. Reading this book while being surrounded by mountain views made this book feel even more real to me. My best friend use to work as a ski patroller for one of the tallest mountains in Canada. I would consider her a lover of mountains and climbing. She gifted me this book for Christmas this year. I was so excited to read it. I was not let down. This book is so good! I read it in one day. I was inspired by Harold and Rachel journey and their testimony of God’s love and protection. Their love story is beautiful and so romantic. This book hit home for me even more when I learned that Harold climbed Mount Everest for ptsd awareness. My father served in the Navy. My father does not have PTSD, but he still served and his service changed the course of his life. I appreciate our service members and all they have done for me and others. Thank you Harold for once again serving others and climbing for a worthy cause. And thank you Rachel for sacrificing so much to support Harold. If you are like me and you love Jesus, romance, and crazy daring mountain adventures you will love this book!

I have finished your book and boy can I say that it has changed me so much. Your reminded me of all the good things God does for us and this has brought me closer to Him when I have been struggling with my trust in Him. Your book has inspired me to pursue the dreams I set out for myself many years back with full force. Your book is inspiring me every time I read a page and I know it is inspiring every person that reads it and I thank you for that. You guys have changed me both mental and spiritually, and showed me that I shouldn’t let people judge based on what they see outside but what is on the inside. I have got to say that I have been watching you since you moved to Fort Benning, and everyday you help me to grow in my faith and helped me to realize that you don’t have to be defined by the negative things that people will do to hurt you. So I thank you once more for doing everything you do and everything you put your heart into because it changes so many people. Keep doing everything you are doing because it inspires so many. I love you guys and thanks.

This book sent chills down my spine. Thank you Harold and Rachel for sharing your story boldly and vulnerably. I look up to you guys, to Rachel like an older sister. Thank you for inspiring me in my relationship with Him, to be in a close relationship with Him. Thank you for telling your love story and what a Godly love story looks like. I have a hard time finding those stories amidst popular culture and it inspires me to continue pursuing a Godly relationship, I may not know who my future husband is yet, but I see your love story as a story that true love is a relationship that pursues God together and pushes each other towards Him. Thank you for sharing your college stories as well, as someone in college, it felt relatable. Thank you for sharing Everest and Ranger School. Not many people experience those things, so your storytelling is powerful. Thank you Rachel for being vulnerable in sharing your feelings and heart. All in all, THANK YOU for an amazing read. (Read it in 3 hours, it was too good to put down!)

I'm a better person and wife because of this book.

I'm blown away by how much this book has impacted me. To be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to like the book when I preordered it, but I love the Earls Family Vlogs and have been a subscriber for years. I purchased the book to support them.

I am so grateful I purchased this book. With every chapter I kept learning invaluable lessons that I could immediately put into practice within my own marriage and personal relationship with God. Rachel and her family have been an inspiration to me for years, and I treasure their vulnerability as it has helped me grow. I recommend this book to anyone, but particularly to single people looking to marry and married couples. This book would make an incredible small group study, for singles all the way to "well-established" marriages ;)

I just can't say enough good things about this book. Thank you, Harold and Rachel, for sharing your life with us. You are loving God, loving people, making a difference, and I'm thankful.
