Nóinín

Rate this book
Casann Nóinín, déagóir cúthail, ar fhear óg ar an idirlíon. Níl sé cosúil leis na gasúir ar scoil: tuigeann sé go smior í, agus titeann sí i ngrá. Ní maith léi am a chaitheamh lena cara is fearr, Eimear, níos mó – tá sí go huile is go hiomlán gafa.

Nuair a théann sí chun casadh leis an fhear óg, ní thagann sí ar ais.

Cuireann Eimear an milleán uirthi féin. Nochtann an sceon, an briseadh croí, agus leochaileacht an duine. Léigh scéal Eimear agus í ag dul i ngleic le ceisteanna faoi iontaoibh a bheith agat as daoine agus as an saol.

This is an Irish language novel written in 120 free verse poems from the perspective of two different girls about a relationship that starts online. The premise is that they fall out and it switches perspective. It's aimed at young adults and I rarely read anything other than classics or modernist fiction but this crushed me.

It is beautiful and will make you cry A LOT. It's a brilliant portrayal of youth and love, and the insecurity of young girls. All of it being told from the perspective of two young girls - one revelling in her carefree younger years and another obsessing over growing up - helps to drive home the point and makes it all the more emotionally effecting. I think this is incredible and I cannot recommend it enough. I've never cried after finishing a book but I balled my eyes after this.

P.S. if you don't normally read as Gaeilge but want to try, this is a good starting point. Quite simple but you'll learn new phrases along the way. If you're experienced with Irish you'll appreciate the nuance and beauty of the phrasing, and may pick up some new terms like "féinín" - the Irish word which is far cuter than its corresponding English term - selfie.

I would rate this 6/5 if I could. Please read it.

Thaitin an stíl scríbhneoireachta go mór liom agus an slí gur inis an t-údar an scéal ó radharcphointe beirt.
Mhuscail sé go leor mothúcháin ionam agus tá teachtaireacht tábhachtach maidir le sábháilteacht ar líne laisitigh de.
Ceapaim gur cóir don leabhair seo a bheith mar chuid den chúrsa Gaeilge dara leibhéal.

Sin Katfish gone wrong go díreach 😂 Is breá liom an stíl scríofa áfach agus bhí sé thar a bheith suimiúil chun scéal Eimear a chloisteáil. An dainséarach a bhaineann leis an idirlíon is dócha!

This is a the story of Nóinín, a young Irish girl, told through a series of poems in Irish. It's a moving, beautiful story.
I have intermediate level Irish so I didn't understand every single thing but it was still easy to follow. I'd recommend it to anyone getting back into Irish language learning.
