La Shawna Griffith is an emerging poet who was born and resides in beautiful Barbados. She is twenty-five years of age. She truly loves writing pieces to promote change in the world. Her goal is to become a voice for the voiceless, a hope and an inspiration.

La Shawna has been making serious waves as she has been featured in online magazines which are the Afro news which is an African online newspaper where she was on the front page and World Poetry Canada on their featured artiste page both in July.

In addition, she has also had features with Strawberry Lit Magazine, Urban Black Writers Association and Our Poetry Archive which are all American Based online Magazines.

La Shawna has taken that step further being the 1st black Barbadian to enter Noisside Poetry Competition and is waiting to see her placement in that competition. Furthermore, she has published a wonderful book of poems entitled La Shawna- Unlock The Door which she released in May this year on both Kindle Stores and Amazon in Paper Back.

In Barbados, La Shawna has received reviews by Easy Magazine, The Barbados Advocate and African Heritage Foundation. She is also one of the faces for None In Three which is a local charity that focuses on ending domestic abuse.

In 2017, La Shawna’s poem I Wish I Could Walk A Mile In Your Shoes was featured in an Indian Anthology named Re-Markings and she was the only female Barbadian to be a part of the collection.

Recently La Shawna represented Barbados as she was the only poet from Barbados in the book A World Assembly of Poets.

In 2018 La Shawna was privileged to perform at the day of National Significance in Golden Square in front of dignitaries.

She also was a performer at Save Foundation’s rally held in Hero’s Square where she gave a touching performing of The Battered Mary which is a piece which speaks about the shocking reality of domestic violence.

After the astounding victory by the Barbados Labour Party on May 24th, 2018, La Shawna was invited to perform at the 80th-anniversary celebrations for the party at The Lodge School where she received riveting applause for her piece We Salute You.

What an amazing book as it lives up to its title. One of my favorite pieces was SEX on Bush Hill. LaShawna accurately describes the thought process and overall transaction of a "fare picker", which is a common Barbadian term used to refer to prostitutes. In addition, Bush Hill is a legendary area known for such illegal activities within the island. She uses literal literary references like "use your pencil and draw on my canvas" to illustrate the notion of sex in an indirect way. Nonetheless, if the reader didn't pick up on her hints by then, she surely began to spell it out as she gets raw and calls the lady a whore and said she was selling her "pussy". What is exceptional though, is that even though these things are all true, she ends by recognizing that the "whore" is still a human being and a strong woman despite her profession. Overall, a truly informative, cultural and thought-provoking read.

R.O.G.U.E is the third book from Ms. Griffith and her growth can be seen as a writer and as a young woman existing within Caribbean society. It has a nakedness to it that engulfs the reader as she bears her soul on paper and give her opinion and worldview on many social phenomenon. In conclusion i recommend this book to anyone who enjoys poetry.

This was a deep read. Thought provoking and vulnerable. A good look into the mind of the author. Good job!
