Classic Science Fiction

by Canterbury Classics

Classic works of speculative fiction from the earliest masters of the genre.

Classic Science Fiction includes nine stories from masters of early science fiction: H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Jack London, Fitz James O’Brien, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Stanley G. Weinbaum. The exploration of new concepts and technologies has driven the genre since its earliest days, and these works demonstrate how science fiction evolved to encompass not only speculative science but also humanity’s role in the universe.

Not A Lot To Read!

Except for two short stories and part of A Journey to the Center of the Earth, this book was just a sample.

A lot of favorites are supposed to be in the full book, but I didn’t get to read them.

I read only the first few chapters and before the journey got to the center.

I’ve never read the book before, so I might just find it and read it again. The whole story, not just a sample.

If you’re thinking about reading this book, it’s going to wet your taste buds and get you hungry for the rest of the book.

A wonderful collection fo science fiction greats including tales by Edgar Allen Poe, Fitz James O'Brien, Jules Verne, H.G.Wells, Jack London, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, H.P.Lovecraft and Stanley G. Weinbaum. I had read most of these previously, but it was a joy to discover them all over again. The collection is beautifully presented in a faux brushed leather cover. A must for all sci fi fans.

Good collection, interesting to see how the genre started to develop. I definitely enjoyed the cosmic horror the most.

While there's some good stories here, I hate publishers that copyright public domain works without adding ANY original content. My reviews for the stories will appear elsewhere.

A fantastic collection of sci-fi books! Fabulous!

This is a collection of 9 'classic' (old) science fiction stories, some of which I'd read before. About half were fairly enjoyable, the other half either not to my liking story-wise, or written in such a dated fashion that I found it distracting. I'd try one of them from time to time but sorry to say I didn't really 'love' any of the stories.

Can’t go wrong with this collection of stories. While some I wouldn’t think of as strictly science fiction you can definitely see the influences on subsequent works that makes these all time classics.

The stories are great but have a touch too much sexism/racism from their times

For me, this book goes from really hard to read to mediocre to enjoyable. I really liked The Invisible Man but Herland was hard to get through. I guess it depends on your own preferences but my rating of this book as a whole would be in the middle, 2.5 out of 5.
