Deep in the woods of the Chippewa National Forest, nearly five hours north of Minneapolis, lies an anomaly: 144 acres of 'virgin' timber, including rare red pines thought to be 250 years old. This patch of land, referred to as the Lost Forty, houses trees towering more than one hundred feet in the air. These trees weren't left alone to grow tall due to some kind-hearted, environmentally thoughtful steward. They survived due to a mapping error. During the 1882 Public Land Survey, surveyors accidentally mapped the Lost Forty as part of a nearby lake. So loggers never came for its trees, and they were allowed to grow old undisturbed. They are truly a sight to behold -- one Tuna and I have enjoyed, walking together among these magnificent giants in silence. Beautiful things may grow and develop in quiet solitude if we leave them off our maps.
