Magritte dévoilé : Une biographie en 50 tableaux
René Magritte overleed in 1967, vijftig jaar geleden, maar Belgiës beroemdste surrealist blijft ons verleiden en verbazen met zijn verwarrende beelden van wolkenvogels, zwevende bolhoedmannetjes, een bloedend standbeeld en een trein die uit de open haard komt gereden.
Magritte ontsluierd. Een biografie in 50 beelden wil doordringen in de geheime wereld van René Magritte en de betekenis van zijn oeuvre ontsluieren. Samen bieden de vijftig zorgvuldig geselecteerde werken een chronologisch overzicht van zijn oeuvre en zijn verschillende stijlperioden. Een mengeling van iconische, wereldberoemde schilderijen en minder bekend, maar daarom niet minder verrassend werk van de surrealistische grootmeester.

To label René Magritte’s painting enigmatic would be stating the obvious and astutely staying true to that, art critic Eric Rinckhout’s concise and lucid commentaries on a selection of 50 of Magritte’s paintings often include questions or suggest possible clues to the painting – an approach which Magritte might have appreciated, being averse to interpretations of his work from a simplistic symbolic perspective.
Organised chronologically, with short biographical notes stitching together the transitions in Magritte’s life (1898-1967) and various style periods (youth, marriage, times in Paris, Brussels and London, flight to France during WWII, conflicts with the Surrealist movement, Renoir period, the ‘periode vache’, commercial success), Rinckhout offers an overview which for me worked excellently as a introduction, in combination with what I remembered from the exhibition on surrealism last year in Brussels, celebrating 100 years of Surrealism (Histoire de ne pas rire. Surrealism in Belgium).
Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present. (Magritte, in a radio interview)
For every painting, Rinckhout highlights four cut-out details, pointing at recurring motifs in the paintings (birds, apples, rocks, bilboquets, clouds, men in bowler hats), autobiographical references (the white cloths covering faces linked to his mother’s suicide) and some of the literary sources and art that inspired Magritte and the titles of his paintings - Giorgio de Chirico, Edgar Allan Poe, Louis Aragon, the figure of Fantomâs, Manet’s The Balcony, Da Vinci’s The last supper, the Venus de Milo.

The book might not entirely fulfil the promise of its tantalizing title, but anyhow lifts a tip of the veil, leaving the reader with the sense of having come a bit closer to the artist’s views and ambiguous work, of which the intriguing, poetic, witty and paradoxical titles (often suggested by his friend Louis Scutenaire) enhance the perplexing quality of Magritte’s undermining of the logic of the obvious through absurdity and mystery.

50 Magritte paintings, analysed by zeroing in on 4 elements in each, with references to the artist's life at the time of painting it. Super easy to read and learn more about Magritte, including how he saw his style and paintings - which I weirdly thought he never commented on. Well, he did, and it's fascinating. I love his work even more now. The book is extremely accessible though, so maybe not for connoseurs of his work or Surrealism in general.

Ook al kocht ik dit boek in 2017 op de boekenbeurs in Antwerpen, nooit was ik volledig door het boek geraakt.
6 jaar later lukte het op 10 dagen.
Dit overzicht biedt op een simpele en intrigerende manier een kijk in de wereld van Magritte. Het vogelperspectief op zijn volledige oeuvre brengt duiding in wat niet verklaart moet worden. Ik heb dit boek enorm geapprecieerd en ben blij met het beetje kennis dat ik nu heb vergaard.
De volgende keer dat ik Magritte zijn werk tegenkom in een museum, heb ik een extra kader. Kaders waar ik momenteel naar op zoek ben.

Magritte Unveiled is an overview of fifty surrealist paintings by the exceptional René. I bought it on a whim, in the shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels (not to be confused with the Magritte Huis Museum nearby). The museum was excellent.
This book is very good for what it tries to achieve, which is, to give glimpses of how Magritte inserted clues into his seemingly incomprehensible paintings. What kinds of repeated items and themes appear in his paintings? Where did he source the ideas? For each selected painting, the author highlights four elements of the painting and proceed to investigate such questions related to the highlights.
I liked the overall idea of the book. I also liked the selection, although fifty is too few from Magritte's hundreds. I didn't like as much the realization - the four highlights are placed over the photo of the painting (heh, Ceci est une reproduction d'une photo d'un tableau), and the explanations are terse and often inconclusive. Though I would love to read a Big Book of Magritte Symbols and Ideas.

‘Magritte ontsluierd’ is een bijzonder origineel boek. De auteur beschrijft het leven van de kunstenaar aan de hand van 50 bekende en minder bekende werken. Bij elk werk vertelt de auteur waar de schilder zijn inspiratie haalde voor het betreffende schilderij.
Zo komen we met behulp van Magrittes oeuvre meer te weten over zijn leven, zonder dat je daarvoor een uitgebreide biografie moet lezen. Bovendien maakt het een volgend museumbezoek zoveel interessanter.
Het boek is duidelijk en mooi vorm gegeven. Uit elk schilderij haalt de auteur een viertal elementen die hij toelicht. Het is geen ouderwetse geschiedenisles.
Een minpunt is dat voor sommige werken niet vast staat of de geschreven uitleg wel degelijk de effectieve inspiratiebron was. De auteur haalt dikwijls aan dat het een mogelijke optie is. Zo verwijst hij soms naar mythologische verhalen of de Freudiaanse droomanalyse, maar de auteur voegt er zelf aan toe dat het slechts een mogelijke verklaring is. Soms lijkt het wat ver gezocht.
Toch heeft het boek mij enorm verrijkt en vind ik het een aanrader. Ik kijk nu al met een ander oog naar zijn schilderijen.

Interessante opzet, maar sommige ‘analyses’ dreigden wat in herhaling te vallen of zeiden niet genoeg. Wel weer nieuwe kanten van Magritte leren kennen (matissiaanse werken, impressionistische periode).

Ik heb dit boek zeer graag gelezen, het brengt echt een duidelijk beeld over het oeuvre van Magritte en de mogelijke symboliek of inspiratie waaruit het is ontstaan.
