A Special Obsession

Rate this book
An alternate cover for this ASIN can be found here.

A Special Obsession is the first book in The Men of Crestview series. It is a stand alone, angsty contemporary romance.

"Mystery, love, anger, gun shots, tattoos, and a secret that could potentially harm loved ones. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough." Kelly's Nerdy Obsession

Rule Number One: Never let anyone get too close…

There was no way I would ever break that rule.
Even when the gorgeous Weston Wyndham woke up in my apartment.
Even when he walked into my kitchen without a shirt and exposed those ridiculously sexy abs of his.
Not a chance.
Especially after the arrogant ass started ordering me around.
In my house.
If he thought he could do that, just because he was a rich boy, then he’d better think again.
I was far too wise for that.
I’d learned the hard way what rich bad boys were all about.
Weston Wyndham was off limits.
End of story.
Only he had different ideas.
Because for some reason, he kept showing up, pestering me.
But I had a very deep secret to guard.
If I wasn’t careful, letting him in could spell disaster.

If you like books that are angsty, steamy, mysterious, with secrets and splashes of humor, then pick up your copy of A Special Obsession today!

RATING: 2.5/3 stars to A Special Obsession ★ ★ ★

Content Warning/Listing: Drug abuse and addiction; frequently mentions both. Childhood abandonment, parental neglect, emotional neglect. A past pre-meditated group rape/deliberate drugging that precedes the incident. Profanity. Multiple detailed sex scenes. Past death and grief of a close friend. Also mentions drug trafficking. Some violence (though minimal).

Something between 2 and 2,5 stars

Our heroine is named Special O’Malley. I don’t know why, but Ms Hargrove sure has an obsession with weird names. The name “English” (in the novel “For the Love of English”) was also weird but this name, Special, is both weird and funny. All her friends made fun of her at school and now in her adult life, she is still struggling with people’s awful jokes about her name. I didn’t understand why she didn’t change her ridiculous name. She said she wanted to then she gave up on the idea.

***********************************************

Special has her grandmother and Cody (her dead best friend’s son) in her life – plus her work. She doesn’t have much time for other things such as fun and dating. Cody lives with Special’s grandmother and she visits them every weekend. Special is also obsessed with the safety of Cody, and she takes ultra-dramatic measures for it.

***********************************************

Our hero, Weston Wyndham, is an uber rich guy. One day he ends up drunk in Special’s restaurant/bar, which is named “A Special Place”. When he passes out in her bar, Special carries him to her house with the help of Jen, a guy from her staff, and she lets this stranger sleep it off in her house.

I had a hard time understanding why anyone would let a stranger into her house, let alone a girl like her who is obsessed with security.

description

When Weston wakes up, Special realizes that despite being gorgeous and hot, he is also the most arrogant man ever. He orders her around as if she is one of his servants. She doesn’t take any crap from him and the feistier she gets, the more attractive she seems to him.

***********************************************

Special is a strong heroine but I didn’t like her that much. She was too dramatic. She even shot him with a gun when she thought someone else was trespassing her property. Come on, wouldn’t you wait to see his face, at least? Then, she is not even sorry enough or doesn’t apologize enough. And he doesn’t make it a problem.

***********************************************

He says he wants to date her and pursues her but even though she is attracted to him, she resists for too long, repeating the same reason over and over until I wanted to throw my kindle on the wall!

Her reasoning is that they are people from two different worlds, that she is a simple girl whereas he is important, famous and rich, which is true; however, her repeating the same reasoning for more than half the book got on my nerves.

“You and I are different, Weston. You saw the house I grew up in. You saw the things I had. I'm not fancy. You had the best and finest things money could buy. To be honest, it makes me uncomfortable. We don’t mix. I belong in my world, and you belong in yours.”

Well, paraphrase the above paragraph and repeat it every few chapters… It gets more and more annoying every time she repeats it.

***********************************************

Whatever… The bigger problem is even though they were said to be attracted to each other, I felt no chemistry between them. None whatsoever…

***********************************************

Weston is not the ideal guy, either. Because he is dependent upon his family for financial reasons, he lets his parents treat him like shit. He has other dreams in the world but he works like a slave in his father’s company where he treats him like sh*t, fearing his father wouldn’t let him use his trust fund if he pisses him off. His being too slow in getting his own life into his own hands was also annoying.

***********************************************

There are a great many side characters, a lot of secrets and drama outweighing the little romance and connection between them.

Work-related problems, family-related problems, problems coming from their past were all too much for me.

Because it was TOO SLOW, TOO DRAGGING & TOO BORING, I couldn’t make myself continue reading it. After a certain point, I just skimmed & scanned to see how it ends but even the epilogue was boring.

***********************************************

Having tried to read "For the Love of English" and failing to do so as I hated that book and now, failing to keep my interest in this book, I think, maybe Ms. Hargrove is not my ideal author. Surely, I won't try to read from her again.

After pondering the whole morning on how to rate this book.  I've finally decided to give it 3 stars.  Nothing wrong with the book.  In fact, it has the following:
- strong heroine
- an H who chased the h
- a cute kid (Cody)
- a little action towards the end
- a sweet and cute epilogue

Basically, all the right ingredients BUT what seems to be the problem? Me and my moods :)

A Special Obsession by A.M. Hargrove is a very sweet, charming, and instant love story of two strangers who had an interesting special meeting. So what makes this book extra special? Well, the heroine for one is named Special O’Malley. Special is not your typical girl next door. She is sassy, independent, and feisty. She doesn’t take BS and so when she meets Weston Wyndham, she doesn’t fall for his charm at all.

Her first impression of Weston wasn’t the best since he came off as an arrogant cocky rich boy. So it takes Weston several tries to finally break through Special’s hard exterior. What started off as a bit of flirtatious friendship soon leads the girl from the wrong side of the tracks falling for the rich boy with a silver spoon. So what happens when Weston shows Special the kind of love that she needs… the special kind?

A Special Obsession is definitely your feel good family romance. It’s sweet, touching, and sexy in it’s own way. Hargrove beautiful blends the aspects that family doesn’t always mean blood and once you find that special kind of love to never let it go. And for Special O’Malley her story of finding that special love began when a drunk arrogant man stumbled and passed out in her bar. So are you ready to fall for Special?

I always associate A.M Hargrove on hot-AF and AH single dad ever since I read her book entitled For The Love of English. Since then, I was a sucker for her books that's why I cannot let A Special Obsession passed without me digging it. I have a penchant for tattooed heroes, bring in the heroine in the tattoo department and I am all in. But don't let those tattoos fool you, yes they are as kick ass as you want them to be, but behind that lies a story that will move you. And what's more reason to read the book? It's not just a romance, much more like a family romance coupled with sexy amd hilarious scenes rolled into one.

A Special Obsession really is special. Aside from the fact that the heroine's name is Special, which by the way is a unique name and really caught my interest, the book itself is so special in so many ways. The characters for instance are unique and to be honest, I adore both of them. The're both kick ass and when you meet them, I'm sure you'll love them as much as I did. GAWD! These two had me cracking up and laughing out loud I had so much fun reading the book. They are my person. They have this chemistry that I adore so much. They are what you call "opposites attract", what with different back grounds but they clicked and made this story so much fun and enjoyable to read. I'm not just talking about the hilarious moments but GAWD I am talking also about those scorching scenes that will really leave your knickers wet. That by the way, is one of Annie's talent, she could write a kick ass sex scenes. Not the OTT one but the one you will fantasize and live for the moment.

And what's more? Did I say family romance? Hell yes!! In as much as I want another single dad, I love how family is valued in this book. I was touched over caring and loving someone not related but hated and wanted to throat punch Weston's family. But you know what? with these drama, I appreciated that the characters were portrayed strong and resilient. My heart warmed over the love that surrounds with the book even with the negative vibes from Weston's family and I adore how little Cody was given scenes so touching. Gawd! This boy cracked me up. And the back story? Ahhh..it gripped my heart that's why I was so glad I was given a perfect ending.

Overall, A Special Obsession is a great read. It was brilliantly written and really touched my heart. I admit I laugh more than I cried over this book. But then, yes I cried. The back story got me and the love portrayed in this book won me over. It was sexy as hell yes, but this is a good feels book. It was refreshing even with the drama. I love and adored the characters. And for all of those holy Annie!!! How did I miss that turn of events??Seriously?? Oh girly, I did not expect that. Yes I know from that Prologue alone something is off, I was curious over it and I was picking up the pieces to solve the puzzle, but oh well you had me with your brilliant writing and perfect character's that mad me miss that twist. But then, great job! You delivered it well! And as always, I am in awe of your talent. I love this book so much! I am touched and again, you leave me with a warm heart, it was so full of love I feel likeit's gonna burst. And that ending? It was sooo beautiful.

A Special Obsession by A.M. Hargrove is a sweet, charming, humorous, instant love story between two strangers who had a very interesting special first encounter with one another. This was different from any other book I've read so far by this author and I'm not so sure that's a good thing yet. I'm not much into the whole insta love genre which this one seemed to be (maybe not insta-love, but definitely insta-obsession) and I didn't really feel a connection between Special and Weston until more than half way through the book.

Special O'Malley is not your typical girl next door heroine; she is feisty and independent and doesn't take BS from anyone so when she first meets Weston she doesn't immediately fall for his charm, like any other sane girl would. She meets Weston when he stumbles into her bar one night and proceeds to pass out in one of her booths. Her first impressions of him are of an arrogant, spoiled, cocky rich boy which isn't the best. It takes Weston several tried to finally break through her tough exterior and get her to finally agree to go on a date with him. What starts off as a bit of flirtatious friendship turns into the tattooed spitfire that Special is falling for the rich boy born with the silver spoon. These two couldn't be more different from one another and from different backgrounds but I think that makes them perfect for one another. Weston may come from money but he doesn't really fit in with those kinds of people. I hated Weston's family and how cold hearted they were. They had absolutely no love for their son and were self centered and I just wanted to strangle the lot of them every time they popped up in the book.

A Special Obsession is definitely your feel good family romance that proves to you that family doesn't always mean blood. It's sweet, sassy, angsty, and sexy in every way possible. Weston and Special show you that once you find that special kind of once in a lifetime love, never let it go. Now are you ready to fall for Special and Weston like I did?

Blurb:
Rule Number One: Never let anyone get too close…

Weston Wyndham has more money on his tattooed wrist than I’ll ever have in my bank account.

Drunk, he was gorgeous, wicked, sexy… an inked god. Sober, he is the most arrogant man ever.

If he thinks I’m going to let him order me around like one of his servants, he’s wrong. If he wants me to date him after all this, he’s out of his mind. I don’t care how rich he is, or that he drives a Ferrari and a fancy truck. Those walls I put up are there for a reason … and they were built to last.

But he’s relentless, and hot, and it turns out he likes his girls a little fiery. Giving in doesn’t have to mean disaster—unless I break my number one rule.

Special O’Malley is a handful. With a name like that, she ought to be. Sassy as hell, bossing me around, but damn if I don’t deserve it.

I’m used to getting my way, dealing with difficult people, only she’s not buying any of it. Usually my money attracts women. Not Special. She doesn’t give a damn about it … or me.

There’s more than one stubborn player in this game. I have a few tricks up my sleeve and I’m not planning on giving up any time soon … at least not until I’m between her thighs, making her moan. And those concrete walls she has … I have news for her. Concrete crumbles if you strike at the right place.

So our Hero.. what his name again? sorry I'm still swooning over here how he sweetly treated our heroine that I forgot his name.

After she helps his poor drunken ass in her couch, who knew when he wakes up that he turned out to be such a sweetheart acting like he owns the place, treating the h like she is his personal help.
But of course lets give him some slack the poor man is having a rough hangover obviously and probably having a family drama you know my super duper rich family is an asshole to me trope.
Aww our poor Hero :(

So what our heroine do with this such heart melting behavior, of course she drools over the hotness of our hero, getting weak kneed just the sight of his madafucking abs (the girl needs to have her bone check its alarming really).

I'm in the "mood" so, sorry but idgaf what the H's deal was.

Credo di non essermi mai annoiata tanto con un libro . Dopo cruel and beautiful questa scrittrice non mi è più piaciuta. Un libro lungo con troppi dettagli inutili .

This book was a nice surprise.. no let me rephrase that – it was a great surprise. I was debating a long time if I should read this book. The plot sounded so good but I read a previous book by this author and I was only able to rate it with 2 stars and in such cases I am always careful when I come across the same author again.

I did not want to check on the reasons of giving that previous book that rating as I did not want to affect my opinion with it. But when I finally started reading this book I could not avoid having this lingering “thing” in the back of my mind wondering.

But those thoughts and worries all disappeared into thin air after the first obligatory 3 chapters I always give each book to make up my mind.

Whatever was wrong in my opinion with that previous book is nowhere to be found in this one. It is well written, funny at times and always deep.
There really was nothing negative I could say about this book.

Its more the opposite – on first glance the plotline seems to have been written already by other authors over the time. And in parts this might be true.
But the combination of leads, their environment, the background & secondary characters is so unique that the setting is a complete new one that is worth reading to anybody who loves books of that genre

So if you read the Blurb and think it might be interesting – I am pretty sure you will like this book.

Weston has some serious jelaousy issues going, "jealousy rears its head. Why in the hell do I feel like this all of a sudden? The thought of another man’s hands on her *** fills me with rage. “I can’t believe you allow those men to put their hands on you!” Weston likes to make sure his girl is well acquainted with his man parts, “let me un-weird it for you. Special, this is my ***k. ***k , this is Special. You two are going to become very comfortable with each other. .." I really enjoyed this book, Weston needed someone to show him tht there could be a different path in his life and that person was Special.

This was a great one. I believe it was my first by this author. I was on Facebook the other day when a scene from the book appeared there and I loved it, went right to Amazon and downloaded the book.
This book is really funny, sweet but it has a lot of os suspense happening on the back of the story.

Special never had an easy life. She went through a lot, stuff that should never happen to anyone but she still fought her way in life and made something out of herself. She owns a restaurant that's a success, takes care of her grandma and her friend's son. She is smart and does not bow down to fear or men.
Weston is the son of one of the richest families in Atlanta but he never fitted in with them. He's a free spirit and just wanted to be appreciated by his parents, which never happened. One day, after a horrible dinner with his family, he ends up in Special's restaurant and drinks himself silly.

After that, everything is crazy between these two. Special fights the attraction because of her traumas and Weston pushes back because he finally found someone that was not interested in his money.
I loved this story, it was sweet, deep and romantic. I loved the secondary characters and I'll definitely check out the rest of the series.

This book actually took me by surprise. To be honest, A Special Obsession, isn't usually something I would pick because I am not used to going from one character in a chapter to another but to my surprise it was a welcomed change.

Special, or Spesh, is a very likable character and is a breath of fresh air from normal female characters in books. She is vey strong, sexy, smart and caring but doesn't trust others too easily.
Weston sounds like my dream guy! Sexy, rich and loves to show his affection but doesn't know what love is until he meets Special.

A Special Obsession is a great read and a book you can easily lose sleep over because you won't want to leave a page unturned until you have finished it. A book I will keep at the top of my kindle to read again.

*ARC received in return for an honest review

A.M. Hargrove has done it again, another MUST read.
I have never wanted to hug a book like I have this one!!
I just need to look at the cover (which is just PERFECT and fitting) and I sigh. A Special Obsession left me feeling so warm and fuzzy and very protective over it. I know this probably doesn't make sense but that's how it made me feel.

The prologue began with a bit of suspense and I was hooked, I couldn't put it down. One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was the way love grew gradually between the main characters, Special and Weston - a slow burner which was a refreshing change from all of the insta-love/lust books I've read lately.

A.M. Hargrove has a way of bringing out my bad side with the wonderfully vile supporting characters she creates. I was so angry at the way Weston's family treat him, I wanted to do serious harm to them all! However, she injects healthy doses of humour, passion and tension filled drama into her plots to balance it out, keeping you hooked from beginning to end.

I loved the strength and feistiness of Special, how she wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted in life but, in love she was so sceptical that anyone could find her attractive, let alone someone like Weston who seemed to have everything.

Weston was all kinds of hot with his sexy looks, his tattoos and his dirty mouth. He may have been a bit of a spoilt rich boy but he melted me with his sweet and caring nature, and when he went up against his family my arms just ached to hug him...tight. Oh, I want a Weston in my life *sighs*.

This is the second book from this author where the youngster in the story stole my heart. Cody is just too adorable, I would get a huge grin on my face with the things he would say or do.

We get a sneak peek at Weston's best friends from school and I can't wait to read their stories!

I have laughed, shouted out loud and gasped my way through A Special Obsession and loved every minute of it, I can't recommend it enough.

~ 5 Princess Spike Stars ~

A Special Obsession is the second standalone novel by A.M. Hargrove that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Each book I read by Ms. Hargrove just solidifies why she has a fan for life. I get immersed into each of her stories and characters lives.

What I love the most about Ms. Hargrove’s independent books, is that the stories she gives us are primarily on the easy, fun read, but with some serious undertones added in. She adds some drama and suspense to this book, with our losing the fun and entertaining side of the characters. It’s just enough to keep her readers turning the page. This is also the second book where you will fall in love with an adorable 6 year old boy….Cody. I hope she continues to write children into her books because she has an amazing knack for it.

I loved the flow and pace of this story. It is told in Dual POV. A Special Obsession, in my opinion, could be classified as a friends to lovers story. Because she has the characters get to know each other first and enter the friend zone, before rushing into something more. I thought the journey she took Special and Weston on was perfect. Nothing was rushed but she didn’t drag it our either. She created perfect tension between them that you just kept hanging on for more ;)

In this book we follow the journey of Special (yes that is really her name) and Weston. These two characters come from different sides of the track. Special is a strong heroine who has worked herself to the bone to make a better life. She has a dead beat mom and doesn’t know her father. So when her mom decides to leave her grandma Mimi takes her in a raises her herself. Mimi gave Special all the love she could need, but don’t think she had an easy upbringing. Things happen to Special when she is high school, which lead her to have serious trust issues. So when she meets Weston, she is definitely not falling for his charms. Weston comes from wealth. But even though he comes from wealth he didn’t have a happy upbringing either. His parents are just down right awful!!!! I loved watching these characters realize that even though they have different economic backgrounds they truly have a lot in common and are just looking for someone to love them unconditionally.

I also enjoyed the suspense aspect of the storyline. She added just enough to keep me turning the pages but not lose the love story between Special and Weston. I also loved the secondary characters we met throughout the the book. Mimi, Jeb, Cody, and Prescott (Weston’s BFF). We also kind of meet Harrison (Weston’s other BFF) but only because Weston talks a lot about him. I am hoping that some day down the road we get Prescott and Harrison’s story as well. Each of these secondary characters were just as important to this story as the main characters.

As I have will all of A.M. Hargrove’s books, I would definitely recommend this book. If you are looking for that friends to lovers romance with a little bit of drama and suspense added in, then this is the book to read. Another GREAT read by Ms. Hargrove!!!!

Special is the owner of a restaurant/bar where she meets Weston, who is passed out drunk in one of her booths. Since she can’t leave him in her business or out on the street, she takes him home so he can sleep it off. In the light of day, the stranger is unlike anyone she’s dealt with before. Special works herself to the bone and really takes no time for herself. She only has time on Sundays for her grandmother, Mimi and her late best friend’s son, Cody who she has custody of. She doesn’t have time for this arrogant, self-absorbed, HOT, entitled, SEXY stranger who is making her feel things she has no business feeling.

Weston comes from money. He is an architectural engineer who works for his father’s firm. He is pretty much suffocating under his father’s control. Special is a breath of fresh air for him. However, in his pursuant of her, her insecurities arise and she refuses to even be his friend. They are from two different worlds and it could never work, right?

I have enjoyed a few stories written by A.M. Hargrove and this is another great one. I love the characters and how they come from different backgrounds. The obstacles they encounter along the way only make them stronger. We learn about Special’s past and why that closed her off to men. What a story it was. I also felt so bad for Weston and his background. Even though he was born into wealth, he has never experienced true love and affection from his parents. He embraces Special’s unique family as his own and they completely accept him as part of their own, more so than his own family ever has. It’s a beautiful aspect to this story.

The execution of the plot was brilliant and I absolutely loved the characters. I cried many times over especially reading about Sasha. What a heart break for her, her boy and her parents. The ending was pretty much perfect, the redeemable ones were redeemed and the unredeemable ones got what they deserved. I loved it. A.M. Hargrove always breaks my heart and then restores it beautifully. I always look forward to any book she writes.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Okay so when I was gonna start reading this it was a bit before I went to bed, because I'd test the day after and i just wanted having a look at it, then at 5:30 in the morning and the book is finished? How did it happen??

This is a very easy book to read, allt the time it was just like "just a little more", "little more", and then the book ended.
It was a very cute book, Weston was absolutely awesome ❤ He was so kind, understanding and just fun (not all would all would be so okay with what happened to his butt hahahahah). He seems pretty so hot also. YUM! always a plus
Special damn was cool, she could be a bit annoying when she was a little judgmental, with her background it is not that strange, but could be a bit annoying at times, but other than that she was great.
Then I must say that the side story of Cody and their background was pretty anticlimactic. Felt like they were built up to something bigger that never really happend and suddenly it was over, a little confusing altogether.

With the being said, I just want to say:

Weston Family pisses me off, he deserves better.
Jeb and Mimi are best.
Cody is so cute.
Wished Special had better self-confidence for she has come so damn far.
Wish there was something more to that whole side story.
Recommend the book for all who want something quick and romantic, with a hunk.
All in all, the 3.5.

A.M. Hargrove knocks another one out of the park! I seriously have not been disappointed EVER with one of her books. She knows how to hook the reader in from the start, and I couldn't wait to see where Weston and Special's story went!

At first glance, Weston looks like the typical spoiled rich guy. Or so Special thought. Because underneath all of those tattoos and his fancy watch was a guy so desperate for love and acceptance. (Neither of which he ever experienced in his childhood.) How that effected him, and how Hargrove wrote the character, makes Weston a marvelous romantic hero.

Weston and Spesh seem to come from such different worlds, but they aren't so different when you get down to their cores. Weston is such a softie underneath all of those tattoos, and he is the perfect foil to Special's sassiness. These two fit each other perfectly, and I was rooting from the start for Spesh to give Weston a chance and take him out of the friend zone.

A Special Obsession has all the makings of a feel-good romance, with a dash of secrets and drama thrown in (as Hargrove often does in her books!). And the models on the book cover are absolutely perfect! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
