It has been half a year since Count Leo VanOrden began his long, gory climb up the ranks of Ansiri's nobility. Now, thanks to the machinations of his rival-turned-bride, he finds himself only a single, bold step away from the seat of absolute power. But his fellow counts are not the only obstacles on his path to the Duke's throne. Far to the south, a breakaway kingdom threatens to split Leo's future domain in two.
And so, thrust into the middle of a blossoming civil war, Leo must find a way to strike a delicate balance: Preserve the unity of the Isles and undermine its present rulers, simultaneously.
Fortunately, whether on the high seas or at home in Ansiri, the right scheme can achieve anything.

While not the best book I've ever read, it gets a 5 since a 4 would short-change it.
Well written, edited and paced, I had no complaints about this book. The MC isn't the most sympathetic I've seen, but I can understand why he does what he does and he treats his "slaves" well and even frees them for good service. I'm interested to see it concluded, as I don't see more than one more book to resolve this story without dragging it out.
Hadley has definitely worked hard at his writing and improved immensely. This was honestly skin to a movie in its amount of detail. It was done in a way that keeps you engaged and covers a range of emotions throughout the story. I'm definitely impressed and looking forward to the next book!!!
Another gripping instalment in a series which shows no signs of slowing down.I await with anticipation to see what Leo does next as a couple of new characters were introduced who are sure to play a part in Leo's future machinations.

I really love this series. The intrigue, plotting, back stabbing and action is really good. The characters are developed well as much as the relationships between the characters.
Another great addition to the series. The plot and characters continue to advance. Leo faces greater challenges than in previous books and learns the value of his allies.

I really like where this book took the MC. It’s supposed to have been less than I year since he started his climb but he feels much more mature and fleshed out by the end of this book, despite his facing a dire situation at story’s end
