He's a man from the past -- and a man with a past...
When Harley Nelson got on his motorcycle and drove out of Portland, Oregon, 10 years ago, he left behind a bad reputation -- and a baby. Audra Worthington was the reason for both. Well, the baby, anyway. The reputation he already had. It's why rich girl Audra fell for him in the first place.
Now Audra's dead. His son, Brandon, is being raised by her family -- good girl Lauren, the perfect daughter, and her uncompromising parents. But Harley's a self-made success down in California and he's ready to take responsibility for his son.
She's a woman who knows trouble when she sees it...
She's a woman who knows trouble when she sees it.... And Harley Nelson's trouble. He's shown up at her door, saying he wants to get to know his son -- 10 years too late, in Lauren's opinion. Too bad he didn't stick by her sister, Audra, when he got her pregnant. (At least, that's the story Lauren's always heard.) And too bad he still looks so good in that black leather jacket....
It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s bestselling author career.
“I caught my day-care provider drugging my children with cough syrup and Tylenol to get them to sleep while I was away,” Brenda says. “It was then that I decided that I needed to do something from home.”
However, writing was the last profession she expected to undertake. In fact, Brenda swears she didn’t have a creative bone in her body. In school, math and science were her best subjects, and when it came time to pick a major in college, she chose business.
Abandoning her academic scholarship to Brigham Young University at the age of 20 in order to get married and start a family, Brenda dabbled in commercial real estate, then became a loan officer.
“When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book,” Brenda admits. “I learned how to write by reading what others have written. The best advice for any would-be author: read, read, read….”
Brenda sold her first book, and the rest is history. Now a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she continues to publish two or three novels a year, in a variety of genres.
Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are the proud parents of five children—three girls and two boys. Now that they are empty-nesters, she spends her free time babysitting her two grandchildren.
When she’s not with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising money for diabetes research. To date, she's raised almost $2.6 million. Her youngest son, Thad, has diabetes, and Brenda is determined to help him and others like him. She also enjoys traveling, watching sporting events and biking--she rides an amazing 20 miles every day!
3.75 stars! 💫 Huge thanks to Harlequin Audio and NetGalley for the ALC! This one was a wild ride—it took a bit to hook me, but the audiobook definitely made the journey much more fun! 🎧 The story? 3.5 stars. The audio? 5 stars. 🙌
✧ Bad boy hero 🖤 ✧ Second chance romance 💫 ✧ Grumpy/sunshine dynamic 💖 ✧ Family drama 💕 ✧ Opposites attract 💗 ✧ Small-town vibes 🏡 ✧ Forbidden romance 💓
Okay, so I thought this was going to be a light, quick romance, but plot twist—it was so much more! Harley, the bad boy who turned into a self-made success, comes back after ten years to meet his son, Brandon, whom he left behind (cue the emotional rollercoaster). And Lauren? She’s the perfect good girl, raising Brandon after her sister Audra’s death. She’s NOT thrilled to see Harley back in town... at all. Can they put their past aside for Brandon? Or will their history tear them apart?
At first, I wasn’t feeling the characters. Harley was a little too misunderstood, and Lauren’s uptight vibes made it hard to connect. But as they started working through their issues, the chemistry really started to heat up! I was all in by the end! 💕 I especially loved Harley’s character growth—turns out, he’s a big softie with a heart of gold 💖. Lauren also grew, seeing things in a new light, which totally made me root for her too!
But can we talk about the audiobook? GAME. CHANGER. Alana Marie Cheuvront’s narration was everything! She brought these characters to life in such an engaging way, even during the slower parts! 🎙️
In the end, it was a sweet, heartfelt read, but it took me a minute to really get into it. If you love second chance romance with family drama, grumpy heroes in need of redemption, and some serious chemistry, this one’s for you! 😊
Shooting the Moon by Brenda Novak Contemporary romance. Originally published as Silhouette Harlequin Super romance 2002. Ten years ago, with no other good options, bad boy Harley Nelson drove away from Portland, Oregon, leaving his son behind. The baby’s mother was reckless and only wanted the bad boy. Her father refused to let Harley near the child or assume any responsibility. So he left to make something of his skills, and hoped to make it back to his son one day. Lauren Worthington is young Brandon’s aunt and assumed the parenting duties when her sister died. She’s not happy that Harley Nelson is back in town and asking to be part of son’s life. As far as she’s concerned, it’s too late. He abandoned both her sister and his son for money. But Harley has another side to the story and as Lauren reads her sister’s forgotten journals, she realizes Harley didn’t have choices back then. Harley wants to be involved in his son’s life and starting to realize she shouldn’t stand in the way.
🎧 I listened to a audiobook version published January 2025 narrated by Alana Marie Cheuvront. The performance is wonderful with specific voices for the two main characters and emotional ups and downs clearly expressed. I listened at a speed of 1.5 to more closely match conversation speed.
An emotional romance with the past being turned over and the present opening doors to possibilities. The romance stands up to the time between today and 2002 with a few background exceptions that were amusing. One in particular was that the family money came from a chain of video stores. It was a huge entertainment money maker at the time. 😂. Bottom line, bad boys are still a draw for good girls and bad.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley and Harlequin Audio.
This is a Romance. I listened to the audiobook for this book, and I found the narrator to be ok. I had trouble getting into this story. The beginning I found to be really slow moving, and I think that is why I was slow to get into this book. I really loved the ending. This book is full of family drama, and the family drama in this book was just not my thing in books. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
Harley Nelson is back in Oregon to see his son Brandon after hearing about the death of his old flame, Audra, Brandon’s mother. Audra was a troubled soul, always getting into trouble, acting out to rile her strict father. Harley left soon after Audra gave birth, being run off by her father and didn’t feel worthy to come back until he made something of himself.
Lauren, Audra’s younger sister, was the one who took care of Brandon for the most part. She was the studious, serious and responsible sister and it fell to her to take care of Brandon when Audra was off being wild.
Lauren has always loved Brandon like a son, and she believed the stories her father told of Harley and his history with Audra. Now that he’s back in town and wants a relationship with his son she’s on guard. She doesn’t want to risk Brandon’s stability or mental health. However, his behavior doesn’t match what she’s heard of him, prompting Lauren to delve deeper into the past and find out what actually happened. As she gets to know Harley, seeing the way he cares for Brandon, she can’t help but fall for him.
Lauren’s parents were out of the country for much of the story and I worried what was going to happen once they got back. I was happy with the way Lauren and Harley handled the situation.
I love how Brenda Novak somehow makes a messy situation that seems like it would be cringe-worthy (like falling for your dead sister’s beau) feel natural! The story hooked me right in! I enjoyed the romance and seeing Harley and Brandon so happy to finally find each other and bond!
I listened to the audio version and enjoyed Alana Marie Cheuvront’s pleasant and smooth voice! ALC courtesy of Harper Audio. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
3 ½ stars. Not the best, but pretty good for a romance novel.
I enjoyed it, but more interesting characters would have been better.
Harley came from the wrong side of the tracks. He was thought of as a bad boy, but he really wasn’t. Heroine’s rich father hates Harley and tries to keep him away from his two daughters.
DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 304 pages. Swearing language: mild including the s*** word but rarely used. Sexual language: None. Number of sex scenes: one vaguely referred to. Setting: current day Oregon. Copyright: 2002. Genre: contemporary romance.
This is not my normal genre so have a hard time getting into the story. Reading all of Brenda Novak's book is a goal of mine so will read the romance as well. If this is your type of genre it is well worth your time.
Harley comes back for his son. He is having trouble with his past. People believe the wrong things. Lauren has been caring for her nephew, who is Harley's son. She is being difficult until she reads her late sister's journals.
This book would have been a lot better if the relationship between our two main characters had more of a buildup. They went from fighting about custody of the child to all of a sudden being in love, despite barely spending any time together on their own. I feel like a chunk was missing in the middle! I liked the happy ending though and the audiobook narration was done well.
"Shooting the Moon" was a fun audiobook that kept me entertained over the course of the two days in which I listened to it. As it is a novel by Brenda Novak, I knew there would be a conflict on the road to true love, but that I would get my happy ending. I was in the mood for something light after reading some heavy duty novels, of late, and "Shooting the Moon" did not disappoint. Audra was a pregnant and rebellious teenager who died of a drug overdose when her son, Brandon, was a toddler. He has been raised the last 9 or so years by his Aunt Lauren (the good sister) and his grandparents. His atrocious grandfather blamed the baby daddy, Harley, for all that happened, yet he was the one who paid Harley a mere $2000 to disappear after the baby's birth. Laurens loves Brandon as if he were her child, rather than her nephew, and becomes quite protective when Harley shows up at her door, with no warning at all. Harley had not known anything about his son, nor that Audra had died, but once he received word of her death, he wanted to raise his own child. Lauren and her parents are headset against this and promise to fight him in court. Over time, though, after reading Audra's revealing journals, she comes to see that Harley is a good person, and that Audra was a very mixed up and conniving girl. She spends time with Harley when he spends time with Brandon, and often when Brandon is not there. Of course, since this is in the romance/contemporary women's fiction categories, spark fly and a deep romance develops. Now Lauren, too, must fight her vey controlling and seemingly coldhearted father. Will she prevail with Harley, who is far more than he seems, and will he stick around and fight for custody? This is a novel about being misjudged, and later finding redemption and love, the greatest gift of all. Note that if you only like very contemporary novels, as in having been written in the last 3 or 4 years, please be aware this was written more than 20 years ago. People used land lines, rather than cell phones, and the novel might seem dated to you, but it did not bother me at all. 4 happy stars!
*Shooting the Moon** by Brenda Novak Narrated by Alana Marie Cheuvront Audio Review
Ten years ago, with his life spiralling out of control, Harley Nelson made the painful decision to leave Portland, Oregon, walking away from the life he had known and the unborn child he had yet to meet. Now, after a decade of absence, Harley finds himself back in Oregon, drawn by the heartbreaking news of Audra’s passing—the mother of his son, Brandon. Audra, a vibrant yet troubled spirit, had always been caught in a cycle of chaos, relentlessly pushing boundaries to challenge her strict father. Coming from a less privileged background, Harley was never afforded the opportunity to embrace fatherhood, and after intense pressure from Audra’s father, he was paid to disappear from their lives.
In the intervening years, Audra’s younger sister, Lauren, has stepped in to care for Brandon, nurturing him with the love and support he needs. Meanwhile, their parents are off on holiday in England, leaving Lauren alone to navigate the unexpected return of Harley. When she opens the door to find him standing there, a whirlwind of emotions floods her mind. Lauren’s instinct to protect her nephew battles with the curiosity and fear of the man who once left him and her sister behind.
In her quest for understanding, she delves into Audra's old diaries, peeling back layers of the past to uncover the truth about the family's fractured history and the circumstances that led to Harley's departure.
Originally penned in 2002, this story with many twists and turns has now been transformed into an audiobook, which I found to be highly engaging. However, I initially struggled to connect with the narrator's male voice. Nonetheless, the journey through Harley and Lauren’s unfolding drama ultimately drew me in, making for a compelling listening experience.
Harley Nelson returns to Oregon, eager to reconnect with his son Brandon after hearing about the passing of his former flame, Audra, Brandon's mother. Audra was a free spirit who often struggled to find her place, and her strict father's expectations only added to her challenges. Harley left soon after Audra gave birth, driven by a desire to make something of himself and prove his worth to her family. Lauren, Audra's younger sister, selflessly stepped in to care for Brandon, providing stability and love. She was the rock that held everything together, and her love for Brandon knew no bounds. Lauren's perceptions of Harley were shaped by the stories her father told, but as she gets to know him, she discovers a man who is kind, caring, and genuinely invested in his son's well-being. As Harley and Lauren work together to build a better future for Brandon, they find themselves drawn to each other, their hearts filled with hope and possibility. Brenda Novak weaves a tale that is both poignant and uplifting, a testament to the power of love and redemption. The story is a beautiful reminder that everyone deserves a second chance, and that with courage and determination, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges. I was deeply moved by the audio version, expertly narrated by Alana Marie Cheuvront, whose smooth and soothing voice brought the characters to life. As I listened, I found myself rooting for Harley, Lauren, and Brandon, cheering them on as they navigated the complexities of life and love.
Harley Nelson rode out of Portland on his motorcycle and left behind a girl, Audra Worthington, baby and a bad reputation. Audra is dead now leaving her perfect sister Lauren raising their son Brandon. Harley has now made it down in California and has become a changed man. He wants to take on his responsibilities of being a father to his son he left behind.
Lauren is a good girl from a good family who follows rules. Harley she knows is anything but. Harley has now shown up at Lauren’s doorstep requesting to see his son. She feels it’s trouble. Lauren feels that Harley is 10 years too late.
They both agree they only want the best for Brandon but can they set aside their differences to accomplish that. The more Lauren spends time with Harley she is slowly changing her mind about his bad reputation. When certain hidden truths come known does Lauren follow her heart or the rules.
Brenda Novak makes you rooting for Harley throughout the whole story. It’s cute, heartwarming and compassionate! Has twists and turns with lots of family drama but has a HEA! Real life characters! Was previously published. Would recommend!
Now released as an audiobook. Narrator’s male voice was waning but as the story went on I got used to her tone and it seemed to get stronger. Narrator was clear, very easy to understand and follow!
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers in letting me read this book and allowing me to leave an honest review.
So, now that I’m going to write my review, this book makes a bit more sense. Apparently it is a re-release of a book from 2002, and now, COMING SOON, is the audiobook version!
Harley and Audra dated in HS… He was the cool, leather clad, motorcycle riding guy. She was the rich, spoiled girl trying to get attention…
When they met, neither of them were their best selves… drinking, using drugs, etc…. But, they were young…
Fast forward ten years…. Audra is dead. Harley is gone. And left behind was their little boy, Brandon…
Lauren (Audra’s little sister) has been taking care of him, along with her parents. But when she learns that Harley is back in town, and wants to meet Brandon, well… what is she supposed to do??
Told from alternating POV’s from Lauren and Harley…and sometimes even Brandon, this will definitely touch your heart…and pull at the strings…
Family drama…. Difficult relationships… Bad reputations…Good friends…. And, last but not least…. Trying to start over again….
3 1/2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for me, rounded up to 4!
#ShootingTheMoon by #BrendaNovak and narrated nicely by #AlanaMarieCheuvrant.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #HarlequinAudio for an ARC of the audiobook which is **** due to be released soon, on…. 1/14/25, so look 👀 for it then! ****

Harley Nelson and Lauren Worthington knew each other. He was the bad boy from the wrong side of town who dated Lauren’s wild sister, Audra. Ten years ago he left town and Audra. Audra had a little boy and now that she recently died, Lauren is the one raising the boy. Harley is nowadays a successful business man and wants to not only connect with his son, but have some type of custody rights. Needless to say Audra’s parents and at first Lauren, are not thrilled with Harley and want to stop any contact. But as Lauren gets to really know Harley, and finds out some secrets kept by Audra, her view of Harley changes. Will they be able to realize that together they are the best for not only for Brandon but also for each other? I have to confess that while I found Harley a very likable character, I never quite warmed up to Lauren. The narrator Alana Marie Cheuvront did a good job with the voices. I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook by Netgalley andHarlequin Audio. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
I’m a huge Brenda Novak fan. Some people are just born to write books, and she is definitely one of them. I was a little nervous that this book from her backlist wouldn’t be written at the same standards as her current work. There was nothing to be worried about. This book was great! Lauren is a woman with family money and is primarily responsible for taking care of her nephew after her sister’s death. Her parents are the ones with legal custody. Lauren loves her nephew more than anything. Harley is a guy from the wrong side of the tracks and the father of Brandon. Harley finds out about the mother’s death and wants a relationship with Brandon. He finds so much more than he started out to find. This book grabbed me right away. Lots of great conflict and complications to make me keep reading. The writing was solid, and the characters jumped off the page. Great character growth. I listened to this book in audio and was very impressed by the narrator. She did a great job! Huge thanks to Harlequin audio and Netgalley for allowing me to listen and review this book!
Ten years ago, Harley Nelson got on his motorcycle and drove out of Portland, Oregon, leaving behind a bad reputation, a baby, and the woman responsible for both—Audra Worthington. Now Audra’s dead, and their son, Brandon, is being raised by her perfect sister Lauren. But Harley is a changed man. He’s a self-made success down in California, and he’s finally ready to take responsible for the son he left behind.
This is not my favorite Brenda Novak novel. There just seemed to be something missing. Not only that, the whole novel seemed to be rushed. Yes, it is a quick read but the connection between the characters is not really there and it is overly dramatic in spots, especially where Lauren’s dad is concerned.
This is narrated by Alana Marie Cheuvront. She is not my favorite. I was not a fan of her voice for the child. This is a pet peeve. But I did get used to her voice and it got better.
Need a quick romance…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.
I received this audiobook from the publisher for a honest review.
Thoughts that only one person is at fault is not a true statement, often times parents look for someone to blame. Harley comes back for his son. He is having trouble with his past. People believe the wrong things. Brandon’s mom had died so he was living with his grandparents and aunt who was basically a mom to him. Lauren has taken care of him even before his mom died so when bad boy Harley came into town she fought him. Didn’t want him to meet him. Then she started to think about what Brandon wanted and decided to let him meet his dad. Her dad was not happy about it. He had paid him off years ago trying to keep him away. But this time Lauren stood up to him. She is being difficult until she reads her late sister's journals. This appears to be an older book being re-released, I still enjoyed the story line although in the beginning Lauren is annoying. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley.
I was honored to receive an advanced audio copy of this book through Net Galley and jumped at the chance since I'm on a quest to read at least 50 Brenda Novak books (almost there!). Novak rights a number of romances but also is creative in other genres as well. IMO this book does not quite stand up to her normal standards of romance and if I read books based on the cover alone I never would have chose this one. In all honesty, I struggled with the first part of the book. Lauren and Kimberly came off as spoiled rotten, judgmental, and slightly flaky despite the fact that you knew they were not. The about face in their attitudes was just about the same as that of the relationship between Harley and Lauren, one minute they were at complete odds in the next they were completely in love. It just wasn't working for me. The story did pick up, it interested me more, and I actually was really enjoying it and am glad I listened to it but I'd give it about 3.5 stars at best.
A sweet romance of second chances, well sort of. Lauren is the little sister that hid in the shadows of her wild sister Audra. She is the one that took care of and raised Brandon her nephew and now that her sister has passed away. Bad boy Harley, Brandon’s father has come to claim his parental rights after 10 years of absence. As Lauren is trying to get a handle of how to work this out, she learns through her sister’s diary that what she thought she knew wasn’t the whole truth. And did Harley deserve a chance to know his son? With Brandon asking all kind of questions about his father, she has a life changing decision to make. Thank you #NetGalley and #Harlequin for this audiobook ARC. All opinions expressed are mine and mine alone. The narrative was great and kept me glued to the story. #ShootingtheMoon
I've read - and enjoyed - several Brenda Novak books. But this one has some issues.
For starters, it's a rerelease of book originally published 23 years ago. I hasn't aged well, and was't updated at all (multiple refererences to answering machines and other dated technology related mentions emphasize this story didn't take place in current times).
Then we had eye-rolling situations such as a heroine who loathed the father of her nephew, but seeing him shirtless in a window causes her to forget all negative feelings for him.
And we wrap it up with insta-love and a marriage proposal after a week. I was able to get through the audiiobook, but just barely.
* thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for providing a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review
Every time I read a book by Brenda, whether it is new or an older publication, I have nothing but good things to say. Shooting the Moon was no exception, as I immediately fell in love with the characters and the storyline. This book would make the perfect Hallmark movie, and as I was reading it I could see the story happening as vividly as if I were watching a movie!
The characters were relatable, and felt like good friends. The story flowed seamlessly and of course the love story was wonderfully written. All in all this is another great read by a great author.
SHOOTING THE MOON by Brenda Novak. I had an opportunity to "rent" the ebook vie my library. Honestly, it did take a bit for me to become invested in the characters - Lauren certainly portrayed the socialite well, and Harley, also played his role as the resident bad boy. However, as Ms. Novak intended, I am sure, both characters true sides came out and I grew to love them. I was rooting and cheering for them the entire time. Harley was truly a good guy with a huge heart. Lauren, once she opened her eyes, was a sweet and caring individual the realized what was right in front of her. Truly a good read.
Harley came back for his son that he had never met. This was an older book from Brenda Novak but I still really enjoyed it.
I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Alana Marie Cheuvront. The narration was good.
I wish I had known that this was a re-issue of one of Ms. Novak's books from 2002. It is your typical Harlequin romance from back then. Nothing wrong with that, I was just looking for a story written that had more to it like her recent releases.
A good romance. I wish they had updated it a little bit. The answering machine was a dead giveaway, even if you weren't tipped off by the type of story told.
Thanks to Harlequin Audio and NetGalley for the audiobook. All thoughts are my own.
Ten years ago Harley left Portland with nothing. He is back now with the purpose to meet his son and to try and have a future with him. Lauren’s life is going to change the moment Harley threatens to take away her nephew Brandon, the child she had raised as her own son. Bad reputation, lies, secrets, forgiveness and family dynamics are the center of this wonderful live story. The audiobook with Alana Marie Cheuvront is a very good one. Thanks to NetGalley for providing the ARC. This is my honest review.
Harley Nelson left town ten years ago when his girlfriend refused to marry him. Audra Worthington was rich and pregnant with his baby. She is now dead, and her sister and parents are raising his son. He's coming back to town to see his son and take him home to California with him. Lauren was always the perfect sister and never got in trouble and she is really the one that takes care of Brandon now. When Harley rides into town on his motorcycle she knows there is going to be problems. Great story of everything is not always what it seems.
I enjoyed this sweet romance way more than I expected. The main characters were written with depth, and the plot allowed for a lot of chemistry and development. I expected basic problem/solution, but it was actually a lot more complicated, and felt realistic and not at all linear. There was also the addition of great side characters as well, especially the son. And the ending was perfect and cheesy in all the best ways. Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Another great book by Brenda Novak. Narrator was Alana Marie Cheuvront. She did a wonderful job distinguishing between the characters. Would definitely listen to another that she narrates. Definite must read. Great book to sit in front of a fire curled up and lose yourself in the story of Harley Nelson and Lauren. Thank you to the author Brandi’s l Brenda Novak, NetGalley, and Harlequin Audio for the arc read. This is my honest review!
