Very much like the short-story collection "Voitures de nuit" but more satisfying to me because it's a novella. The central character is Kimiyé, a sensual and slovenly bar hostess who lives in the moment and tires of her lovers easily. Her official protector, Kiyoka, a successful but talentless writer, gets so irritated by her "infidelities" that he takes revenge on her in all sorts of petty ways, like having his servant damage her kimono or stealing her comb. Later on he even fantasises about assaulting her, not because he is deeply in love with her, but out of a mixture of sexual jealousy, hurt pride and sheer boredom. In fact most of these pleasure addicts lead terribly dingy and desolate lives, apart from Kiyoka's father, a distinguished scholar who has retired from the world, and Kiyoba's semi-official concubine, Tsuruko, an educated woman who escapes from Kiyoka's clutches not by taking lovers, but by getting hired as a research assistant by the widow of a French professor. To my mind it's not so much Kafu's psychological insights as his even-handed depiction of a sordid world that makes his stuff worthwhile.
