Nasty Rumors: Can You Believe What They’re Saying About the Bible?

Rate this book
Have you heard any of this scuttlebutt? ➢The Bible is too old to be relevant today. ➢The Bible cannot be trusted because we no longer have the original manuscripts. ➢The Bible’s original message has been lost in translation. ➢The Bible is too hard to understand. ➢What about the “Lost Books of the Bible?” ➢The Bible is just another religious book. In this book, Dr. Rod Pinder brings pastoral concern, scholarly insight, faith-filled devotional wisdom, and delightful humor to bear as he examines and refutes these and other Nasty Rumors about the Christian Scriptures.

Suppose there was a bountiful treasure buried in your back yard. Imagine a chest full of gold, silver, priceless gems, more wealth than you could ever spend. It’s on your property. The treasure is yours, and you know right where it is. You can see the mound. You walk over it every day and mow over it every week. However, some people, including some so-called experts, tell you the treasure is buried too deep for you to reach. The ground is too hard for you to penetrate. The gold is fake, the sliver is phony and the gems are glass. You’ll get dirty digging. You’ll wear yourself out and look like a fool, excavating your lawn. Besides, even if the treasure is real, once you pay the taxes, you won’t have any wealth left for yourself. What would you do? Would you let those allegations discourage you? Would you leave your fortune hidden in the dirt? After all, retrieving buried treasure sounds like a lot of labor. So, would you just give up? Or would you ignore those negative reports, grab a shovel and start digging anyway? Wouldn’t you at least try to find out whether the rumors were true or false? I hope you would at least investigate. Incredible riches are at stake.

Rod Pinder wrote this book because there is a priceless treasure at your disposal. It may not be buried in your back yard, but it is nestled between the covers of your Bible. Like many other people, Rod has discovered this treasure. It never diminishes. In fact, it makes his life richer every day. Here’s an amazing fact: The God who made us loves us enough to tell us how to live life to the fullest. He hasn’t left us to our own devices, to figure out the best way to live. His love doesn’t abandon us to do whatever we think is best. No. He shows us the way. He reveals it to us in the Scriptures. Rod wants you to experience the same joy, the same meaning, the same growth and spiritual abundance that the Bible has brought to my life and the lives of others through the centuries.

Sadly, some people never start digging. They’re immobilized by the nay-sayers. Those negative reports, those nasty rumors become imaginary barriers. They prevent folks from taking possession of the bounty that is so readily available. Many of God’s children live as spiritual paupers when they could be rich. Everything they need and more is just a little dig away, but they subsist in scarcity. What a tragedy!

The purpose of this book is to help remove those barriers and let people get to the abundant treasures in the Scriptures. Rod's passion, his mission in life is to help people grow spiritually, as lovers, friends, and followers of Jesus Christ. He believes the Bible, along with prayer, faithfulness, and Christian fellowship, is one of the best tools around to help people develop a mature, powerful spiritual life. It breaks his heart to see precious people of God languish in spiritual poverty because faulty philosophies keep them from drawing on the resources at their finger-tips.

Rod prays that it will be a tool that empowers you to uncover the amazing treasure trove we know as the Bible.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the reliability of the Bible. The author addresses many of the common accusations leveled against the Bible's trustworthiness and provides understandable and persuasive answers to them. He writes in a very warm and accessible style that is easy for the average lay person to understand. It is well-worth reading and sharing.
