Cousin Beth and Izzy bring Christmas to Emily's apartment even though it's August and over 100 degrees! Brent has disappeared and Emily hasn't been able to reach him by phone for several weeks. She guesses he's off on an assignment and can't make contact for safety reasons... or can he?
This short story takes place a few weeks after the end of Book 6, "Once Upon a Dime" and can be read for free on the author's blog.
Perry Elisabeth Kirkpatrick lives in an undisclosed location outside of Phoenix where she and her husband chase their four little boys and an escape-artist dog. They don't chase their cats, however, because cats hate that. She is the author of "The Kitten Files" mysteries, "The Accidental Cases of Emily Abbott" spy series, and multiple short stories.
In addition to her writing, Perry enjoys graphic design, playing a number of musical instruments, and watching movies that make her laugh.

This was a very short, but fun addition to this series! I hope the rest of the books release soon so I can continue the series without the fear of meeting a major cliffhanger.
5+ stars (7/10 hearts). Ahhhh! This was such a good story. I loved seeing Brent’s & Emily’s duo-POVs. Poor Brent’s reaction to Emily’s texts was hilarious... and I loved loved loved the ending. :D So sweet!
A Favourite Humorous Quote: ‘Don’t they teach you to withstand all forms of pain in spy school?’ He murmured to himself, realizing that was exactly what Emily would have said if she’d been there. ‘I can neither confirm nor deny that,’ he whispered. ‘But I can tell you they don’t give proper training on the intricacies and variabilities of different microwave brands.’
2024 reread Delightful short story. Fun to see Emily, Izzy, and Beth all together, not to mention Brent.
2023 No, it's not August or Christmas. Do I care? Nope! Short but so much fun to read this story again.
2019 A short, but fun visit with Emily Abbott. And Brent. The idea of Christmas in August was fun, and this short story had me smiling many times. (Added enjoyment because the author took a book I’ve read and turned it into a Christmas movie. I could totally see it!)
Okay, this was the absolute cutest thing ever! I loved Emily's dynamic with Izzy and her cousin Beth, and it was fun to see more of Brent's POV again. ;) I loved the little hints of possible things to come in season two, and I think now I need to celebrate Christmas in summer sometime. <3
So, so cute! <3<3<3 The Christmas-in-August theme was fun, as was seeing Beth and Izzy again, but Emily and Brent's concern for each other after having to be apart was the best ever! Those two are the absolute cutest, even if they don't know it yet. :) There was just a little that I didn't understand, like why Emily was back at the coffee shop after everything that happened in book six, but I'm assuming things will be cleared up in the official second season. Also, wouldn't it be great if we could just write our favorite books into movies? ;)
Darling story! I love the Emily and Brent stories and this one has to be one of my favorites. It’s so lighthearted and then so humorously sentimental. Technically it’s Christmas in August in the story, but I put it on my shelf for Christmas because it gives all the feels. :)
Ahhh this was too short, but super sweet! I loved everything about it! :D I love the Christmas-in-August idea. I think I should have done something like that since this year has been so odd. :P And like I've said a thousand times, Brent and Emily are literally the best everrr!
This Emily Abbott short story was SO much fun! I got really excited when the author teased it and later posted it on her blog, especially because I just recently binged and enjoyed the whole series. This tie-in short story definitely didn't disappoint!
I loved seeing Emily hanging out with friends. And seeing Brent on a mission. And the hilarious and agonizing miscommunication that ensues! I felt really bad for poor Brent when
Am I the only one who really wants to see Brent's point-of-view in the sequel series? Because I enjoy it so much when he gets an occasional scene of his own! There was only one in the main series, but I think it was my favorite of the whole series.
Grinning like a fool again! Yes Christmas in August that’s such a great idea. I felt like it was Christmas and it made me miss the season. And yessssss developments of a relationship. 🙂↕️🙂↕️🙂↕️ Been shipping you two from the beginning. 😂 And having a Brent POV for half the book hehe I didn’t know I needed it till now 🤭🤭🤭
This was a short, fun read! I know I read it out of order, but I still loved it. Beth and Izzy were so energetic! I loved seeing those two together. And Brent's reaction to Emily's text was amazing! I loved that part. 😊 The Christmas in August aspect was fun, too. Needless to say, I really loved this story, and I can't wait to read more of this series!
Edit: After read it a second time (this time, in order), I just love this story so much more! Beth's entrance was epic, and I love how Brent was called a globe-trotting spy. I mean, of course he's a spy, but the globe-trotting part just sounds extra cool on there. 😉
“Right Number” is a fun Christmas-in-August short story (which you can read for free on the author’s website). I read it after reading book 8, so it took me a little while to go back in time and remind myself which character knew what back then.
My favourite part of “Right Number” had to be Brent. It was so sweet to see how worried he was about Emily.
Definitely a sweet story for anyone who enjoys the Emily Abbot series.
Quotes:
“She was typing in full, Emily-like sentences, so he hoped that meant she wasn’t currently under duress.”
“‘Thanks for the best Christmas in August I’ve ever experienced,’ [Emily said.] ‘Let’s be fair—it’s probably the only Christmas in August any of us have experienced,’ Izzy said.”
Oh wow. This was such a sweet short story and yet so funny too! I also really liked how it switched between Emily and Brent, as I think there is only one short scene in the first six books where the story is told from Brent's point of view. It made nice change and Brent is still really funny even when he's alone. I really enjoyed this story!
This is absolutely adorable!! I loved it!! So typical of Emily and Brent, and I loved the unique decision to have Christmas in August!! 😍 Can't wait to see more of these two!!
A fun, quick read, no matter the time of year! It seemed a little slow to get started, but it was well worth it!! Makes me glad I didn't read it until bk. 7 came out :D
Super cute and I love the idea of Christmas in August...actually, just Christmas anytime just for the sake of it. I totally want to watch the movie they were watching since I've read the book and know how fun it is :P
I enjoyed this story. It's about an impromptu Christmas in August party, a missing friend who is a spy and some text messages. I look forward to reading other stories by this author.
Never let it be said that any of the awesome Emily Abbott books didn't pique my interest.
This super cute little short story had me from the first line. I love how a certain Someone nearly panicked and frantically tried to decode a message that wasn't really there, and how Someone managed to keep in touch and comfort Miss Dickens (boy, I think Brent's rubbing off on me 😂). Fans of this amazing series, don't miss this installment of the Accidental Cases of Emily Abbott!
Ok, I fangirled waayyy too much over this little gem. Everything about this was pure gold! From the fun Christmas in August theme to the phone conversation- I just loved this so much! I had no idea I needed this in my life.
Just the perfect thing after having just read Once Upon a Dime and wondering when their submerged feelings for each other were going to surface. An utterly delightful read on a Christmas Eve morning. Thanks!!
