Unikanie hordy wścibskich sąsiadek o morelowych, lawendowych i brzoskwiniowych włosach.

A pleasant novel about a grumpy old man who finds redemption at the hands of a ten year old girl and a ninety year old woman. It's not my usual reading material, however it's easy to read and has charm. Worth a read.

. . . growing old means seeing others die.

My neighbor works at what we used to call an "old folks' home." Though I believe there are now more enlightened, politically correct names in usage, the words still mean the same thing - a place where the elderly are housed while they wait for death.

The hero of this book, Ferdinand Brun, is a healthy eighty-three-year-old who dreads going to live in such a place. He fears being infantilized and turned into "Old Pappy Marshmallow." He will do whatever it takes to keep his apartment, thank you, even if it means cleaning. Or, in his case, hiring someone else to do the cleaning.

Brun is something of a grumpy old man. And while my neighbor tells me stories of how her aged residents "lose their filters" and say whatever possibly offensive thing comes to mind, almost like a case of age-induced Tourette Syndrome, our Monsieur Brun chooses to be harsh and abrasive in an effort to keep people at bay. That way they won't miss him when he's gone. His daughter lives far away, His grandson is a stranger. His only friend is his Great Dane. And now . . . she's gone, along with his reason for living. His one attempt to end it all ends in failure and utter disaster. He becomes embroiled in a war with the building's concierge, and could end up losing control of his own life.

Things are not looking too good for this cranky old fart. Luckily, friends (and neighbors) turn up at the most unexpected times, and our crotchety protagonist is about to be rescued by a lonely ten-year-old girl and a vivacious nonagenarian.

So, why three stars and not more?

There is one plot point that is a bit far-fetched. Another problem I had was that all the characters speak using the same voice. There were a few pages of undedicated dialogue, and I could honestly not tell who was saying what - the young girl or the octogenarian? But, I'll chalk it up to a translation thing. On the whole, the good points of this novel outweigh the bad.

This book is charming and full of life. These are characters you'll enjoy getting to know. There's a sweet and happy ending.

And there's dogs.

Eighty-three-year-old Ferdinand Bruns has been a curmudgeon his entire life, and old age and a divorce have not improved his disposition. He and his Great Dane Daisy are loathed by most of the other residents of his apartment house in Paris — especially the domineering concierge, Mrs. Suarez.

The slovenly Bruns is in danger of being shipped to a nursing home if he doesn’t improve. Naturally, this being a light-hearted novel, he’s assisted by two sprightly neighbors, 10-year-old Juliette and 92-year-old Beatrice Claudel. But Bruns is so disagreeable and ungrateful that it was hard to really care whether he gets rescued or not. Unlike Carl Mørck in Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Department Q series, Bernadette Fox in Maria Semple’s Where'd You Go, Bernadette, Renée Michel in Muriel Barbery’s The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Balaclava College President Thorkjeld Svenson in Charlotte MacLeod’s Peter Shandy mystery series, or other great curmudgeons in literature, Bruns really doesn’t have any redeeming qualities. All he has is his misanthropy. And that’s not enough to make him — or this novel — interesting.

I really hated the main character - not just a grumpy old man, he came across quite frankly as a sociopath. Narcissistic, petty, mean-tempered, he has thought only of himself for his entire life. His poor wife and daughter, his treatment of both for the last four decades is terrible! Even half way through the book he is thinking of ways to hurt someone he doesn't like - and only discounts murdering her, hurting her husband, and killing her dog, because he doesn't want to go to jail! I didn't find this book charming, or heart warming at all, although it certainly was droll in places. I thought he was a thoroughly nasty person who didn't deserve the kindness of his neighbours, and what predictable changes we saw, were too little too late for a redemption arc.

Sorry, just couldn't get past how terrible a human being Ferdinand is, and getting inside his head was honestly quite unpleasant.

I'm not too sure what to think about this one. The plot and main character reminded me of A Man Called Ove, which is one of my favorite books, but Out of Sorts didn't reach the heights that Ove did. The book did get better as it progressed, but the writing was very choppy, and, thus, confusing; the disjointed feel may have been a result of translation, though.

I enjoyed how easy of a read this was, but none of the characters were too believable. Juliette was just far too advanced and mature for her age, and I wanted to like Ferdinand more than I did. He was endearing in some ways, but I couldn't get past how he treated others, especially his wife.

Overall, a quick, pleasant read but nothing too memorable.

I find it interesting that a number of other people who have reviewed this book disliked the main character. Hated him, actually. Not me. Yes, he was undoubtedly a grouchy old curmudgeon, who sometimes goes out of his way to be offensive to other people, but there's something else to him, too. There's plenty of pathos. He's lonely, without even realizing it. He has his dog, and that's all he thinks he needs... until she's gone. Then he isn't even sure if life is worth living.

But he learns otherwise. He's an octogenarian, but it's never too late to change. Never too late to learn the meaning of friendship, the value of family, and the redeeming quality of love.

I loved this crusty old guy, I loved the little girl who befriended him, and I loved this book. I didn't read it in its original French, but I suspect that this is an excellent translation. Even in English, it has that certain "je ne sais quoi" quality of good French literature.

Elderly men seemed to be the choice of many last year and this is another one with 82 yr' old Ferdinand taking star billing. He is a crabby old man whose favorite companion is his dog Daisy. As his strange behavior accelerates his daughter becomes concerned. Will he end up in a place he doesn't' want to live? Luckily for him a young girl and older woman will come to help him out.

A fun easy story, delightful at times, poignant at others. My only complaint is that the tone seemed all the same, sometimes it was hard to discern which character was speaking. Still a good first novel that just needed some quirks worked out.

A promising premise let down by poor execution. 2/5 stars.

This review was originally posted on my book blog at: https://clairehuston.wordpress.com/20...

I saw this on NetGalley and was persuaded by the blurb. I’m greatly in favour of books with older main characters, particularly when they’re vibrant, active protagonists. I enjoyed Muriel Bradbury’s The Elegance of the Hedgehog and Jonas Jonasson’s The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared (extra props for that title!), and I was hoping that Out of Sorts would be in the same vein.

Unfortunately, this book was both disappointing and frustrating because I could see a good story lurking behind the poor execution.

Rather than a coherent plot, the story is a string of increasingly implausible episodes. I’m all for suspending my disbelief, but the author needs to help me do so by setting up coincidences well in advance and with subtlety. There’s none of that here. One absurd event follows another, everyone seems to be related to each other, and characters routinely act in ways that no-one sane would dare.

On the character side, I liked Beatrice. She was an intelligent, busy, feisty woman in her 90s. Shame the other characters were either unlikeable (including the lead, grumpy old man Ferdinand) or unbelievable (Juliette, a ten year old who talks, thinks and writes like a wise woman in her fifties).

My other big gripe was with the dialogue. Or, rather, the lack of dialogue. The characters don’t talk to each other. They are put in the same space and monologue in a vacuum. Long monologues. All apparently without moving, pausing or as much as blinking.

I don’t think the stylistic issues arose in translation. They are too consistent and many. I imagine the translator did her best to carry the style of the original over into English and shouldn’t be blamed.

Overall: a good idea, sadly underdeveloped.

I feel somewhat guilty giving this one star, since there wasn't anything I out-and-out hated about this book (the way I have other one-star books), but there just wasn't anything about it that I particularly enjoyed, either. Since this was translated from French, I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt that things like the overblown dialogue and choppy pacing are either a fault of the translation or more typical in French literature. All in all, though, this just wasn't the kind of book I was expecting based on the publisher's description. I was expecting something cute and poignant and sort of lightly heartwarming, but instead it's more of an absurd farce that's trying to also be cute and sweet. It wasn't completely terrible, but it just kept hitting all the wrong notes for me.

I was reading this book because it was on sale from audible.com and was about an old man alleged to be somewhat crotchety. I am 70 and occasionally aspire to being somewhat crotchety. So I thought I would try it out. So I tried it out for about two thirds of the book. Our hero was extremely crotchety for almost the first half of the book. He then reversed course for reasons that I somehow missed. And the book somehow tried to become humorous which I also somehow missed. And then it occurred to me that I did not need to finish this book so I didn't. No doubt one star for me.

Something Lost In Translation

I kept wondering why this book was written in such a stilted, almost artificial tone. Every character's voice was so alike that a little girl's conversation was indistinguishable from old man's. The crotchety protagonist was unbelievable. The precocious child's warm feelings for him were unbelievable. The elderly ladies' attraction to this grumpy old guy was unbelievable. The neglectful crabby old coot's inexplicable fall into love at first sight (through peephole, no less) was unbelievable. The story line seemed cut from cardboard and uncompromisingly banal.

And then I discovered this was a translation from the original French.

Surely something vital was lost in translation?

I can offer no other theory.

I don't know what to say. This book didn't work for me. I struggled with all the characters. Too far fetched and unbelievable. Some plot lines were absolutely absurd and almost gave me headaches.

But...but...I am known for not being fond of these type of stories. I may have just been the wrong audience for a great book. I found this positive review in case you want a different opinion.

Utterly charming! Just utterly charming! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found I could not put it down. I was late to an event because I had to finish it...
Ferdinand has never been an agreeable man. He was a contrarian in his youth and has been consistent in this practice through his dotage into his eighties. His habits have ultimately proved himself suspect to banishment for his own "good" to a retirement home by his concerned daughter who lives out of the country. He is at the mercy of Madame Suarez, boss of his apartment complex, and avowed person to his eviction. He is at a loss though, his beloved dog Daisy was tragically killed through suspect circumstance, and she was his will to live. Ferdinand attempts the unthinkable and finds support in a young girl and clever ninety something Beatrice. Madame Suarez does her best yet Ferdinand finds his life utterly changed by the two new female inhabitants of it. It took him awhile to get there, but Ferdinand finds his happy ending.

This was a bit weird. After figuring out that it was a translation from French, I figured that was a part of the reason. The book always held my interest in that I wanted to see what would happen next. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was good and different. It was also the first novel published by this author. i also got to read this for free because it was offered through amazon that way. I believe it was
a pre-release. So definitely worth what I paid for it.
