The Road From Death: School of Rebirth and Reincarnation

Rate this book
How do ghosts keep busy when they aren't haunting anyone?

This is the story of a man named Noah.
He dies in the first chapter.
And that's where his story begins.

Follow Noah's childlike spirt through the School of Rebirth and Reincarnation as he attends occult classes, haunts the living, and learns how to live again. All who enter the school must learn from their previous lives to guide who they will become.

Do you want to be born again as a new child?

Or would you rather possess a living human and live their life?

Or be born as an animal, or a demon, or linger on as one of the undead?

The road from death is more dangerous than it seems, and even the dead must fear what scheming plots the Trans Dimensional Department really have in store for them.

Fans of the supernatural, the surreal, and the macabre will love the terrifying mysteries waiting for them on the other side.

Special edition with full page illustrations.

What early readers are saying:

This is a unique take on what happens when a human or animal dies, especially with one character in particular who finds out he is special in ways he could never imagine. It is a horror story, with a little comedy and mystery, and a lot of suspense to it.

This is a book very enjoyable, with some thoughts about life and death that will make the lector think about their own beliefs. Excellent book with a new kind of plot and well written dialogues that make the action very fluid. I highly recommend this book!

From the very start, this book pulled me in and kept my attention. It really makes you think and wonder what happens when we die. I appreciated the full descriptions of Noah, the professors, demons and other characters in this story. I could visualize what was happening while reading. It is certainly a different way to look at death and souls. Well written and one of the more interesting books I've read yet.

Former neuroscience researcher, born again horror writer. During my studies, it struck me as odd that I could learn so much about why humans behave without understanding the intricacies of human nature. It occurred to me that I learned more about the depths of human experience from reading Dostoyevsky than I ever had from my text books, and I was inspired to write.

I love the way the author can create such awesome stories. Her characters are believable and human the situations they get into are not what you'd expect

You die. Your life is assessed to decide if you are worthy of rebirth.

If you are worthy, you spend 6 years being educated (and occasionally haunting the living world).

Finally... Rebirth may be as a slug or a cat or as a human.

You need to be worthy. You need to learn to make your next life more worthy.

Interesting theory of life and death.

An incredibly enjoyable trilogy. There are a few lines within the book where words are doubled or sentences
if read as is, do not make sense. A bit of editing, maybe. It did not hinder my enjoyment of the story,
and I look forward to reading more of Tobias Wade's writing.

There's good news for everyone: Death is not the end of everything. You don't cease to exist, you're merely alive in another dimension/world. Noah has seen ghosts as long as he remembers but never knew why. Now he's had a very unfortunate car accident and finds out that he's a Chainer; an old soul who has travelled the cycle of life and death many, many times. From 110 billion people, only 7 and a half people have found their way back, so Chainers are envied even though he can't remember anything else than his last life. Just as everyone else, he is now restored to his 12-ish-year-old self and has to go to school and study things as demonology, transhumanism and necromancy, in order to find a way back. But first, they have to pass the weighing of their soul where not sins and good deeds divide and count but the manner you lived with passion, intensity or purpose. Noah finds both friends and enemies in his classmates and teachers and soon discovers that all is not what it seems ....

I won't say much more about the contents because this is a book that you have to read. It's a brilliant fantasy setting of a world that is meticulously designed and created in minute details. Not only the amazing creatures, demons, beasts, zombies, ... (everything you've ever imagined is found there or in Netherworld) but also the laws of nature and the habits and living circumstances are so vivid and credible. Some may find the introduction into this world a bit too long, but I think it carries the story and gives an explanation for things that happen later on and in the future. The 2nd half contains more than enough action and adventure to keep the book balanced. On top of that, there are very beautiful drawings between the chapters.

I received a free ARC through Booksprout and this is my honest review.

Has anyone ever told you that you can rest when you're dead?
They were lying.
Dead souls still have one final job to do: they must learn to live again. And there's no better place to do that than 'The Mortuary, the School of Rebirth and Reincarnation.'
There are many different ways to walk the road from death. You can study Necromancy and learn to possess a living human, be reborn and grow from scratch, or even animate yourself into the Undead.
Others prefer to connect with nature in their Transhumanism classes, discovering their spirit animal which will guide them into a wild new life.
There are even those who favor Demonology, the foul practice of summoning from the Netherworld. Stranger still are those who don't mind shedding the their mortality to be born again amidst those monstrous ranks.
All who enter the Mortuary must search their past lives for meaning in order to guide who they will become.
The School of Rebirth and Reincarnation is a supernatural series about zombies, demons, vampires, ghosts, and all manner of unspeakably awful things.

This is such a wonderful story.
So very cleverly written.
It is a bit of everything in this one.
The newly departed have to enroll in this school to learn the best way for them to return to the "living" plane of earth but only if they don't fail the Weighing which is like pre-enrollment.
The Road From Death has Demons as servants for teachers, Magical Beasts, Zombies and Harpies. There is a creature so fearsome that even the Demons in the Netherworld fear it.
I love everything about this.
The characters and world building are amazing.
I can't wait to read the next one.
Recommend reading!!

What starts off as a compelling horror story in its own right takes an abrupt twist, becoming something that can't seem to help courting Harry Potter comparisons, albeit never quite favorable ones. Though the tropes become more cartoonish, the macabre ones don't fully disappear, leaving me very confused on the intended audience or even genre. Also confusing is a relentless wave of exposition dominating nearly the first half of the book. It's unclear how much it, as well as the A-turned-B plot from the first few horror-centric chapters, will come back into play.

Fortunately for readers who stick it out, an intriguing and ominous plot does develop, suggesting the original premise was more than just a throwaway to give the audience whiplash. Thematically, there's some potentially interesting elements about political abuse of power and the loss of ignorant innocence as loss of life itself, but oddly doesn't seem to delve that much into the titular theme of death other than as an aesthetic.

Tobias Wade meet J.R. Tolkien meets J.K. Rowling

What an enchanting take on the theory of Life After Death.

Here we have the newly departed enrolling in school to learn the best way for them to return to the plane of the "living", that is of course, unless they fail the Weighing and cannot enter the school.

The Road From Death has Demons as servants for teachers, students and townsfolk alike. It has Magical Beasts, Zombies and Harpies. There is a creature so fearsome that even the Demons in the Netherworld fear it. The villain is proven to be not so villainous and the Matriarch not so pure as she appears.

I enjoyed this Book 1 of the School of Rebirth and Reincarnation series so much, that I have pre-ordered Book 2. Happy reading. Annemarie

Noah is a very good person, a sweet and mysterious old man who can see ghosts and other paranormal creatures. Only a good person would sacrifice himself to save another person. This is the beginning of his new life, or death?. He is going to attend The Mortuary, a special school for souls of any kind, animal or human. And here is where his adventures began.
Who is telling Noah the truth about demons? Professor Salice or The Matriarch? Are demons implicitly good, implicity bad or something in-between?
This is a book very enjoyable, with some thoughts about life and death that will make the lector think about their own beliefs. Excellent book with a new kind of plot and well written dialogues that make the action very fluid. I haghly recommend this book!

This is a unique take on what happens when a human or animal dies, especially with one character in particular who finds out he is special in ways he could never imagine. It is a horror story, with a little comedy and mystery, and a lot of suspense to it. If you like monsters or mythological creatures, it has about every single one you can think of. There is even a touch of necromancy. The characters are very likable, at least the important ones, and you may even find yourself feeling sympathy for an imp or other creature. The world-building is very imaginative, and the story gets rather intense and action-packed as the main character (Noah) finds himself the center of something bigger than what everyone thinks is reality and questioning who to trust to fix things.

This book didn't take long to establish a few characters, then introduce some magic into the story. From there it quickly takes off into the creative and unique afterlife that the author has imagined. I was entranced by the fantastical descriptions of characters and their motivations after death, as well as other creatures than humans who show up to participate. Importantly, the adventure and intrigue, kept me at the edge of my seat throughout the book. I can't wait to read the next installment.

I've never read a book along these lines before. I must admit, it was a little hard to get into at first, and there were some parts I would have liked a bit more backstory on, but Im hoping they will come in the next book.

Overall I really enjoyed it, was definitely different to things I had read before. Am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This story, that starts out as a straight horror story, is fascinating. It presents a unique and interesting idea about what happens after death and is very well written. The characters are super detailed and well developed and the story world is super unique. There are bits of horror, comedy, fantasy and more woven throughout this book. I can't wait to read the next in the series!

Tobias Wade does it again with his new book! Tobias provides an entertaining look at the afterlife, compete with a school where the recently departed can figure out the next steps in their new chapter. A mix of interesting characters and school lessons I kind of want to take, I flew through this book and highly recommend to others.

Quotable writing

Some reviews compare this book with the Harry Potter series. I’ll admit that there are similarities but nothing that really bothered me. The writing is exceptional and I really did highlight various quotes that I’d like to remember. I had fun reading this although it does get creepy. I’ll look for the next book in the series.
