Ever traveled down a winding, tree-lined road at night? These six horror stories take place in those “out of the way” miles off of the beaten path, not another car or house in sight. The familiar, comforting sounds of civilization are long gone, replaced only by an unnatural silence and sense of unease as you venture deep into unknown territory. Take a trip down the back roads with this collection of scary stories from Evan Camby, the author who brought you the award-winning "Walking After Tales for Halloween." Just remember to keep your headlights on—and don’t forget to check the backseat."Ghost in the Garden"-When a young nanny is hired as the sole caretaker of two young children at Weeping Gardens, a rural estate in northern Georgia, she discovers that someone, or something, lurks amongst the willows."abandoned"-A photography blogger is dared to visit Danbury House, the site of infamous unsolved murders, and she soon learns that the things she wants to capture on film...want to capture her, too."s o l i t u d e"-A novelist struggling with grief retreats to a cabin in the Hudson River Valley to complete a book and becomes locked in a battle for his sanity...and his life."Honeymoon"-American newlyweds traveling through the remote moors of northern England come upon an ancient, medieval village which holds a terrifying secret."The Outdoorsman"-This story follows a young, down-on-his-luck veteran of the Iraq War on what should have been an idyllic day hunting in his favorite spot. When he comes across another hunter, things change, and he has to rely on his experiences and instincts to solve a very big, very dangerous problem."Back Roads"-After getting rejected from his dream college and breaking up with his girlfriend, Christopher drives out to a spot in the country where he passed many happy days fishing as a young boy. Soon, he realizes that the warnings his grandfather once gave him about this place were anything but a joke, and he must dig deep to find the courage to save himself.

Wow, what a thrilling read. Six brilliant horror tales to absolutely enjoy! In "The Ghost in the Garden" a nanny stays forever with two strange little children. "Abandoned" is about the murderous ghosts of an abandoned house haunting a young photographer. "Solitude" has an author do his new novel under special conditions in a cabin in the woods. "Honeymoon" shows an American couple in the English countryside. What about the mysterious village they visit? "The Outdoorsman" is one of the best hunting stories I came across for a long time. "Back Roads" leaves you with a chilling creeper if there ever was one. The talented author combines all the eerie motifs you need into brilliant tales. Highly recommended stuff. Those are blueprints for intriguing and haunting horror tales.
I enjoyed these 6 stories by Evan Camby. Each one was unique. I liked Honeymoon and Back Roads best. My least favorite was Solitude. I would read more by this author.
This might just be my favorite collection of stories by Evan Camby yet! Each story encompasses that isolated, desolate, hopelessness of being lost and alone while also entwining themes of grief and loss. Additionally, many of these stories revolved around my favorite horror tropes: Haunted Houses ( The Ghost in the Garden and Abandoned ); Cabin in the woods ( Solitude ); and Purgatory ( Honeymoon ).
This is one of my new favorite books I’ve read. It was filled with stories you wish you had a campfire around to tell these tales! What she could do with a full length novel frightens me.
The characters were built so well that you were inside their minds feeling their fear as threats arose, their relief as they live. This was a masterpiece of well worded stories that when you turned one corner your mouth just fell open wide.
By the time your face was in place once more the author surprises you again. I may read it again just to make sure I didn’t miss anything as she builds everything in layers so you aren’t pummeled with information and backstory. I’ve read many skilled authors this one is going to rank right up there shoulder to shoulder with them. Although his irreverent and irrepressible attitude may just make her sparkle where the others sought to fit in. To me this is a must read!
another good Halloween anthology with six spooky short stories
I’ve read several of Evan Camby’s books and this one is no exception - they are good spooky stories which engage you and allow you to be in the shoes of the protagonist and live through his or her encounters with the supernatural - was it just a spooky story your grandfather told you about the coven in the red robes among the corn fields or was there more to the old man’s story?
A nice good scare for adults! So glad I found this author and her books.Anyone who enjoys a good old fashioned scary story will love this book and all of Evan Camby 's other books as well.
I absolutely love horror stories, especially short stories. With this form of writing, there are no wasted words and each word counts. I have enjoyed every book of Evan Camby. She never disappoints.
Great writing style. She can create a universe in a few pages. Stories are creepy and engrossing, but not a gore fest. At Halloween I am an absolute fool for Ms. Camby's short stories.
