The Unofficial Outlander Book Of Herbs II

Rate this book
As Jamie and Claire reunite, challenges surface that force them to explore other parts of the world. This includes familiar places like Scotland.. But also foreign lands such as Jamaica and the 13 Colonies. With each adventure, Claire is presented with new plant material by which to practice and hone in her medical skills in the 18th century without letting anyone know her secret. No longer considered The White Witch, healer or conjure woman, she heals soldiers, sailors, servants, and those on Fraser Ridge as a curiosity, a woman doctor who combines modern-medical treatments with herbal medicine. While her interest in botany and herbal medicine aids her in plant identification, Claire gets guidance from apothecaries and an Indian wise-woman who intuitively knows she is a fellow healer. Now you too can walk along with Claire Fraser through her herbal journey as she explores the plant material and their uses in the different environments that her and Jamie are cast into through their life's-journey. Learn how Dr. Claire Fraser and other characters are noted to use the 237 herbs described in Outlander books 4 through 7, which includes Drums Of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath Of Snow And Ashes, and An Echo In The Bone. Explore how they can be used according to reliable modern sources along with how to grow them in the urban and landless environment. To help you really submerge yourself in the history of herbal medicine and the sensory experience of the Outlander storyline, a garden primer is included with details on how to grow plants in a traditional garden space along with container gardens. Each plant is covered in detail by which its use in the storyline is described, how it can be used, its USDA Plant Hardiness Zones, and how to grow it. Anecdotal information is also provided, such as being endangered, when applicable. While some of the 237 "herbs" covered in this book will be familiar as culinary plants there are others that are not traditionally classified as an herb. In this case, if a plant is used by a human for consumption or medicine, it is defined as an herb. Defending this decision I revert back to Hippocrates who Claire was very familiar with and followed his idea of "let thy food be medicine and medicine be thy food": in her constant search for a vitamin C source. As with The Unofficial Outlander Book of Herbs, this book has its own backstory that inspired its creation, which is told by way of its unique cover design with symbolism and plant meaning.
