In a word... Wow!

Do you remember those books where you at the same time couldn't wait to get to the end to see what happens AND also Dread the ending because you don't want the book to be over... well that's this book and the entire series...

Amazing world building, exploding with characters, plots, action, magic, LitRPG elements, and just an awesome experience.

Cant wait for book 6!!!

MC is sexist.

The womwn are written in an incredibly sexist way. It has become steadily worse as the series has progressed. If a man had acted as the princess, the MC would have killed them instantly but because it is a woman he puts up with it repeatedly.

My only complaint is the book is too short

Wow. Where to start....
Star finally meets up with his real life friends, but so much more happens, and real life relationships come to the forefront. The whole evolution of the world comes as a mishmash of games you may have played and in game tactics are relatable.

Despite some reviews and opinions you may see, Star isn't a misogynist, he does respect the opposite sex and his friends of both sexes point out his relationship failings without needing to be asked, the group dynamic is great. BUT he is a young heterosexual male so there are bits where he obsessed about the female form, which is no different the banter or chat to any group of guys.

Can't wait for the next one.

This is such a great series!

I have been hooked from the very first book, and this book is no exception. Very action packed! Star puts up with no s#!t, but he is always looking out for friends, family, and the innocent. And I am so glad that his companions finally took a stand and straightened out this whole "harem " issue in no uncertain terms, for both the other characters in the series, and for the readers making accusations in their reviews of this book series. The book is a really good length and a lot happens that tests Star and his followers, they are literally fighting for their lives. I can't wait for book 6!

There were parts of the story that were really good, but they weren't enough to overcome the averageness of the rest.

In the previous books we were treated to more developed action scenes and conflict. This time around it felt like the author just wrote "do it fast" and "pile on" over and over. Besides that, we were also having large swaths of exposition throughout, even a couple of times where things were repeated later on in the book.

My biggest complaint about this though is that the story ends on the 74% mark of the book. That's 26% of fluff added to the end of the book!

Please hire an editor

These books start off pretty good, but the last one and this one have some continuity errors that make it difficult to enjoy. Also, just because IRL literally translates to "in real life," does not mean that you can do a find and replace. If I have to read " his in real life friends" in areas of "his friends in real life" or even just "his real life friends" one more time, I'm going to scream.

Epic read

Once again Cheek delivers. The way Star is being developed is how IRL should be. Knowing as many skills as you possibly can. The plot thickens as Julie's "loose" walls (pun intended) close in on trying to trap Star. Can't wait for the next.

A fine addition

This book is fine. I have the same complaint that I have for all the others in the series, way too much exposition. 2/3rds ish of the book is explanation after someone talks or thinks or looks at someone funny. It is a lot of tell with little show to go with it.

Awesome book, can't wait for the next.

I love the book and the in-game characters. The only issue I have is with the MC's long rants on bullying. We get it. He had a rough life, and hates bullies. It detracts from the story to keep having it come up. Otherwise, great stuff.

Best in the series so far. Wow, you get a lot of value and a lot of action when you start this one up. Wow! I really have to hand it to the author for keeping so many threads and plot lines going and still keeping everything tidy and moving along so nicely. I took a long time with this one because I really wanted to enjoy every page despite all the action and temptation to burn through it. I really do not think anyone else writes quite like Jason or cover life in a hardcore pro or semi pro guild like he does.I can also so I also pick up a few bits of history or information about historical technology development that was not known to me before. Am I going to stick with series, heck ya! Would I suggest it to others? Absolutely!

Good read

Nice story that helps flesh out the world. Only down side I had is it seemed to drag on a bit. Maybe too much explaining? Also the shit that he is getting piled on with its getting a touch predictable. ie bad guys all outlevel him so he has sneaky scheme to stop them. Over and over. Also nightmare stats are bull. Pay to win is what that is even though author says that is not happening. If you give up/fail your nightmare quest then you should lose the stats. Period. Why get a boost for being a loser? I thought that was the whole point of paying the money to get a chance at being Elite. If you fail the quest line you shouldn’t get anything more than 50% keep that last 25% for the truly good players.

This series will absolutely keep you turning the pages from start to finish. His attention to detail for the fight scenes and MCs out of the box thinking to survive over whelming odds are a true masterpiece to behold. Read this series if you love the LitRPG genre!!

Entertaining

Jason does a great job allowing the story to unfold and flow to the point of the reader getting lost in the The World too.

Bang?.... nah..... KABOOM for the bucks!

"Action packed" is too feeble a descriptor for this book. There are so many significant scenarios that you'd expect them to be spread out over multiple releases. But one thing leads to the next and before you know it badassery is committed all over the place.

One of many favorites in this one is the crazy beotch ex. Made me think of "Blues Brothers" fun. And Helgath? You go, girl! But I really love that the storyline is reconnecting with Broken Fang".

The more I read LitRPG, the more I realize I'd be unlikely to enjoy gaming. I certainly wouldn't want to reside in any of the worlds I've read about. It's beyond me how anyone would sign up for abusive PVP. Amazingly, I've found I can enjoy reading about characters that are having fun gaming. This author manages to tell an incredibly complex story with worthy characters who are having way too much fun and living large. He actually creates PVP scenarios that don't make quit reading and go on to something else. His honesty and clarity relative to less than admirable human behaviors and pettiness isn't always easy to read through, but mostly because we've all been there, seen that IRL.

Bottom line: Read this, have fun, and post a 4+ Amazon review because this author deserves them perks.

Internally Inconsistent

There are certainly good aspects to the world building, combat, and characters. But, the author just isn't very smart, and absolutely fails to make logical sense even within the fantasy rules that he has created himself. Often the author forgets about key equipment and abilities he has given the main character, only to 'patch' them back in one or two books later. The way that a Nightmare Start works for the MC and every other player of the game, is completely different. The way that experience gain works for the MC and the evil players of the game is, unsurprisingly, completely different. The way that thousands (and I do literally mean thousands) of players are willing to happily act as evil henchmen patrolling enslaved cities and murdering children instead of playing the game... WTF. The way that there are supposed to be millions of players in the game all on the same server, and yet less than a hundred thousand seem to exist within the game world... Ugh. I wish I was unintelligent enough to gloss over how jarringly unrealistic the story is, but alas, I'll have to give up on this series.

Another great entry.

Cheek continues a trend of quality storytelling in this 5th instalment of “The World.”

Our protagonist faces ever increasing challenges as they make their way across a new continent.

The world building is fun and makes you wish you could play the game.

The one aspect where the story falters is the Villains. In the best of stories a villain is the hero of his or her story, but The World keeps throwing evil villains with no depth at us, dividing players into “good” or “evil” feels lazy and repetitive after the third or fourth group of unique people slaughtering NPC’s for entertainment.

Otherwise, the story shines and I look forward to the 6th instalment.

Another great entry in the series. There's a lot of in and out of game stuff that flows well along with the team dynamics. As an original raiding bard in EQ, the call out to bards weaving songs was appreciated. I think I still have three overpowered fingers from EQ raiding days. Even when I was weaving 4-5 songs it was done with three fingers :)

But back to the story, some cool parts and there's a lot there to move the story along. Semi-spoiler here but I did feel like we did not get to what the "goal" we thought this book was about based on where the other ended and where this one started. Made it feel short which is crazy based on the actual length of the book.

Looking forward to the next one.

Another exciting chapter in Startum’s semi noble story! ;)

I continue to enjoy Star’s story, his many friends and supporting characters. Seeing a betrayal by a close friend like this is something mirrored in real life all the time and many PvP games encourage subterfuge as it adds to the drama, excitement, and the story.

Startum’s plans within plans are revealed at a good pace and he has a very tactically driven, reactive mind that I enjoy reading about. His ‘be a decent person’ gaming style has made tons of enemies in other games that now seem to be coming for him! I am looking forward to seeing how they all pull off the next mission and get home before the incoming hordes!

Litrpg Standout

There is a good mix of challenging battles, humor, strategizing, and number crunching that makes this one of my favorite lot rpg series. The protagonist is powerful but unlike a lot of decent books where they have amazing luck or a rare overpowered skill he works through his challenges with planning, skill, and a ever-growing team of supportive guildmates and npcs. Its easy to get sucked into the story and root for Star and his friends as they try and gather enough allies to fight off a massive invasion and prevent rival guilds from sabotaging their alliance from the inside. Gamers will love this book.

Alert

I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.

So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Cheers

I was really impressed at the level of detail put into this book. Also I love how you don’t make the main character over powered and make it where there is actually something at stake during all of the quests. After all the hinting throughout the series finally Julie Bowen shows. I can see her becoming the main antagonist/rival for this series. I honestly can’t wait to see where Jason Cheek takes this. The only down side to this book was that it eventually ended. I honestly cannot wait for the next book to come out. So I have a request for Jason Cheek. Please pretty please get the next book out ASAP!!!!! I’m dying to read it!!!!

I like it

Still liked the first couple books in the series the best, this was better than the last one not as good as the first or second one. Had several laugh out loud moments, the storyline is still entertaining, not much character progression or furtherance of the storyline, book covers about 3 days I think, guy still hasn't made it to meet up with the friend he is trying to help from the start of the last book, it was action packed though and full of entertaining characters. Looking forward to the next one.

And the pace keeps moving along!

Jason keeps delivering a strong story with interesting plot development. One of my favorite elements of this series is the out of game byplay with twitch and lan parties, ect. It makes the characters real to me because these are things I relate too.

As for the story, there were a few things I saw coming...I think there was sufficient build up in previous books to pick up on it. I loved the way it was handled and presented though. It makes me impatient for the next book. Keep writing Jason!

Glad to be able to read this story

Continues a great storyline, which I have been waiting to read more of. Sad to hear that an author or group of authors in this genre would actively keep others work from being published. Thank you for not posting the names, because I would have immediately deleted all copies of these authors work(s), and would never open up a book description from any of those author(s) again.

This book covers 3 days - given that this is book 5, that shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone.

Star finally reaches fake Sweden (if I remember my book-map correctly) and proceeds to have issues with 2 cities.

I mean, how long does it take you to sack a city, hmm?

We get a little more info about who the enemy is (no spoiler there - I mean, look at the title).

I'm still enjoying this series, so I'll look forward to book 6.
