My anxiety? It's bad. Really really bad. It causes me stress, takes away my sleep, and honestly makes me wish there were a cure. If I could take a pill to cast it away I would, but alas life is not too kind.

I love reading self help books because they highlight an important fact: I am not alone.

These thoughts are not foreign, I'm not fabricating them, I am not suffering by myself. No, millions of people have anxiety and millions of people get through it everyday.

I am not alone.

One important piece I got from this book is that people with anxiety get into a habit of thinking their feelings are invalid or frivolous. I can't tell you how many times I've cast away my emotions because I believe I am over exaggerating. I learned that that is actually very bad lol. It's the resistance to feeling that exacerbates your anxiety.
It is okay to feel, it's okay to let go.

This book is pretty great, it goes into coping mechanisms which yup, I have em and the sources of anxiety such as genetic factors which *looks at father* definitely. The author has a method called C.L.E.A.N.S.E. which you can read more about when you read this book. Overall, I felt that this is a good guide and taught me a lot more about anxiety and the methods in which you can handle them. It provides you good skills to learn and grow from and I will definitely be purchasing this myself for whenever I feel hazy with stress and worry. Life is hard. It's okay to want to feel better and be better.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received a digital copy of this book back in September of 2019, when the world was very different from what we are experiencing right now, April 2020.

While I was reading I kept asking myself how much of the information contained in this book and how much of the techniques that describe coping and healing methods to tackle anxiety that was part of the “old world problems”, so to speak, will still be relevant right now and even after this pandemic has been beaten.

Personally speaking, I have been battling PTSD and social anxiety for a number of years and in the latter half of last year I finally found a way to work on them to the point that I was symptom free.

According to this book, though, my way was just a way of coping: I found a gym and a hobby that fulfilled me and replaced my anxious thoughts with feel-good hormones I got from working out.

The author makes a distinct difference between coping and healing. My way was only coping with it and therefore felt like it was being dismissed. I agree that people need to heal their past trauma and hurt in order to move on, but sometimes the anxiety stays, even after the wounds (mental and physical) have healed.

For me it was so much more than getting a good work out, though. I faced my fear of being in social situations and was able to overcome a good portion of that anxiety. I even made some friends along the way. Of course, it is different for every person suffering from anxiety, I just feel like the author had a little bit of tunnel vision when considering the unique differences each person faces in their own struggle with anxiety.

Another thing that bugged me a bit was the confusion I felt about the author’s stance on talking about emotions. Early on in the book it sounded like the author wasn’t on board with talking about emotions. One must heal them instead? Acknowledge them?

Later on, she states that talking about one’s emotions is a part of a healthy lifestyle. I may have misunderstood, but the point is that it was all a bit confusing to follow.

The major problem I had with this book was how it was marketed. The title says Emotional Detox for Anxiety: 7 Steps to Release Anxiety and Energize Joy, but most of the book was a sort of scratching the surface of explaining emotions, anxiety and what the author thinks about coping techniques; only the last few chapters were about the actual steps that were supposed to teach the reader how to detox and heal their anxiety.

With the drawn-out explanation about anxiety the reader gets to constantly be reminded that the steps to attain emotional detox are just around the corner or that those anxieties can be addressed with these mystery steps.

The chapters leading up to the detox part are full of lists. Lists of symptoms and thoughts and emotions and actions you may experience when one has anxiety. It was overwhelming and exhausting. Add to that the listing of other steps, I wasn’t sure what was going on.

Overall, as I said before, I’m not sure if and how current self-help books that were written prior to this new global situation can be applied to our new experience of anxiety and emotional healing, but generally speaking I wasn’t too impressed with this one.

It felt more like a very long sale’s pitch for a new method of dealing with anxiety than actually spending most of the book concentrating on providing good, feasible techniques to those who are dealing with anxiety. It’s a pass for me on this one.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This book is a fantastic straightforward guide to managing anxiety and understanding it and what triggers it.
This book is divided into 3 parts and provides 7 steps in which you can support yourself and help control your anxiety better.
I found this a very interesting and useful guide and will be refering to it again and again.

Overall, this book was lack luster. By the time the author got to the '7 steps' I'd read through so much fluff that I was starting to skim. The chapters go off on tangents of -past clients, unneeded side stories, and the author trying to prove herself to the reader- way too often. It became cumbersome to decipher what the actual steps were and how to preform them.

Obviously I picked this book up because I have anxiety and am interested in ways to release it, I don't need 7+ chapters on why I should read this particular book or why I should trust the 7 steps will work. Just get to the meat of it, and cut out all the 'here's how I developed this method' nonsense.

At some point in the future I may revisit this book and skip to the back where the steps are literately listed, but for now I need to detox from this over wordy read.

While this book had helpful information, it also felt highly repetitive. It gave helpful tips as far as feeling and utilizing your emotions to cope with your anxiety on an internal level. However, the author makes a point to say that most "normal" coping mechanisms people use to deal with anxiety aren't useful in the long term and that her C.L.E.A.N.S.E method is most helpful. When it reality, her C.L.E.A.N.S.E method is just another way to cope with anxiety, just in a way that she considers to be the "correct" way. In reality, I feel like there is no "wrong" way for people to handle their anxiety, as long as it doesn't involve self-destructive behaviors.

Why manage anxiety when you can C.L.E.A.S.E it?

I have anxiety. I’ve struggled with it for quite some time. So, when I saw this book in a Goodreads Giveaway, I didn’t even think. I entered the giveaway. Imagine my surprise when I won! Instead of dealing with anxiety, this author offers ways to cleanse yourself of anxiety with an emotional detox. The first 8 chapters of the book focuses on anxiety and emotional detoxing. It includes:

- Explanations of anxiety and emotional cleansing
- Symptoms of anxiety
- Causes/Sources
- How emotions are processed
- How to prepare for an emotional detox

The second half of the book focuses on the C.L.E.A.N.S.E. method, which basically is a 7-step method for dealing with anxiety. The steps include: Clear, Look Inward, Emit, Activate Joy, Nourish, Surrender, and Ease. Emotional detox allows you to remove aspects of your life that prevent you from living your life to the fullest.

I found this book to be informative and helpful. It offers solutions that include acupressure, breathing techniques, changing your posture, using your voice, refocusing the way you look at things, and other mindful exercises that can relieve stress. Each technique is explained thoroughly so that you know exactly why and how it helps with anxiety.

The format and writing are easy to follow and understand. The chapters are organized and formatted in a way that you know exactly what to expect. Furthermore, each chapter ends with a recap that highlights the most important information in a convenient list.

This is an excellent resource for people who struggle with anxiety and are looking for more mindful ways of working with it.

I received a copy of this via Netgalley for an honest review.

I started this with the hopes of getting a better understanding of something that has been apart of my life for as long as I can remember. After finishing it I now feel like I have that as well as the tools to break the cycle. While reading this it felt as though the author was inside my head and giving words to things I never could. I have never felt this seen and heard in my life without being triggered and am truely so excited to make this C.L.E.A.N.S.E a part of my every day life. I recommend it to anyone interested in a different method to dealing with Anxiety.

This book was received as an ARC from Adams Media in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I was waiting for a book like this to come out because we always get questions on improving mental health and with a donation for our self-help collection we are always looking for new titles that have the latest research in improving mental health especially managing emotions. Sherianna Boyle came up with some clever sayings especially the CLEANSE acronym ( Clear, Look Inward, Emit, Activate Joy, Nourish, Surrender, and Ease) in describing the 7 steps. I also love when an author incorporates a personal experience in each of the steps because in my opinion the reader can easily grasp on to learning the concept rather than relying solely on explanation. This book will definitely be popular with our community and will be heavily circulated.

We will consider adding this title to our Self-Help collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars..

this was okay, i guess. i was gifted it by a family member who knew my anxiety has been spiking lately, so i was excited to give it a try.

the first 100pgs of the book is dedicated to breaking down anxiety and redefining it within the framework of the CLEANSE method. while it was interesting to read about anxiety in this way, it got a little annoying after a while, simply because it was taking away from time spent breaking down the CLEANSE method.

the author talks a lot about how coping methods aren't healthy and should be avoided, and how CLEANSE will help you heal and digest emotions instead. but once you get through the first part and finally make it to the actual method breakdown...it's just another coping method. and a lengthy, intricate one at that. it gets a little woo-woo at times, too, with the focus on breathing (i.e. answering questions with your breath), vibrations, and energetic frequencies. not woo-woo enough to turn me off of it, but it did give me a giggle at some points lol. to me, the CLEANSE felt more like a grounding technique than anything.

idk. i think i'll try incorporating the CLEANSE method (or at least part of it) into my life and will come back to this review if i start to see/feel any results. i didn't feel much change as i tried it out while reading, but tbd on that i guess. the yoga flow that's described at the end of the book is really nice though.

also, the book had a lot of language around cleansing, detoxing, eating habits, working out, food, etc. kind of expected with a title like "emotional detox," but could be upsetting to anyone who struggles with ED or body image. i tended to skim the sections where she brought up extended food/eating/exercise metaphors.

I feel that people with anxiety feel that how they feel doesn’t matter and society tells them to just get over it. I think we are programmed to cast away negative emotions and just rise above it all. That’s great but easier said than done and sometimes that isn’t the best coping mechanism. Sometimes we need to take a real look at what is causing the anxiety. This book is filled with tools to break the cycle it focuses on what the author calls the C.L.E.A.N.S.E The acronym ( Clear, Look Inward, Emit, Activate Joy, Nourish, Surrender, and Ease) describes the 7 steps involved and the author incorporates a personal experience in each of the steps with ways to make it a part of everyday life.

I recommend it to anyone interested in a different method to dealing with Anxiety. It lets the reader know its ok to feel bad and gives steps to learn to let it go.

This book has solid coping mechanisms and looks at triggers and the sources of anxiety such as genetic factors and trauma. I found it to be a very interesting read. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

Sherianna Boyle describes herself as a spiritual teacher, adjunct psychology professor, and yogi. In Emotional Detox for Anxiety, she presents her theory that anxiety is caused by how we react to and resist emotions rather than just feeling them. She then teaches readers her C.L.E.A.N.S.E. Method, a 7-step emotional detox process to “treat the underlying causes of painful emotions.”

Although I’m sure following the C.L.E.A.N.S.E. could be helpful for some readers, I found the author’s arguments generally unconvincing and the book tedious. Having tried the described C.L.E.A.N.S.E. [Clear, Look Inward, Emit, Activate Joy, Nourish, Surrender, and Ease], I felt minimal benefit. The author claims that most people will not keep up conscious breathing or visualization practices because they can take months to feel the benefits, yet she expects readers to make her C.L.E.A.N.S.E. a daily practice. She claims it will make a difference within minutes, which I did not find to be true for me.

It didn’t help that the unproofed ARC I reviewed was poorly written with too many clunky metaphors; I hope the published version has benefited from a thorough, skillful edit. Also, this is a personal pet peeve, but I cringe seeing periods used in an acronym.

The book includes a glossary of Emotional Detox Terminology, sample C.L.E.A.N.S.E. routines, and a bibliography in the back matter.

The author mentions that readers can download C.L.E.A.N.S.E. guided meditations from her website; note that the audios are available for purchase, which might also add you to the author’s mailing list.

So much unscientific, untested, unproven stuff in here with some breathwork and visualization techniques (both actually proven to reduce anxiety) tossed in to make sure there is something here that will make people feel better enough to think that the whole process is valid. That's just my honest reaction to the CLEANSE process; the book is horribly repetitive and about 100 pages longer than it needed to be. If author wanted to add filler, the book could have used actual anecdotes of people who actually used and found the process helpful. I could go on and on but don't want to waste more time. As a person living with generalized anxiety disorder, I was hopeful but instead felt my time and money was wasted. Instead of this book- pick up one on meditation and breathwork or better yet, go take a class.

I just have to start by saying that I've tried several books on anxiety and have never finished any of them or did not find them helpful at all. I felt very drawn to this book.
My anxiety has been a little more intense recently and I felt that I really needed something to help. I found this book by scrolling through anxiety titles at the library. I found that this title was available as an audiobook and felt that would be better for me.
So far, I'm feeling very comforted by the information in this book. I tend to rush through these types of books and just want a quick solution for how to get the anxiety and worrying under control. I forced myself to be patient with this book and make sure to take it all in. The information has been very validating.

I do get why some people find this book repetitive. I happen to like the little review at the end of each chapter. It's a lot of information to take in and I found the little wrap-ups very helpful.
A phrase used throughout this book was to "digest emotion" and I really liked that.

Some points/quotes that I found helpful were:
*cultivate calm
*trigger explained--something sets you off and you can't let it go
*going raw--forgoing engaging your triggers
*signs of a trigger: heat, mind chatter, quickness to react
Some points that resonated with me:
*picking up on other people's feelings/anxiety
*use chronic worrying to self-soothe
*relinquish attachment to anxiety
*worrying is over-processing your feelings
*slow down
*focus on the good
*worrying--you've allowed your mind to bully your body
If you're being triggered, it is likely that what you're thinking is not completely true.
This is really the only book about anxiety that I've been able to stick with and actually apply the techniques discussed. I found it very comforting overall.

This is probably the book I've struggled to review the most in my time on NetGalley. The concept was good and I really wanted to like it, but I found it challenging to really engage with content until I understood what C.L.E.A.N.S.E was. While having all the background information and going through things step by step is important to truly and fully get people to engage with the method and not race ahead without the tools they need. I think C.L.E.A.N.S.E needed to be defined right on the first page so people could then read with it in mind.

For those wondering if C.L.E.A.N.S.E will work for them. Simplified, the method appears to be a combination of mindfulness and positive thinking. It will work better for those with a more open mind, but what the author points out about the way we think could be valuable insight to anyone.

As someone who also has some qualification in this area, I would suggest this book is a good read for people seeking alternative treatment from anxiety or related disorders (such as depression, OCD and PTSD), as I do believe the concept of understanding, acknowledging and changing thought patterns can have powerful effects; and the author demonstrated many examples that proved it. But for those experiencing clinically significant levels of anxiety, they may find this book more in their scope once they have sought professional help and got more of a handle on what they are experiencing.

Emotional Detox for Anxiety by Sherianna Boyle was a very interesting read. She shares her seven steps to release anxiety and energize joy. She has an acronym for her 7 steps: CLEANSE – Clear, Look Inward, Emit, Activate Joy, Nourish, Surrender and Ease.

Sherianna incorporates her own personal experiences to help the reader see the process in action.

I found the recaps at the end helpful. Admittedly there were times I read the recap and decided which chapters to focus on. The recaps will also be helpful as you implement the steps and want a quick refresher.

Most people feel anxious at times.  Some are able to manage anxiety without becoming chronically overwhelmed, while for others it is most debilitating. If you are anxious much of the time and would like that to shift, you might want to read this book.  

The author presents and elaborates on 7 steps that help in reducing anxiety.  They come under the acronym CLEANSE.  These are clear reactivity, look inward, emit, activate joy, nourish, surrender and ease.  Each of these concepts is clearly described in the book. 


The author explains what anxiety is, where it come from and how to understand it and thrive.  This title is geared toward the layman but mental health professionals may also want to take a look.

"Emotional Detox for Anxiety: 7 Steps to release anxiety and energize joy" by Sherianna Boyle is another self help book. This book is for those who struggles with anxiety. It will help you to cleanse your soul and flush out all negative feelings. Worries, stress and self-doubts are very common nowadays.

I am glad that I have came across this book. Author has started the book very well by first discussing about anxiety and its sources. This book will walk us through anxiety detox and its benefits. This is an amazing book with rich knowledge. Everyone should at least read it once.

You will definitely thank me for recommending it to you. I can't tell how free I am feeling. I will not allow negative feelings around me now. Book is written in a simple and comfortable language so everyone can read it easily and it will be worth your time. Go ahead with this one without thinking twice.

If this book has helped you in anyway, I’m happy for you, but it did almost nothing for me. While I’ve read a few of the reviews saying they were irritated that the authors dives deep into what anxiety is and it’s effect on people, that was the one thing I truly appreciated. There is something about reading your signs and symptoms from someone else that makes it feel much less lonely. Her strategies though are a little too out there for me. They are most likely suggestions offered by many others in the psychology/psychiatry field (I cannot actually attest to this, I’m not in that field), but she puts it in very “granola” language if I’m being honest. Again, if that’s how you see life, this may be helpful for you, but I need much more rooted evidence that isn’t someone thrusting their “method” on me.

Using the holistic C.L.E.A.N.S.E method, Emotional Detox for Anxiety teaches readers to overcome their anxiety by addressing it at the root.
Boyle's method is comprehensive but may seem like quite an undertaking for the already anxious mind.
Thankfully she outlines plans of action in step-by-step detail, so referring to this book in times of unease could be a great help. Even if you don't struggle with anxiety personally, this book can give you a better understanding of those in your life who do, so you can be more compassionate and helpful.

I have to echo other reviews in saying that this book was a complete disappointment. The first half of the book is literally defining anxiety and convincing the reader that her revolutionary C.L.E.A.N.S.E method will help them manage it. Unfortunately, I read most of the fluff before I realized that I wasted my time. I decided to skip ahead to see if this "revolutionary" system was worth 80 pages or so that I suffered through--it wasn't. I would recommend this book if you enjoy reading a marketing pitch or you need an author to essentially say, "Yes, Dear Reader, you ARE living with anxiety" for 100 pages. If not, skip it.

While I found this book helpful, I also found it a bit confusing. The "Taking the Steps" part of the C.L.E.A.N.S.E method (what the book leads up to) was hard to understand and use. I think maybe if used in a clinical setting/one on one with an instructor it would work well, but just reading it from a book I honestly had no idea what I needed to do for all the steps. And since each step builds on the other I quickly became lost and frustrated. There is an important takeaway, so if just reading it for helpful/thought-provoking information to better handle anxiety from a different perspective then it's a good book.

What can I say about this book? For someone who has suffered from anxiety all my life, this book changed the healing game for me. As I read it, I realized that I never actually knew how to process my emotions resulting in built-up anxiety. I also realized that my "coping" over all these years was never actually doing anything and only making my situation worse. This book changed my life in terms of how I process emotion and also see anxiety from a different perspective. Instead of seeing it in a negative light, I am able to see it, identify it, process it, and health and learn from it. The CLEANSE method is a great way to approach anxiety in a healthy way. Highly recommend this book.

The best element of any self-help book is the constant validation that your feelings of anxiety are not wrong or fabricated, and most importantly that you are not alone. I can’t put into words the feeling of relief I get when I use books like this one to help reduce my daily anxiety. “7 Steps,” reminds you that it is okay to feel the things you are feeling, and shows you how to cope with your overwhelming emotions using the author’s method, C.L.E.A.N.S.E. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with anxiety and wishes to know how to understand it and work to live with it.

This book was a surprising read. Usually self-help books are hard to read and take months to finish if they are finished at all. Sherianna's Emotional Detox book was a breath of fresh air. I actually was able to enjoy, understand, and finish her book.

The chapters were not overly long and split up into digestible sections. It was fun to get to take each section and add to it every day. Each chapter builds upon the previous and gives you time to really learn the C.L.E.A.N.S.E method.

This was an enjoyable read. It was something I can relate to and something that will actually help.

2 feels generous. The concept of this book feels rooted in personal theories of the author and not in science. Even still, when I tried to read it and just consider different concepts can help different people, the book takes over 200 pages to make unclear points about how to approach anxiety. The theory feels like it was squeezed into an acronym to make it clever but doesn't actually need that many steps.

Emotional Detox For Anxiety is a winner! There’s not a soul on planet earth who could not benefit from incorporating this daily practice into their lives. Sherianna Boyle teaches us HOW to process our emotions. What a relief it is to know our emotions are not good or bad but are in need of being digested and processed. The author fills much (and loses time) pages trying to explain anxiety in a kinder-approved reading, so if you suffer from GAD you can find this extremely anxious-inducing rather than moving to the point. I’ll apply some of the concepts explained here, but overall? Disappointing book.

This book really helped me. I’ve been dealing with PTSD symptoms since my car accident that almost killed me. The first half was more helpful to me then the second half but perhaps if I read it slower and really appreciated every step it would be more effective. I would still recommend to people struggling with anxiety. I think there is some benefit and that for me was worth it.

So much promise, so much disappointment. This book provides really no tools or the “how”. It’s merely just says “sit with an emotion”…I’m going to indicate on Goodreads that this sentiment is a spoiler, because this truly is the end-all, be-all of the entire book. Sit in your feelings. Go, do it now…somehow.
