A graphic novel of friendship, family, and what happens when you defy and exceed expectations. Donut (middle name: The; last name: Destroyer) has a heart of gold and incredible strength. She lives in a world where everyone is born with a special ability and can choose whether to develop it for good or evil. Donut has just received the best news of her life -- she's been accepted to Lionheart School for Heroes! But her parents are the most infamous villains around, and her best friend, Ivy, can't understand why Donut would choose a life of boring heroism and ruin their plans to cause chaos. Donut is determined to prove that, despite her last name, she's meant to go her own way and be a hero. Meanwhile, Ivy cooks up a plan to get Donut kicked out of Lionheart -- and back on track to villainy!
"Ugh, I know! These disguises are ug-ly. If it means we can snoop around here without any fuss, though, the wedgie these pants are giving me is worth it!"
I’ve had the genius idea that maybe graphic novels would be the right way to go to get me out of my reading slump. I have never been more right.
This was a lot of fun and super cute. The art is absolutely fantastic and reminds me of Steven Universe. It was eye-popping and attention getting. The story was the same way. I really hope we see more of Donut in the future.
If you could be a villain or a hero, which would you want to be? I think I would be a villain!
Like all of Graley's work, this comic is absolutely adorable, funny, and heartwarming. Donut is a villain who wants to go to hero school - it's hard enough breaking convention, as her parents are renown evildoers, but now her "best friend" Ivy is trying her hardest to ruin Donut's time at hero school in order to get her back on the villainous path. Donut is caring, hardworking, and totally determined to be the best hero she can be and it's just SO CUTE. This could definitely become a series and I really hope it does! Graley's comics have become a great source of feel-good-semi-spooky-fun and I need her to never stop creating.
A fairly decent fantasy adventure about good vs. evil, wherein our heroine, Donut, wants to go to hero school even though her best friend and parents are all villains. It's too juvenile and predictable for my tastes, but younger readers may get a kick out of it.
I found the ARC for this in our break room and I'm so happy I picked it up!! It was incredibly cute and definitely entertaining. Donut was awesome, and I loved her "evil" parents too. Overall, a very fun, quick read.

A DELIGHT! What happens when a legacy villain decides that they want to be a hero? Donut is from a family of famous villains and in a world where everyone has a superpower that they gone for good or evil, she’s expected to follow family tradition. This book is wonderful and teaches youngsters about identity, self-discovery, and following your dreams. Loved it!
Here is Donut! Her surname is The Destroyer… but actually this girl just wants to be hero!
After almost 2 years I finally had the chance to read this book! It was just on/off on Amazon, but finally I could buy it! I just love Sarah Graley’s work and I want all of them. Haha.
In this hilarious and inspiring book we meet Donut. Last name: The Destroyer. As you can see she is set for evil things… but this girl doesn’t want to! She wants to be good. She wants to be a hero. She wants to do good deeds and defeat evil. You can imagine that it didn’t went that well with the parents as they are the TOP dogs in evil (though you wouldn’t expect it given how they are, haha). I am still very happy that they let her go there. Not forcing her to go to the bad school.
Donut is a very sweet and strong girl (for real, her superpower is strength) and I was just rooting for her from the start. I always love it when people choose another path than one that was there since their birth. I loved that she wanted to be a hero. And I loved how hard she worked at school to show the people there that she was truly being good. Not just making masterplans to destroy stuff. When things seem to go south (due to a certain evil friend who isn’t approving of things) I loved that she had her friends to be there for her but that she also tried to make things right. Like with the statue. A lot of people would just have slunk away and hid, but not Donut. She thinks of an amazing plan.
I loved her new friends at the hero school, they were just the sweetest and the best friends. I love how they accepted Donut immediately into their group and I had fun seeing all the things they were doing or planning to do. Including a lot of clubs. Haha.
The hero school was fun and I wanted to dive into the book to check out the lessons as well. Become a hero!
I do have to mention the parents and how much I just adore that duo. They were evil, but also so sweet and hilarious. I just love their antics. And they earned even more points with the ending and what they did there.
I wasn’t a fan of Ivy. I can somehow see why she is doing these things, but I just wanted her to get the hint. Stay away. Stop ruining your friends life, you aren’t getting her back by doing that kind of stuff. Really. You are just hurting her. I get that Ivy is evil, but seriously, she was more annoying than evil. XD
The art was, as expected because it is Sarah Graley, amazing. I just loved the facial expressions and the designs of the characters. I love the details. I love the colours. I love everything.
All in all, Sarah Graley and Stef Purenins did it again! They made a wonderful, hilarious, sweet, inspiring and fun graphic novel that will be loved by everyone.
This is great graphic novel by the fantastic Sarah Graley! I absolutely love Donut and the message that is portrayed by this book. Donut is the child of two super-villains who actually wants to be a hero and is accepted into a school for heroes. I quite enjoyed the romp through this fun world and its wonderful characters. I really hope we get a second volume at some point!
This graphic novel is so much fun! Who couldn’t like a story about a girl from a family of supervillains who just wants to be a hero.
Donut (middle name: The, last name: Destroyer) lives in a world where everyone is born with superpowers. You just have to decide how to use them - good or evil. Donut’s parents are two of the biggest supervillains ever but Donut has decided she doesn’t want to be a villain. Her best friend Ivy has been planning their supervillain careers for years so it comes as a shock that Donut wants to switch to the dark side. When Donut gets accepted to Lionheart Academy (the first step on her road to become a superhero) Ivy tries anything she can to get Donut kicked out. However, Donut’s new hero friends are by her side and will use their powers to fight evil.
I love Sarah Graley’s illustrations. One minute her characters look super cute, with their faces bursting with glee and the next they’re all angry, with scrunched up faces that are on the verge of exploding. Donut is a really cool character who stands up for herself and what she wants to do with her life, even in the face of her ex-best friend and her super-villain parents who want her to be super evil. My favourite characters are Donut’s parents. They made me laugh every time they popped up because they’re super supportive but committed to being supervillains.
Donut the Destroyer is going to fly off the shelves and be incredibly popular with kids.
Donut lives in a town where everyone has a superpower. And everyone must decide if they are going to be a super hero or a super villain. She comes from a long line of super villains but she has no desire to do bad things - she only wants to do good. So she decides to seek admittance to the super hero school. Her parents are definitely villains but they only want what is best for Donut so they are supportive of her choices. Her best friend, Ivy, is different. When Donut tries to explain that she doesn't want to create chaos, Ivy refuses to listen. Donut is accepted at the super hero school. It is not exactly what she thought it would be - people know that she is a Destroyer and don't trust her. But she makes two good friends on her first day and then has to prove to everyone that she truly does want to be a hero and not a villain. The book has a lot of non-stop action but it certainly supports kids who want to make their own choices in their lives. It's funny and zany and just a lot of fun. Donut and her friends make mistakes but ultimately work together to save the day. They gain self-confidence and even a new friend along the way.
Not your average hero story and that’s what makes this one amazing! Such a fun and colorful graphic novel about not following in the footsteps of those before you. Donut doesn’t want to be evil like her parents, she wants to be a hero and do good in the world. Her adventures in her new school lead her to battling old friends and finding new ones that have her back.
This came inside of my friend's Literary Cleveland club member party box, when they had their virtual celebration of the organization. Everyone got a comic from Free Comic Book Day. She kindly let me take a gander at hers. This first volume flies by, only dipping its tow into the world of Donut. It was cute and has a lot of potential for hero vs. villain antics.
This style reminds me of Scott Pilgrim and I see it trending a lot nowadays...
I gave this a 3 because Donut's parents are vampires and Donut has a strong ability but I thought I she would be a vampire too! (Or a supernatural werewolf or something like that) She was strong but not what I thought.
This graphic novel style book for youth has a very funny premise: a kid whose parents are villains gets accepted into hero school, learning to do good in a world that might teach you otherwise! Great illustrations. Easy to read.
A daughter of Villains who wants to go to hero school. Her parent's aren't thrilled with the idea, her best friend isn't thrilled either. Filled with comedy or
A-MAZE-ING Book! It’s funny, sad and serious all at the same time! (That’s a good thing) I loved reading it and the people who make these books are very good as well! 5/5 An amazing book.
Donut is daughter of 2 famous supervillains, and much to their horror she is determined to become heroic. I assumed I could predict the broad strokes of story based on the premise alone but much to my delight I could not. What I got was a more emotionally nuanced tale of familial expectations, evolving friendships, and being true to yourself. Plus some good fight scenes and some legitimately funny gags.
Sarah Graley is, as always, on top form with Donut the Destroyer. The story of a young hero trying to break away from a family history of supervillainy, this book follows Donut through the first month of Hero school; making new friends, confronting old ones and trying to juggle a reputation that preceded them.
The book touches on themes around friendship, fitting in and being true to yourself no matter what with a hint towards there being a lot more to life than heroism and villainy. Not everything is quite so simple.
Great fun and great art; this is an excellent graphic novel and I look forward to reading (& seeing) more of Donut in the future! I only wish it had covered more time but I know there's constraints on the format when it comes to length.
