Newly updated with a fresh design and six new projects, The Crochet Book is both a perfect guide for beginners and an invaluable resource for more practised crocheters.
The Crochet Book (DK) by Claire Montgomerie is the ultimate reference book for crocheters of all abilities. This newly updated craft book has a variety of techniques and it is very easy to follow. It is a perfect hobby for those with a little more time on their hands.
There are previous versions of this book and although this is an updated version, I don’t think that there is a lot of difference for those with an older copy of the book. If you are new to crocheting or are interested in a book that covers the basics and a little bit more, this is one to look for. It is quite thorough and a great reference book.
❀ CUTE AND INTERESTING PATTERNS
What really stands out for me is the fact that there are lots of really cute and interesting patterns to choose from. Some are easier than others, however there are many photos to help with understanding the techniques. Also, the instructions are very easy to follow, which I find really important in a crafting book.
❀ PERFECT HOBBY FOR ISOLATION
Crocheting is a perfect hobby for isolation and The Crochet Book (DK) by Claire Montgomerie is a perfect place to start. There is something in it for everyone and is an invaluable resource for all skill levels. I am currently creating dishcloths, but I am definitely looking forward to making some fun Christmas gifts.
Crochet: Over 130 Techniques and Stitches is a great crochet pattern book full of creative projects. With a variety of patterns, techniques and ideas this one is good for both novice and seasoned crocheters. There is plenty within these pages to give you inspiration.
This book is full of tips and tricks and helpful sections discussing yarns and yarn colors, different hook types and other crochet equipment. There is a techniques section showing you how to work up different stitches. Also included is a section about blocking and seaming techniques and another part which shows you how to work up different textural stitches like rib stitch and shell stitch. There is also a section with information on how to embroider onto crochet. I could go on and on there is plenty within these pages to spark the imagination and to learn from or to brush up on your skills with.
I recommend Crochet: Over 130 Techniques and Stitches if you are looking for some crochet inspiration.
I received an e-copy of Crochet from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
First off I am an intermediate/advanced crocheter and have been crocheting for over 10 years and honestly, this is a great book for people of every skill level! Seriously I loved it and definitely plan to buy a physical copy to have for reference.
So I really love how this book covers so much and is a great reference book for beginners and experts. It covers everything from basic stitches, borders, yarns, color charts, beading, and projects for every level!
The projects all have bright and vivid pictures, as well as pictures explaining how to do different stitches it is really awesome! I already marked at least 3 projects I hope to start ASAP!
Thank you so much for the copy of this I really loved it!
I loved the colorful, attractive photos & diagrams. Both the written Instructions and photos were easy to follow. I especially liked the section on reading charted patterns, it was thorough but concise, making it easy to learn.
A great book for a beginner who wants to learn without all the fluff and extra comments in the average beginner's book as well as a seasoned needleworker who wants to refresh their knowledge. The patterns included are simple but practical and modern.
This book does a very thorough job of walking the reader through all the basic crochet stitches that will be needed for each pattern right off the bat. The patterns are clear and concise with excellent pictures. I absolutely can not wait to finish my current crochet project and start on a toddler sweater featured in this book.
A great resource for crocheters. This is perfect for beginners and I believe even the most advanced will find good information here. There is a large choice of projects and patterns. The illustrations are excellent.
Beautifully laid out and organized. Perfect for showing my tween beginners how to count stitches, what completed stitches look like, and much more. Also many easy projects in a nice progression starting from the simplest ones. This was a great buy for me.
An excellent, straightforward guide to crochet for the absolute beginner. The book starts with guides to basic stitches that can then be practiced on simple projects, then works up to more complex stitches and patterns.
This is one of the best crochet instructional books I've ever looked through.
Note: I would like to have known it was written in UK terms versus American crochet terms before glancing through. This distinction will be exceptionally helpful to new crocheters who are unfamiliar with the fact there are different terms for UK vs US.
The author/designer of this book goes beyond merely giving you patterns. We are given in-depth pictorial tutorials with each step. There are also yarn size guides, tips, a basic stitch dictionary, instructions for best finishing the projects and so much more. I've read many "learn to crochet" or "I taught myself crochet" type books that were much less through. This pattern and stitch guide is what I wished I had when I first began learning.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC and a chance to review this book.
I have been crocheting for over 40 years since my mother taught me when I was a child. Yet, I'm still interested in any crochet book that I see. Mom didn't know everything about crochet, and I have not explored all of it yet. This is a really fun book for the beginning crocheter to the advanced. The book is broadly divided into two sections, techniques and projects. The technique section does have some simple projects, though, that go along with the techniques that are near them. As is typical of DK books, this one is lushly photographed, both the techniques and the projects. I like that the introductory sections show all the various tools and implements mentioned. Makes it much easier if you're going to pick any up at your local yarn store! Each technique is clearly photographed, step by step, making it easy to see precisely what you need to do. I like how the book worked from basic knowledge to more complex ideas, from the simple foundational stitches to the intricacies of more complex stitching (e.g., intarsia and broomstick lace) and different shaping, like for motifs and toys. The projects are surprisingly varied and colorful. Many of the colors were not to my taste, but I know well enough how to substitute colors of my own liking. Projects ranged from simple scarves and bags to more intricate apparel and items for home decor… and more. While some projects look like something your granny might make (and, indeed, there are several granny stitch projects, including a turtle backpack!), others are surprisingly fresh and modern. At first, I wasn't sure if there were any projects in here that would interest me until I got to the sections on hand and feet coverings. I love the wristwarmers (I’ll be making some for my mom!) and the very pretty women's socks. If you enjoy crochet, whether beginner or more advanced, you might find this book adds some great techniques and projects to your crochet repertoire.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
"Crochet: Over 130 Techniques and Stitches" is a really thorough guide into the the techniques used in crocheting. The books starts off by going through the different tools and materials needed when crocheting and I feel like it did a really great job of explaining everything from the different types of yarn you can buy to hook sizes and yarn weights. I was especially glad to see a section that discussed yarn labels and the means behind the different symbols you'll find on yarn labels. The book then moved through the different crochet stitches and techniques and teaches readers how to read crochet patterns. I thought they did a really great job of laying out basic step-by-step instructions and they provided really clear pictures for each step. After each new step or technique the book actually provides a project that the read can accomplish using the technique they just learned. The techniques section was really great because it goes into everything you could possibly imagine. I was really impressed to see that they had a whole section, including projects, on filet crochet (laces), and even on crocheting with beads and using unusual yarns. The second half of the book is a projects section that includes everything from blankets, apparel, children's apparel and toys, and housewares. The projects do really great job of building upon the techniques learned and the patterns and instructions were really easy to understand. I've been crocheting for over 10 years and I found this book to be incredibly helpful and there were things in this book that I didn't know how to do =, such as crocheting with beads. I would hands-down by this book for anyone looking to learn how to crochet or anyone who already knows how to crochet because it's a great reference book. I am thoroughly impressed!
Thank you to NetGalley and DK Publishing for providing me with an e-arc of "Crochet: Over 130 Techniques and Stitches" in exchange for an honest review.
Crochet Over 130 Techniques and Stitches by DK Starts with a table of contents where instructional chapters are listed and then items to make are broken down into categories. Intro talks about how the book is made for all different levels and what is included inside the book. I am always looking for a different idea to use to make charity afghans for the agencies I volunteer for. Like how you can use their pattern but a different thickness of yarn and they tell you how to achieve the finished item. Love how different yarns are explained with pictures and icons displaying what is on a typical label. Yarns, hooks, accessories, techniques where they show you with pictures and contrast colors of yarn, basic stitches are shown. Examples of what is being discussed then moves into the projects themselves. Each patterns starts with a title, summary of the item and stitches used. Hook size, notions and tension/gauge is also given along with yarn and amounts. Finished size is given and pattern is easy to follow and understand. Level of difficulty is also shown at top right hand corner and tab on page turning side is given a color for expertise level. Pictures of how to work the stitches is also shown on next pages. I like the beginner ideas because they make good gifts. Other techniques are also discussed along with further projects moving up a level. Projects for baby, child, women and men. Like scarf and hat section the best. Love sample stitch patterns because they NOT only show you the finished piece, charted piece and written rows of how to make it. Glossary is included at the end along with crochet terminology. An index, acknowledgements, about the consultant are also included. X reference book for your library! A KEEPER! Received this review copy from DK via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion. #Crochet #NetGalley
Crochet is a technique and tutorial reference with included projects. This is a reformatted and updated 2nd edition (original pub. date 2014) due out 15th Sept 2020 from Penguin Random House on their DK imprint. It's 320 pages and will be available in hardcover format. As almost always with DK's offerings, I was blown away by the detailed, clear, and solidly expert photography. Every photo is well rendered and easy to follow. The supportive text is also clear, spare, and easy to understand.
The project tutorials are attractive and cover a broad range of difficulties, styles, and materials. Each of the tutorials contains a finished color photo, techniques used, project size and tools and supplies needed followed by step-by-step instructions. Most of the tutorials also contain multiple process photos which make construction and details easy to follow. Measurements are given in American standard and metric (SI) units. Projects are listed thematically: blankets & cushions, home & gifts, hats & scarves, gloves socks & slippers, clothing, toys, and bags.
At least in the eARC I was provided for review purposes, the revisions and additions in the second edition are highlighted in red text in the index and represent about 30% new content. It's probably worthwhile to have a look even for readers who have access to the first edition.
This would make a superlative selection for home hobbyists, learners, makers spaces, library use, or in a classroom/workshop setting. Five stars. Very well done.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I received an eARC from Edelweiss+ and Penguin Publishing Group in exchange for a fair and honest review, and I’d like to thank them for the advance copy.
As a seasoned crocheter of eight years, there isn’t much out there that I haven’t seen or explored. I really enjoyed this book and the aesthetic. The photographs were not only informative and helpful, but the style was gorgeous to look at. Overall, a great book for a beginner or advanced crocheter! The patterns were clear and detailed and I think that is very important when you’re reading about a skill rather than watching a video of the skill.
I really appreciated the variety of patterns in the book-- there was everything from jewellery to market bags to home decor to clothing, and so much more! There is so much variety with the patterns that it is hard to list them all without my review being too long.
I know it’s strange to be planning out holiday gifts in the middle of May but we’re in a pandemic and I have my eye on a few patterns for gifts already including: the Chunky Rug, Book Cover (of course!!), and maybe even a pair of Nordic Fingerless Mitts for myself.
I really enjoyed the section on edges and lace/mesh stitches and they gave me quite a few new tricks to try and to add to my repertoire. I am really excited to buy a physical copy to try some of the patterns and to have for reference for stitches and techniques that I don’t use often. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at crochet, this would be a great book to begin with!
I have the current DK Crochet book that was published in 2014. I just got it for Christmas last year. When I saw there was a new crochet book coming out, I absolutely had to request an ARC and was prepared to get yet another crochet book.
While this is a fantastic reference for both beginners and experts, it's pretty similar to the book I already have. I liked the step-by-step instructions and quality photos. There's a good variety of projects. I like the way certain projects are introduced after the techniques used for those projects are explained. I did wish there was a bit more information about Tunisian crochet.
Overall, if you already have the 2014 book, it's not entirely necessary to buy this one in the fall. Many items appeared to be the same and most of the included projects have not changed, If you're a beginner or someone who was thinking about buying a crochet book and don't already have the 2014 version, it's worth the purchase if you're willing to wait a few more months. However, it's very important to note that the book I have is written in US terms, while this one is written in UK terms, which confused me at first. For example, what was called a treble crochet (UK term) is what I know as a double crochet. That may or may not make a big difference for you, especially if you are a beginner.
What a great resource book this is!! I learned to basic crochet over 40 years ago from my mother-in-law, then self-taught with the help of any books I could find! (Internet was not a “thing” then!). I feel that I am always learning and wanting to learn...and this book did just that for me! I enjoyed all the resources they provided from types of yarns and hooks to techniques. The pictures were awesome and extremely helpful. The patterns provided to “show off” techniques were great, user friendly to understand, and at an easy level. This will help a new crocheter so much......I wish I had it when I was teaching myself all those years ago! I loved the variety of patterns in the Project sections of the book too. I see myself making many of these patterns and making use of new crochet stitches I learned from this book. I am often asked to “teach” someone to crochet and I start them out and give them further resources. This will be one that I recommend because to a true crocheter, it is always great to have a printed resource easily available! Thanks to NetGalley and DK for the opportunity to review this book in return for an honest review, which this has been. #NetGalley “Crochet”
I love the very beginner friendly nature of this book. DK has long been a standard for helpful guides, and their crochet books always have great photographs and helpful tips - this one is no exception. It has an excellent walkthrough on different crochet hooks and tools - which is where I happen to geek out so I love that broomstick and Tunisian are introduced! The patterns in this book are approachable projects that don't seem too gaudy or home-crafted looking. For beginners or those coming back to the craft it's best to start with small items to build up that confidence to keep crocheting! I appreciate that the book reflects crochet's move into the modern world of home decor and wearable garments. There are tons of great designs that reflect a lot of trends in crochet and designers on IG and Etsy and other social media platforms. The photographs are helpful as are the project ideas using each pattern to make practical and pretty items! If you love to crochet or are new to fiber arts I think you'll find something to enjoy in this book!
If this beautiful and colorful book doesn't get you motivated to crochet, I don't know what will. This is a well-rounded book that covers all the basics (types of yarn, washing instructions, color choices), all the stitches (very basic to pretty complicated) and then has lots and lots of ideas.
I will admit that while I remember how to knit, I can't seem to remember how to crochet and the diagrams in this book weren't enough to get me there. I had to look up a few basic stitches in video format so I could really follow. Once I got the gist of it, it got easier.
The projects in this book are really beautiful with a very wide variety and skill level. There are clothes, pillows, blankets, bags, jewelry items, toys and more. I loved so many of the ideas that I wish my experience with crochet was strong enough to do them all now. I can't wait to work my way through this book.
with gratitude to netgalley and DK publishing for an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
This book is all you need to start, or enlarge, your journey into Crochet.
In addition to the advertised 130 techniques, the book also has the following projects:
• 4 blankets • 3 cushions • 11 items for your home or gifts • 5 hats from infant to grown man • 4 scarves • 4 gloves • 5 socks/slippers • 4 children’s sweaters • 2 women’s sweaters • 1 women’s dress • 8 toys • 8 bags
I was disappointed in the small number of projects for women, especially that none had even an XL size. However, the owl cushion is so cute—as is the polar bear comforter in the toy section.
If you are looking to Crochet something for the children or grandchildren in your life, this book is an excellent choice. Children’s clothing, including infants, and toys are the focus, with many charming patterns from which to choose. All patterns are clear and have photographs. 4 stars!
Thanks to DK and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
If you're interested in crochet, this book is a good place to start. It discusses tools, techniques and yarn weights and uses. Great pictures help in the learning process. The stitches are shown clearly and reading a pattern is explained. There are projects for each level, also beautifully illustrated. I wish I had read something like this when I first started, I struggled with the concept and had no idea that the weight of the yarn as well as the hook size greatly influence the outcome of your project. I requested and received a NetGalley ARC to peruse and offer my opinion freely.
I am a beginner to crocheting and am still in the process of learning all the stitches, different yearn types, etc, (have completed a few basic amigurumi patterns). This is an absolute wonderful tool for any skill level! It has the basics like stitches and yarn types, but also projects for every level. All of the projects are followed by beautiful pictures and easy steps to follow. I will definitely be adding this to my collection!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!
As a self-taught crocheter with many years of experience, I would have loved a book like this back then. In this second edition, the step-by-step directions are clear and well-illustrated. In addition, as each stitch is taught, the reader is given projects that will allow them to implement the skills they are learning. The book also includes various projects that are wonderful for personal use or as gifts.
If you’re a beginning crocheter or would like a great gift for a beginning crocheter, this is the book to get.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by the publisher and Net Galley. However, the thoughts expressed are totally my own.
As a semi self taught Crocheter, I am still learning about patterns, how to read them and what level they are for. However, this book is a great book for beginners/ self taught who still need to learn a few things. I liked how the book was laid out with step by step of basic stitches and moving to slip stitches. This is something I am not super comfortable with but after reading these steps I feel more confident trying them out.
The patterns are not the same you find in most how to books. It is nice to see something a little more challenging and different.
This would make a great present for someone who is interesting in learning how to Crochet.
Crochet: Over 130 Techniques and Stitches by Consulting Editor Clair Montgomerie
319 Pages Publisher: DK Release Date: September 15, 2020
Nonfiction, Crafts & Hobbies, Crochet, Yarn, Home Furnishings, Toys
The book is divided into three sections:
Tools This section discusses yarn, hooks and other equipment. I like how each type of yarn is described in detail with the type of fiber and textures. There is also a buying guide and a reference to the type of labels for care and maintenance. She also includes a list of the different types of hooks from wooden to plastic to metal and their sizing.
Techniques This section goes from basic stitches to crochet toys and felting. I found out that I hold my hook in the knife position as opposed to the pencil position. She provides example patterns for the different type of stitches. A few examples include how to chain stitch a necklace and bracelet and a washing cloth with a double crochet stitch. I am hoping this book will help me finally make a perfect granny square which has eluded me for so long. She also explains how to follow pattern directions and symbols. I have to be honest and say the lace and wire instructions are still beyond my skill level. I hope to one day be good enough to work with such delicate materials.
Projects This is the bulk of the book and includes projects in these categories: Blankets and cushions Home and gifts Hats and scarves Gloves, socks and slippers What to wear Toys Bags Each one of the projects has detailed directions along with picture and the colors and yarn used to finish. I cannot decide what will be my first project. I really like the baby blanket with small granny squares. I would love to make the structured baskets to store some yarn skeins in when I am working so they don’t roll around the floor. The chunky rug would look great on any type of hard floor surface. The broomstick lace shawl looks so light and airy. I would really like to work up to making the lacy cardigan. It is so delicate. I have an amigurumi kit for my grandson. I may be able to make them with the toy instructions in this section. The patters for the bags are amazing. I cannot decide which one is my favorite. It is either the everyday bag or the diamond granny bag.
The patterns are written in an easy to follow format with the all the information you need to make the perfect project. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys working with crochet and yarn.
This book contains the information you find in most crochet references plus some good information you don’t often see such as beaded crochet and rag-strip crochet.
There are patterns interspersed throughout the technique half of the book. The second half is a variety of patterns. The patterns are... disappointing. Some feel very dated, and I was surprised to be able to see stuffing between the stitches in most of the toys pictured. One of the few that interested me is the Nordic Fingerless Mitts which add a flip on/off mitten top to a pair of fingerless gloves.
Overall, I think this would serve ok as a reference, but I would look elsewhere for patterns.
Ideal for the beginner and intermediate crochet lovers, this book covers all the basics and then some! Easy to follow instructions, great advices, and simple yet lovely patterns to try out everything you learn. I will start a few of these proyectes very soon! I’ve been crocheting for years but I still found it an excellent resource and I know I will consult it several times in the future.
[The lovely people at NetGalley provided me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks!]
The graphics in the book are beautiful as always for DK. I found the stitch graphics really easy to follow and there were great tools and tips throughout the book. I highly suggest this to anyone who is interested in learning crochet or improving their craft. I learned a few things. I think this book would be best in print due to the colorful images, but I'm sure it would be lovely on a tablet as well. Happy stitching!
Thank you to Netgalley and DK Publishing for my ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is not a read once book. This is a necessary reference book for any crocheter. The pictures are clear and easy to understand and follow. You will want to look through and find creative border and edging ideas for blankets you crocheted, knitted or even on fleece fabric. I also really liked the section on corner to corner crochet which is a great blanket maker and not often seen in other crochet books. Excellent for beginners and experienced crocheters alike.
