Whenever I see a new Kane and Alton book out, I find it incredibly difficult to contain the excitement that bubbles. D. K. Hood is a masterful storyteller and knows how to keep her audience thrilled and coming back for more! Whisper in the Night is the sixth part of Detectives Kane and Alton series and its a series I've come to absolutely love and look forward to. Riveting, menacing and incredibly thrilling, this book is a wonderful addition to the series!
Fifteen-year-old Lindy Rosen is troubled by recurring nightmares, where she keeps seeing a man in her bedroom watching her sleep. After finding no substance in her claim, her parents put it down to her overactive imagination. But when Lindy is found missing the next day, with signs of a struggle in her bedroom, her parents know that something bad had happened to Lindy. Withing hours of involving the Sherrif's department receives a video of Lindy bound and gagged with a challenge thrown at Detective Jenna to find Lindy before the time runs out. Jenna’s team work around the clock to try to find Lindy before the deadline, but time runs out, and Jenna receives a devastating message. The killer has made good on his promise. He’s playing a dangerous game. And no one knows what his next move will be. Soon another of Lindy's classmate Amanda goes missing with another challenge thrown at Jenna. Will she be able to save Amanda in time? Why is the kidnapper-killer sending her messages?
The plot of this story is excellent. All Kane and Alton storylines are so dark and menacing, you literally feel that tingle in your spine. The setting, the atmosphere, the mystery, the case - everything is such a thrill to read! y only grouch is while I really like Jenna, she comes across as a really weak detective. Most of the times, she's seen piggybacking on Kane's decisions. I find her to be a tad bit unoriginal and not really the brightest detective. Having worked as an agent in the past, I assumed she would have had the skills and confidence to be a good detective and an able Sherrif. But in most of the chapters, it's she asking Kane what to do, how would he solve the case - basically she brings little to the table and its mostly Kane and Wolfe doing all the heavy-lifting (physically, mentally and intellectually). She's good at managing her team, delegating tasks and is brave but when faced with a challenge, she comes across as a novice with no experience always asking Kane and Wolfe for advice. I think I could do with a more confident and thinking-on-her-feet Jenna.
I love all the other characters in the series - D. K. Hood also builds a very good suspect pool, to keep you guessing till the very end. I think the series could do more with a few more secondary characters. The sheriff's department is extremely underwhelmed with just Webber, Kane, Wolfe, Rowley, Walters and Maggie. They could use some help without having to call in Blackwater detectives every time there is a mad man running around in Black Rock Falls.
I like the idea of Kane and Alton getting involved, and the chemistry between them is great!
In the last book, there was talk about Kane remembering the bombing in his past being the work of an insider and I was hoping that that sub-plot would be addressed, but I didn't see anything of that sort mentioned.
Despite all this, the story leads you to high-tension, nail-biting moments that are signature D. K. Hood. Looking forward to the next one already!!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & D. K. Hood for an arc!
