Bernie and the Time Lords

Rate this book
Get ready for an adventure that will take you beyond the boundaries of time!

For his latest assignment, Bernie is sent to Planet Flo to investigate a disruption in the manufacturing of a glowing powder the gods want for their world. Bernie must convince the mine owner to reopen the mines before trading can resume, but as he travels to and from this world, every visit to Flo gets stranger. The people he’s negotiating with keep forgetting who he is. Their society is becoming unrecognizable, and their technology is advancing by decades in just a few days.

Bernie’s job has become incredibly difficult. An unknown force is undoing his progress and propelling the people towards a dark future. If the gods don’t get their glowing powder, they will wipe out the entire civilization and repopulate Flo with another species, one more capable of producing the dust they want.

The only way Bernie can save the people of Flo is to stop the entity that’s undermining his efforts. But Bernie has no idea what it is. Could it be a threat from another universe? Could it be a new species evolving among the natives? How do you fight an enemy with the power to manipulate time?

As the fourth installment of The Universe Builders epic-fantasy series, Bernie and the Time Lords packs the same amount of humor and wit while amping up the mystery, plot twists, and adventure.

Grab your copy now and watch our young god as he faces off against his most powerful opponents yet, the masters of time and space.

What is the best way to describe an author who writes humorous fantasy?

Do we tell about bookshelves full of fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal books, his love of mythology, or the years he spent as dungeon master? Or is it more important to know his favorite player-character was a chaotic-good elf? What about that stack of old comic books he never seems to get rid of?

But there's a serious side too. The other half of his bookshelf is filled with books on management, marketing, computer programming, and financial analysis? What about his years as a hospital president, or the many businesses he created, his years as a stock trader? What about his early years counseling drug addicts?

Is there a pattern to his travels around the world? Why chose places like King Arthur’s Camelot, the Temple of Delphi, Buddha’s Tree of Enlightenment, China’s Forbidden City, or the Great Pyramid of Egypt? What is it he's searching for?

And what does any of this have to do with writing a good fantasy book?

Perhaps it’s that mix within Steve that makes The Universe Builders such a delightful story with such serious undertones.

“But sometimes a child comes along who refuses to accept that wisdom. A child who keeps asking questions and even dares to doubt the answers.”

Bernie is a god. He creates universes. He’s done such a good job at it that he won a Universe award. However, Bernie never seems to quickly fix things in part because he sees them in systems instead of problems. He watches the universes he gets evolve, and in doing so, he approaches them, and their owners....differently. And then, his boss Shemal, thinks Bernie takes too much time; although he has to admit the young god does a good job.

This time around, Bernie’s “problem” is a universe called Flo, for the fluorescent power the Topicans who live there produce through mining and smelting for Micah, the trader-slash-owner. That’s all Micah wants. However, things are changing and Micah doesn’t understand.

The story is told through Bernie’s observations, the evolution of the Topicans, and the fear of the end of Flo as seen by some of them who try to save it before Shemal “blinks” it out of existence. Author Steve LeBel also quietly makes observations of just how integrated our systems are to how things do or don’t change. The book is not only a treatise on ecology and Gaia theory, but also, in quiet ways sociology, science, industrial revolution science and research (and their own problems), psychology, theology, history, poverty, evolution, works-righteousness and life itself.

I found myself cheering, laughing and crying, sometimes all at once with this wonderful addition to The Universe Builders series. I still maintain these book are a great introduction to many important issues teens deal with even more now than when the series began. Again I commend the author for his bravery and fantastic stories that not only challenge but support people who try to change things, and in turn, change themselves. This is, so far, THE best book of 2019. Highly recommended.5+/5

I had the honor of receiving an advanced reader copy of this book.

This is the fourth Bernie book in The Universe Builders series. I do recommend reading the books in order, although it is not absolutely necessary.

Bernie and his unique talents as a universe fixer are needed again. This time to fix Flo, a universe that produces the phosphorescent dust that lights the gods’ streets at night. The life forms on Flo have abandoned the mining operation to produce this dust and declared the trade goods ‘not worth it’. What happened? How does Bernie get trading going again? And what is causing his ‘memory’ issues?

On Flo, a task-force has been created, headed by the capable scientist Loranta; the virus must be stopped or they are doomed. But where did it come from and how do they get rid of it? Nothing seems to be working until a young inventor, Gorod, tells the task-force about something he invented. But is this invention causing more harm than good? Can they do anything else to stop the progression of the virus?

As we go back-and-forth between the two stories, you see more and more the intersection of the two problems and find out Bernie’s job might be more complicated and involved that it first seemed. How can he both help the life forms on Flo and get the trading going for the client again? Doing both before his boss decides it would be easier to just start over.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, sped through it in fact. Flo’s story was interesting, different in its’ more scientific problem from previous stories. I liked the almost backward telling of the story; Bernie comes into the constantly changing middle of Flo’s story and then we find out how it got to this point. I also loved some of the other little tidbits we are told about Bernie with hints towards his future. For example, he goes on another dangerous adventure, this time to the Blue Mountain per Claudius’ request, where he makes a startling discovery with the help of his best friends Lenny and Suzie. We also find out more about the gods’ world, including their expiring money, whimsical streets, and beliefs on death. I found the ending to be a good full-circle ending for the universe of Flo. I was left with more questions than answers when it came to Bernie. But I think that means there are great things in store for him and I am eager to find out what they are.

Highly recommend this book!!

One would believe that author Steve LeBel had time travelled himself after reading all the adventures Bernie and his best friends Suzie and Lenny had experienced in this last installment! Several new characters were introduced with all having the same desire to save either the business or the entire planet of Flo, created purposely for the production of the glowing dust mined there. This was needed on Bernies world to light the streets at night. Without the production, the planet might be blinked out of current status, and any life already existing would be gone.
In order for Bernie to take on this assignment, he had to fix whatever was closing the mine and try to do this quickly before that could happen.
Now others on the planet had another agenda. A young scientist from the future had created a time machine that took him into the past to solve a very serious virus that would kill the entire planet with time. There was a whole group of workers contained in a safety bubble so that the time changes wouldn't paradox their lives for their futures, but only if contained, and it still did. Gorod, our inventor, was the only one allowed to travel, with the team doing the research for results of the interventions. The virus was not to be eradicated, no matter what ideas and inventions were presented.
These different spikes of progress were stopping the mine production, and Bernie and friends had to figure out what was going on. Every time Bernie would go to Flo, everything was different, and the people had new lives and directions.
Many heartfelt attempts were made by both sides until Bernie followed Gorod into the future to finally get the whole story.
After that, with both sides teaming up, and Bernies ability as a God to change the final outcome of the virus, Flo was healed, or better, back to original balance. The mine production was better than ever, the streets glowed, and serious time bubble effects were no longer even a memory.
One theme throughout the book leaves you with a mystery however. The ancient God Claudius is always in the background with his counsel of other ancient Gods, and watching and sometimes guiding Bernie along the way. All we can do is stay tuned for the next installment and anxiously wonder.
The characters have wonderfully different personalities and Steve wraps up each of their futures beautifully. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the whole series, and be taken into Bernies world with pleasure.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free advanced review copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I have read the other books in this series, and I’ve been patiently waiting for this book to be ready.

I love the world that Steve LeBel has created in which gods create universes. They live on a plateau and they don’t have a lot of resources so they make the universes to trade for the things they need. For example, the planet Flo has been mining fluorescent dust that keeps the gods’ streets glowing at night. They have a trade agreement with the owner of the planet but suddenly they stop mining the dust. Flo is brought in for Bernie to find out why they’re no longer mining and to fix it. If he doesn’t get it fixed soon, everything on the planet will be wiped out and they’ll start all over again. Bernie doesn’t want this to happen, especially once he’s met some of the people.

The characters are well developed and have mostly human characteristics. Bernie, the main character, is a young god, famous because of winning an award for a universe he created. His best friends are Suzie and Lenny and they try to help him figure out ways to save Flo. They also accompany Bernie to the Blue Mountain which is a long ways away from the plateau they live on and the journey could be very dangerous.

I like Steve LeBel’s writing style. He brings the characters and the planets alive. This book does stand on its own but I recommend reading the series. It’s well worth your time. The only complaint I have is that I have to wait for the next book.

I received and advance (Beta) copy of this book, what follows is an honest review.
Bernie is a god on a planet full of gods. The gods do not work, they let the people on planets they create make the products they need to sell. Now, there are some who work, they are the people who create these worlds, not all gods can. All his life Bernie wanted to be a universe builder and just by mistakes of his rival in earlier books, he lucks into the job. Bernie has something that the other builders do not have. When a universe stops working, the gods blink the population of the universe out of existence and start again, not a cheep undertaking. Bernie is in the repair area and is always under pressure from his boss to 'blink them' fix what cause it and move on. His conscious will not let him kill the people of the worlds.
In previous stories, Bernie has done well with saving the universes, but this new one is a problem. Every time he works on fixing the problem, when he comes back, things have changed drastically as if someone else was messing with this world. Who could it be, and why? No one else has access to it. While back on his home world Bernie along with Suzie and Lenny run into another mystery to be solved.

If you enjoy a good sci-fi time travel book then this is one to look into. It is designated as YA for young adult, but this 66 year old enjoyed it. It is clean fun. Nothing for you to keep the kids from reading and I am sure most would identify with lovable Bernie.

Privileged to be a beta reader I just finished Bernie and the Time Lords at 2:30 this morning! Steve LaBel has done an excellent job extending this great series. To catch up...

Bernie is an immortal god who lives in a town far far away. He attended school just like you and I did/do. He got a job at the "Business". He has a best friend Lenny and a girlfriend Suzie!

Bernie even won a very prestigious award for the most god like species created...AND his boss is very gruff in a by the book sort of way!

Bernie's most recent assignment is to diagnose and repair Flo-a universe created to manufacture the substance that lights the roads in the town!

But the more deeper Bernie investigates the odder it seems...someone is messing with Time-impossible! There is a time barrier and Bernie and his other gods can't do that-but it's happening!

Gorod, native of Flo, built a time machine and he's using said machine to make their industrial revolution start early... why? To cure a virus that's killing all plant life that will eventually make the planet Flo uninhabitable!

Go Bernie! Bernie gets help along the way from Suzie, she's great at seeing all sides of the equation and at pep talks!

And Lenny, he has a marvelous collection of off world technology(OWT), they even take a trip to the Blue Mountain in a forbidden hovercraft!

Keep up the good work Mr Steve LaBel...cant wait to see what's next for our young hero!

Just finished beta reading this book, my second for Steve, I also beta read Bernie and the Wizards.
And oh my gods it is just as awesome as the others. If not more so, I have a sneaking feeling that this one just hurdled the others in my Universe Builders chart.

We catch up with Bernie and the gang just after his escapades in Wizards. He is still being feted by the Townsfolk in light of his award and is still being asked to talk to his fan club. which he doesn't want to do.

A new assignment on a small world that produces the dust that illuminates The Town keeps him busy during this book. But not too busy that Bernie Lenny and Suzie can't go off on a new adventure beyond the Edge. Leading them into danger, triumph and potentially the loss of one of the gang.

There will be gasps of excitement, tears of both joy and heartache, and lots of laughs with this book. Bernie is challenged to look into himself and both to be more, and less, trusting in this book, and him finding his feet with regards to when to open up and when to trust his gut lead him to become a much stronger and better god.

We see more about love, the gods, and the possibility of an afterlife in this book. Really well written, would totally recommend this book.

As always Steve Lebel has hit another one out of the ballpark and Bernie is off on another adventure. This time it's to find out the problem on the .planet Flo. Talk about an experience that you won't forget.
Strange things are happening and things aren't making sense on Flo. Bernie is off to find out why.
Bernie, his best friend Lenny and his girlfriend Suzie decide that they will figure out what the problem is and fix it.
With the knowledge that Bernie and his friends have they decide to use Lenny's hovercraft to travel to the Blue Mountain. What happens, I'm not telling but once you read it, you'll want to read it again like I did. I love Bernie and his adventures.
This would make a great gift to give or to make as an addition to anyone's bookshelf. I have read about Bernie and his adventures since book 1 I feel like family. I wish I could give more than 5 stars because it deserves more. Steve I'm waiting for Bernie's next adventure to read about. Keep them coming. A great book and great read.

Bernie's at it again. Lots of problems and so little time to fix it. But Bernie's up to the task and along with his friends Suzie and Lenny, they've got it covered.
There's quite a lot of information on the greenhouse effect due to the issues the planet Flo is experiencing but Bernie is determined to get everything back in order for the owner of the universe. The only problem is that the citizens of the planet's future keep interfering with the past and Bernie must find them in order to get everything back on track.
Can he do it? Read the book to find out. Bernie and the Time Lords is the fourth in the series on The Universe Builders and it will definitely keep you up late turning the pages to find out how Bernie's plans come together, or not.....

Bernie and the Time Lords is another great adventure in Universe problems and fixes with Bernie and his friends working through some serious life threatening situations, requiring skill and knowledge of the way of the worlds. Steve provides lucrative scientific solutions for the characters to puzzle through until success is achieved, but with hurdles to overcome each time. That is what makes the story fun, with the answers not always forthcoming without consequences! It is the trial and errors and surprises that keeps us readers on our toes. And along the way, you learn science, religion and affairs of the heart with respect for each.
Kudos to Steve LeBel for another chapter in Bernie and his friends! Looking forward to the continuing sagas of the young Gods.

ARC

Enjoyable stand alone (book in a series) quick read - don’t let the page count fool you!

A magnificent new universe for Bernie to figure out what’s wrong. Intriguing native characters who are resilient and inventive.

Science has never been so fascinating and this touch of science fiction makes it ultra sweet.

If you read Wizards, you’ve met Sissy and she is still charming and opinionated here. We explore more about the gods and the mystery arc surrounding them grows.

Hopefully it will be polished before publication, but even as it stands it’s wonderful MG book.

Steve LeBel’s books are gold. What can I say? It’s great! Bernie and his friends are complex characters that get in interesting adventures perfectly described so that you can clearly picture every scene. The strange worlds that Bernie enters are made all the more wonderful by his kind and compassionate guiding hands. The only thing missing is- more more more! Lol. I’ll impatiently await the next installment. :)

Bernie and the time lords

What a book. I have read all the Bernie books and I feel this is the best of the lot. Poor Bernie. He tries so hard and goes through so much that I actually feel sorry for him but he always comes out all right. This book is a delight to read and I highly recommend it.

Hooked me from beginning to end.

Steve LeBel is an expert at grabbing my attention and keeping it. Some of the plot points I could see coming a mile away, but none of the most important ones. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes time travel stories or wants a good series with a unique premise.

Once again Steve LeBel doesn't disappoint. This 4th book in the Universe Builders is entertaining, witty and still manages to deal with some rather heavy issues without bogging one down. A must read.

Really love Bernie and his group! They are engaged in trying to solve the problems in one universe that has a messed-up time system! These characters are so well done that we know them, like them, and want to keep reading about them! I was given this book and this is my freely given opinion.

Fabulous book. This author has a mind that transcends the strange! His ability to put together a marvelous story of an unusual futuristic but believable group of young geniuses who control the world. And other worlds. I’ve read all of Steve’s books. The word that comes to me is genius. You will long enjoy these books, thinking about them often.

I was lucky enough to be one of the beta readers for Bernie and the Time Lords. I have really enjoyed reading the other books in the Universe Builders series so I was excited for this opportunity.

I have to say this book gave me all of the feels. I cried happy tears and tears of sorrow. I giggled and laughed. There was also a great bit when the young gods were discussing the the afterlife. Really meaningful without being too much.

Steve LeBel does a wonderful job of making you feel like you are right there with the characters. He also writes the books in the series to be stand alone although I do think that you should read the first three books. You won't be disappointed.

Great job Mr. LeBel! I can't wait to read the next book. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long.
