For as long as I live, my wife, Janet and I will never forget that day. A pivotal moment in our career as compounding pharmacists that forever changed everything.
Back in 2001, a morbidly obese patient came into our pharmacy. She was on around 20 different medications, ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes to high cholesterol. And they were costing her… Nothing.
We were creating no value in her life. She didn’t care who we were. She didn’t care about the medications. She didn’t care about how they worked, or anything related because it was costing her nothing…
… WE were a part of the problem (regardless of economic policy or what’s learned in pharmacy school). Janet and I decided to change our commitment, and thus, our system.

You’re not alone if you’re wondering if making changes in our current healthcare system is really a pipe dream or is doable for the average American today. This is the most exciting time in our country's history to be a problem solving, solution focused, health care entrepreneur today and in the coming 20+ years.
There IS a better way & hope for Healthcare in American... to ThinkOutsideTheSystem because OptimalHealthMatters.
Absolutely true regarding our healthcare. I support every aspect of cutting out the 3rd party. Now I feel to about my opinions. He mirrored all my thoughts. Shawn hits on every point if you are trying to get something necessary fixed and you are at optimum health in every other aspect. It ridiculous how often we are charged for unnecessary procedures at a hospital and doled out medications not really needed. I, myself, have chosen to go an alternative route for my knee injury. Three years of procedures I do not want and I am fed up. I recommend reading Sickened because what you say about wanting socialized medical is going to open your eyes to why it should never happen.
This was an inspiring read. As a pharmacy employee I see the injustice of government and employer based health insurance. For example if we are contracted with Medicare we must accept and bill for prescriptions that are covered under the plan. However, the catch is that some drugs will be reimbursed below our cost. At the end of the day we get a long list of drugs that were reimbursed under cost. One day we lost over $2000. So what end up happening is the pharmacy owner starts to tell us he will not stock the product anymore and to send the patient to another pharmacy instead. If it’s cash pay he would order the product.
Worthless rant about insurance companies affecting healthcare
Claims exercise, weight control and rest as the treatment of most diseases which says nothing of the multitude disease that have nothing to do with his way to cure diseases. He also offers no solutions to solve the complexities of insurance companies. He says he accept cash in his compounding pharmacies but that is because insurance doesn’t pay for his hormone therapies. It just a nonstop rant that goes nowhere in solving healthcare problems.
Do not agree with this at all. Might have some good points but what about comparing the American health system to the European countries’ system like Germany and France, and how that is working just fine WITHOUT these high prices, and not to CUBA, an already impoverished country?!? Like really? No. Just no. He is using whatever examples fits his narrative.
Great book!! Provided lots of history on our current health care system and how we can fix some of the shortcomings to make it better for everyone! Lots of practical information for regular healthcare consumers.
